The problem appeared to be a simple typo in the config file, however

: I'm giving up on this for now. I set up wicd to verify that my driver was not to blame and it worked on the first try, so I'm not going to fight with it anymore. I would still like to no have to log into X to get wireless running, but for now I can make do. Thanks.

I had to add:
QUIRKS=(prescan preessid)
to get my connection working.
