[arch-releng] RC2 ISOs and final release
The new RC2 ISOs are up. http://dev.archlinux.org/~aaron/archiso/ Roadmap: http://bugs.archlinux.org/roadmap/proj6 Bugs fixed in RC1 and RC2: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12896 http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12949 http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/13068 http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/13070 http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/13140 http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/13101 http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/13102 http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/13057 http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/13038 (I think that's it) Please test the above bugs, and anything else on the bug tracker. Great news Aaron, I'm gonna test tonight.. PS: i made a little "roadmap" to know at which point of the procedure you can verify which item. * after boot: FS#13038 - Tiny typo in ISO boot message : Should be "Arch Linux Live ISO (vc/n)". FS#13140 - Official Installation documentation for 64bit users:FS#13068 - grub-gfx-0.97-7 outdated in x86_64 pacman -Qi grub-gfx. check that it's 0.97-11 or higher * during installation FS#12949 - `hdparm -I' fails in VMware : check that the disk capacities look okay (afaik you can see this best in the autoprepare one). especially vmware users * after install / on first boot FS#12896 - USB install - won't boot into install system : USB users, check that it works FS#13102 - fix, need to copy initial /etc/localtime : check that this file exists on the target system and you don't get fscks because "last mount time was in the future" and stuff like that FS#13070 / 13057 - grub-gfx installed instead of default grub : check that you have the non-fancy grub FS#13101 - simple fix to setup script writing timezone to rc.conf : check that your choosen timezone is in rc.conf (you can probably check this already during installation too) Dieter
gave i686 core a spin in Virtualbox 32 bit. ext4 autoprepare no problems encountered. my keyboard layout was not put automatically in rc.conf but I think this has always been the case. all bugs that i could test seem fixed. see below Dieter
* after boot: FS#13038 - Tiny typo in ISO boot message : Should be "Arch Linux Live ISO (vc/n)".
OK
FS#13140 - Official Installation documentation
looks good
for 64bit users:FS#13068 - grub-gfx-0.97-7 outdated in x86_64 pacman -Qi grub-gfx. check that it's 0.97-11 or higher
* during installation FS#12949 - `hdparm -I' fails in VMware : check that the disk capacities look okay (afaik you can see this best in the autoprepare one). especially vmware users
looks good
* after install / on first boot FS#12896 - USB install - won't boot into install system : USB users, check that it works
FS#13102 - fix, need to copy initial /etc/localtime : check that this file exists on the target system and you don't get fscks because "last mount time was in the future" and stuff like that
forgot to check the copied file.. but the system booted and no fsck needed. my time is correct on first boot too.
FS#13070 / 13057 - grub-gfx installed instead of default grub : check that you have the non-fancy grub
hooray good old ugly grub. (but i use 32bit)
FS#13101 - simple fix to setup script writing timezone to rc.conf : check that your choosen timezone is in rc.conf (you can probably check this already during installation too) OK

Is there anything within the ISO which refers to the RC2 name or do we just need to rename the files if no more showstoppers are found? I would be nice to have xdelta patches the next time to reduce the traffic. Nope - that was intentional. If this goes final, if should be a simple "rename RC2 1 *.iso"
I would be nice to have xdelta patches the next time to reduce the traffic. (Downloading from gerolde is quite slow; not to mention the years it takes to upload those isos :-)).
You mean an xdelta patch from 2009.02 to 2009.XX ? Something about that doesn't sit right with me, but I guess I could do it

The difference between major releases might be too big, but it should really speed up testing if only a few chagnes are made. And of course the overhead of up/downloading the img and iso images can be reduced. I just made a diff between archlinux-2009.02-RC2-core-i686.iso and archlinux-2009.02-RC2-core-i686.img. The resulting patch is only 1,2MB. (And yes, using the iso and that patch produces a img with the same md5sum) -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

Wow this is getting complicated... so are you saying that we should provide xdelta patches from ISO to USB image? What about from ftp ISO to core ISO? That seems like a lot more work for smaller benefit. In the future, we're going to have a machine setup for building these and will host the ISOs directly from there, so this transfer back and forth will be nonexistent. Would the xdeltas still be useful at that point?

