Description =========== librsync previously used a truncated MD4 "strong" check sum to match blocks. However, MD4 is not cryptographically strong. It's possible that an attacker who can control the contents of one part of a file could use it to control other regions of the file, if it's transferred using librsync/rdiff. For example this might occur in a database, mailbox, or VM image containing some attacker-controlled data. To mitigate this issue, signatures will by default be computed with a 256-bit BLAKE2 hash. Old versions of librsync will complain about a bad magic number when given these signature files. Impact ====== An attacker is able to take advantage of the weak checksum calculation by using a birthday attack in order to corrupt or modify files that are transfered. Description =========== If corrupted file system didn't trip over some corruption check, and then the file system was modified via tune2fs or debugfs, such that the superblock was marked dirty and then written out via the closefs() path, it's possible that the buffer overrun could be triggered when the file system is closed. This issue can lead to arbitrary code execution if a malicious device is plugged in and the mounting process chooses to run fsck (or other application using the ext2fs library) on the device's malicious filesystem. Impact ====== A local attacker is able to execute arbitrary code with a plugged in malicious device by causing a crafted block group descriptor to be marked as dirty and then accessed by an application using the ext2fs library like fsck. Description =========== The bmexec_trans function in kwset.c allows local users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds heap read and crash) via crafted input when using the -F option. grep's read buffer is often filled to its full size, except when reading the final buffer of a file. In that case, the number of bytes read may be far less than the size of the buffer. However, for certain unusual pattern/text combinations, grep -F would mistakenly examine bytes in that uninitialized region of memory when searching for a match. With carefully chosen inputs, one can cause grep -F to read beyond the end of that buffer altogether. This problem arose via commit v2.18-90-g73893ff with the introduction of a more efficient heuristic using what is now the memchr_kwset function. The use of that function in bmexec_trans could leave TP much larger than EP, and the subsequent call to bm_delta2_search would mistakenly access beyond end of the main input read buffer. Impact ====== A local attacker is able to use specially crafted input when using the -F option to cause a heap buffer out-of-bounds read leading to denial of service.
