Maybe by the time we fully commit to meson, this will be ready for
public release: https://github.com/asciidoc/asciidoc-py3

In fact, currently, Fedora uses it -- though via some sort of
nonexistent tag or something. :/

Both those things are also true about the configure and Makefile.in files...
