After installing xfce4, include /opt/xfce4/bin in $PATH and put 'exec startxfce4' into .xinitrc, xfce4 works fine. But there are no icons in the panel. When I'm right the file is beeing created while installit the gtk2 package.
So try to pacman -Sy gtk2 again and watch the output. On my system the file has a timestamp from my last update gtk2 2.8.11 -> 2.8.12.
Happily you are right. Although pacman says, that the version of gtk2, gtk2-2.8.12-1, is up to date, the problem disappeared after reinstalling :-) Michael Krauss
