[arch-general] shutdown problems
hi all, since a few days, i experience some problems on shutdown. i'm running kde and systemd on a fully upgraded system. when shutting down via kde controls (ctrl-alt-del oder button), i am logged off and presented the login screen, but no shutdown occurs. i tried to change the shutdown command from '/sbin/shutdown -h -p now' to '/sbin/shutdown -h now' but that made just no difference. if i use these commands on bash, it shuts down as expected, not showing the login screen. is this somewhat systemd-related? hints appreciated… georg
I am experiencing this same issue on my 2 KDE systems too. Both using systemd too.

Likewise, but since shutdown works from KDM, this has not bothered me enough to debug it quite yet. Regards, Bjørn Øivind

Maybe there is something wrong with ConsoleKit, KDM will take care of it automatically. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ConsoleKit

Without a display manager, some time in the last few months you now seem to have to add permissions for shutdown and suspend to console kit. Variations of .xinitrc no longer seem to have an effect. Linux hardly has a clear and concise permission model these days increasing the likelihood of an admin missing something. Sudo or even RBAC are easier to be sure of and so far atleast I don't see the argument/usefulness as there are groups/secondary groups and DAC and sudo can be very powerful and fine grained when used right and for Local/remote there is firewall options, ssh options, tcpwrappers etc.. -- Kc

You aren't confusing two different issues? When I upgraded Xfce I lost the options to restart and to shut down for the panel item. I still could log out by the panel item and than shut down from GDM or what ever I'm using at the moment. However, I only had to edit the panel item's preferences and got back the options to restart and shut down. It was always possible to shut down by command line. I'm not booted to my Arch, IIRC I didn't switch to systemd. It's possible to be stricken by fleas and cooties at the same time, however, there are less and more serious "shutdown problems" at the moment. - Ralf

Sorry, I should have read the other replies first, instead of replying myself. - Ralf

Aaaargh, sorry, seldom, but sometimes Evolution doesn't sort mails by date as wanted or also seldom, I sort mails by thread and forget to switch back to date, anyway, my mistake.
