Thanks Roman. Here's more output from Xorg.0.log [1] and .xsession-errors [2]: For the xorg.log I included only the strange messages occurring very often. For the xsession errors I pasted the last 300 lines. Strange seems to be in xorg.log: [ 55102.137] (II) RADEON(0): radeon_dri2_schedule_flip:670 fevent[0x94aec70] [ 55102.147] (II) RADEON(0): radeon_dri2_flip_event_handler:1067 fevent[0x94aec70] width 1400 pitch 5632 (/4 1408) ..and in .xsession-errors: (gnome-shell:1182): St-CRITICAL **: _st_paint_shadow_with_opacity: assertion `shadow_spec != NULL' failed Maybe you can read out more... Here's the dmesg output [1]. Can't find any error messages related to my problem.
What do you recommend as a next step?

I logged vmstat 2 output [1]. Here are the last 300 lines that show the situation before and after the crash till I rebooted. I can't really read much out of it, but maybe someone else?
For some reason this time it took a while for the problem to show up again (several days). I wonder if that has anything to do with me setting up a swap that I didn't use before. My main memory is more than sufficient though.
@Tuxce: Killing the gnome-shell process restarts the gnome shell but will result in an immediate freeze again. The only solution is restarting the system.
Thanks, Max
Maybe you have some error log in dmesg output ?
Paul
Hello Max, i don't see anything strange in your vmstat output, such as your dmesg. Could you please check .xsession-errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.log, maybe there we'll see something.
