This sounds good to me. I always wondered why we ship this script, too.
Can anyone see any benefit to it, or should it be removed? I vote remove it (vanilla packages, ahem). Either way, let's go with option one. Using the grub shell seems like too much work, especially considering grub ships a script that simplifies it anyway.
I didn't even know it existed. Every time I move an installation (which happened a lot recently due to broken and new hard drives) I used the grub shell (I think most of the time I used the grub shell from a Live CD, without even booting Linux) which always worked well. Bottom line - drop install-grub, stick with grub shell and/or what grub devs deliver.