Not really. My intention was just doing it for the testing releases to speed thing up. This should prevent things like "I have change a line in the installer, please download 2GB again and test :-)"

Installed the RC2 in a virtualbox machine, no showstoppers and all the bugs (relating to the i686 iso) seem to have been fixed. Thanks for the reply about hwdetect. On Wed, Feb 11, 2009 at 8:50 PM, Pierre Schmitz <pierre@archlinux.de> wrote:

Yes, that happens when you configure your network using the installer; I don't see anything wrong there, unless you mean that it should be in the "Configure System" section instead in the end of "Install Packages". P.S.: There is a mistake in the patch for 13237, attached is the one that works. 2nd P.S.: Forget about the last note I made before ("In the checksums file core and ftp images (i686 and x86_64) are duplicated and with different sums. Shall I test the last ones? What have changed?"). They're not duplicated, the others are the img ones. -- Alexander

Your patch looks good to me. I don't want to delay the release for another week just for this though. see ticket.
Notes:
- If the release is going to be numbered 2009.02 the isolinux images have to be rebuilded for consistency, 2009.01 appears in the boot screen.
Nice, a token that will always remind us of the great time we had building this thing and eventually doing the (bit delayed) release. Let's keep this :)
- Now in rc.conf if you use local time it appears HARDWARECLOCK="local" instead of HARDWARECLOCK="localtime". Just if you didn't realized, in case "localtime" is needed for something. I know rc.sysinit uses it, but it's always in an "else" branch, so no problems there. Can you report this bug please?
PS: to all testers, if you can confirm that things are fixed, please say so in the appropriate ticket. (and for the 64bit/usb things please mention you have tested it on the appriopriate platform) Dieter

Can't be helped, and it's not a requisite for the install ISO.

a) hwdetect is... not very good, old, and deprecated. b) you DO NOT need to fill in the modules array. udev does everything. In fact on three of my machines the only things I have listed in the modules array are a blacklisted pcspkr, kvm modules, cpufreq modules, and other things that aren't detected with EITHER udev or hwdetect. Short answer: because it's simply not needed and is inelegant

If I see this right, all showstoppers are fixed now. Of course there are lot of small things that still can be improved. But I think we should just release it. I hereby suggest to move it to the ftp dir tonight. I can build the torrents then. We can announce it on Monday. So we have the weekend to prepare the news and the mirrors have a chance to sync. This sounds good to me, but I won't be around until Sunday - I will move it out before I leave work today, unless there are any "omg stop!" comments. I will then prepare the news items and all that fun stuff - anyone interested in making a draft of release notes? Make sure to mention things like AIF :)

I wrote some draft for 2009.01. Could be used as a skeleton: ---------------------- Friday, 01/23/09 We proudly announce the release of the new ArchLinux installation ISO's 2009.01. After a longer period without a new ISO, 2009.01 comes with these features: - Kernel 2.6.28 - Ext4 support. Installation could be done on a ext4 root partition, also the ISO is ready (grub) to act as a rescue/maintains cd for systems with ext4 root partitions. - New ISO's (ftp-iso i686 and x86_64) with isolinux as bootloader. In the past we have a few systems which have problems to boot the install CD's when Grub was the bootloader. For these systems we offer cd's with isolinux bootloader. Also we have a group of people working on the further iso's. Release group TEXT etc. Further plans: - Release new ISO's more regularly based on kernel upstream releases. - Switch to a new installer (aif text, etc.) For testing on 2009.01 is still a version of aif ver.sio.n-1 available. TEXT Happy installing! ------------------- Regards Gerhard

my changes: * ISO's to ISOs and CD's to CDs (I hope Aaron knows his language well.. http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-releng/2009-January/000004.html ) * ArchLinux to Arch Linux (right?) * isos-> images (img != not iso) * phrasing changes, added something here and there. * added some more new features * releng notes at the end * added "what's next?" and "Download" sections We proudly announce the release of the new Arch Linux installation images, version 2009.02 It took us quite a while, but we think the result is worth it: we added some cool new things and ironed out some long-lasting imperfections 2009.02 comes with the following features: - Kernel 2.6.28 - Ext4 support. Installation can be done on a ext4 root partition, also the ISO is ready (grub) to act as a rescue/maintainance cd for systems with ext4 root partitions. - New ISOs (ftp-iso i686 and x86_64) with isolinux as bootloader. Some users have reported issues with booting when using the Grub bootloader. For these systems we offer cd's with the isolinux bootloader. - Several bugfixes in the installer - Brought the included documentation up-to-date - Inclusion of the AIF (Arch Linux installation framework): Currently still unsupported and under development. But we want to make this the new installer in the future, so if you like to test bleeding-edge stuff you could give it a try. (it also supports lvm and dm_crypt) If you encounter any problems, you can check for bug reports (or file a new one) under the "Release Engineering" project at http://bugs.archlinux.org For more info about the releng team and how to get in touch with us, see http://www.archlinux.org/news/430/ What's next? Our goal is to bring coordinated releases following the rhythm of kernel releases, in order to provide optimal hardware support. The roadmap (and current open bugs) of the next release (which will be based on 2.6.29) can be found on http://bugs.archlinux.org/index.php?do=index&tasks=&project=6&due=59 Download http://www.archlinux.org/download/ <note: i would put the instructions from http://dev.archlinux.org/~aaron/archiso/instructions on that page, as described in my "website improvements" email> Have fun!

