[arch-dev-public] Get Arch Link
So in amazing zealot form, I've been telling my co-workers to download arch and install it! There has been one unfortunate reaction, with several of the people I told to download it. They never can find the "Get Arch" link in the upper right hand corner. It sounds stupid, but every one of them said they scanned for the "download link", didn't see it, and in one case just downloaded ubuntu. A lot of them also didn't seem to even look at the top row of links, they only looked down the right hand column of links. I think a lot of them were just looking for the word download. Maybe in the top "Welcome to Arch Linux!" blurb, we could put a link with the word _download_ in it? Or anywhere on the page? Just as long as the word download is there. It's ubiquitous across almost all sites with stuff to download.. except Arch. // jeff -- . : [ + carpe diem totus tuus + ] : .

Agreed. I've run into this personally once ("Ok, where is that damned lin...oh there it is!"). Thayer? Any usability opinions here?

Maybe we should change it to "Get Ubuntu Now!". :P I am with Jeff here. We should add a "download" item. Also, i think we should update our Install Guide. -- Hugo

Dusty and I talked some months ago about overhauling the navigation of archweb and making everything a drop-menu from the top. I sent you some quick mockups back then to illicit feedback, but they probably got buried under more pressing issues. I think the web navigation needs completely revamped--most folks don't even know the sidebar links are there, and others miss the top navigation (though I don't know how). If we incorporate into a single place, either the sidebar (ala Debian) or top menus (ala Web 2.0) I think it will bring focus to the page as a whole.
I think there should be a download link in the "About" text, a download link on the right hand side, and leave the "Get Arch" link on the menu. If anybody misses it in all three places they probably wouldn't pass Simo's "Are you human" test on the forum anyway. Can somebody file a bug report, I know its a small change but I'm thoroughly swamped until Saturday at the earliest. I'll forget about this if there's not a report. I still think there needs to be one in the giant "what's arch" blurb on the main page. If you're reading that text, you're probably new and looking for a download.