Hmm, it seems Aaron forget to do that. Should I just create the ftp dir and move the files in, so we can start distributing. We need at least two days to get those on the mirrors. If there is a reason to not do it, let me know. Btw: What was the naming convention for the ftp dir and the iso files? Something like 2009.02/archlinux-2009.02-1-core-i686.iso? It's okay. all bugs are closed except one which is waiting for a testrun in vmware ( http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12949?project=6 ), though it is very likely it can also be closed.
Btw: What was the naming convention for the ftp dir and the iso files? Something like 2009.02/archlinux-2009.02-1-core-i686.iso?
Without the '-1', so just 2009.02/archlinux-2009.02-core-i686.iso The '-1' would be if need to to a rerelease with minor changes. (unlikely)

http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12949 can be closed too. When I performed the tests the disk capacity was correctly detected both partitioning the disk manually and using the auto prepare feature. It was tested using all of the modes VMware supports regarding buses and HDs. -- Alexander

Ok, I moved the files to the ftp dir and renamed them. I also added the instrucstions and a md5sum file. I created ONE torrent for all files;I was to lazy to create one torrent per file. When I open this in Ktorrent it asks me which file to download. Please let me know if there are problems with other clients. I also added 10 mirrors as webseeds (again, I was too lazy to add all ~70 mirror by hand). Of course they are not synced yet. But it would be intersting if this works in one or two days later. ATM, I limited seeding to 80KB/s. I would be happy if some would join me seeding. Just download the RC2 ones and rename them; or wait until the webseeds are available. hmm it really shows up as just "iso" in rtorrent, even in the properties it says that this is the name. Though now you mention it, when i check some other torrents, the "name" always seems to be the same as the directory it get's stored in. Ah, I now see what you mean. It seems the problem is the strange bittorrent format. "name" is not only a random name, but part of the path. And as long as we store our isos in an dir named iso we cannot chagne it. That's it, if using web seeds the name have to be "iso" or at least "2009.02", not other things :(. Anyway there are about 17 seeders at the moment :) (excluding web seeds). -- Alexander

Ok, so when should we do the announcement? I think not before tomorrow evening (now + 32h). ATM most of the mirrors haven't the isos yet.
Does now seem like a good time to put up a formal announcement?

Modified one thing - we also need to import the install guide dolby made (see installer git repo) into the wiki - anyone with SysOps permissions want to do that?

Done. Mirrors should sync that one faster :)

here's a simple script that requests '/iso/2009.02' on all mirrors from default /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and counts the file with 2009.02 in there name. My conclusion: we have quite a few mirrors who are not synced.. but will they ever? they had at least 2 days time :/ dieter@dieter-ws ~ for mirror in `tar -xf /var/cache/pacman/pkg/pacman-mirrorlist-20090108-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz -O | awk '/^Server = / {print $3}' | sed 's#/$repo/os/i686#/iso/2009.02/#'`; do echo -n ">> $mirror : "; wget "$mirror" -O - 2>/dev/null | grep -c '2009.02'; done

Yes, go ahead. I think most mirrors are in sync; we should recommoned bittorrent anyway. -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de
I can lend my hand with seeding, at the benefit of 400kbps ;) ________________________________ From: Pierre Schmitz <pierre@archlinux.de> To: arch-releng@archlinux.org Sent: Saturday, 14 February, 2009 7:08:09 PM Subject: Re: [arch-releng] RC2 ISOs and final release Am Samstag 14 Februar 2009 17:13:03 schrieb Pierre Schmitz:
Should I just create the ftp dir and move the files in, so we can start distributing. We need at least two days to get those on the mirrors.
Pierre PS: Please don't announce those isos anywhere else yet. -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

Please test the above bugs, and anything else on the bug tracker.
This should be pretty much the final ISO, so I'm just looking for some confirmations on the above bugs.
Known issues: grub "Release notes" is empty (whoops, blame me!)
Well now, no problems here (core-{i686,x86_64}.iso :). Same setup used since testing beta1, beta2, rc1, and now rc2. Happy Arch Linux, happy KISS! -- Gerardo Exequiel Pozzi ( djgera ) http://www.djgera.com.ar KeyID: 0x1B8C330D Key fingerprint = 0CAA D5D4 CD85 4434 A219 76ED 39AB 221B 1B8C 330D
