If you plan on adopting sage-mathematics, you should know that it is currently unbuildable on archlinux, and some other newer distros due to how it is built. It is currently out of date, and you wont be able to update it without fixing this.
I could build 4.8 succesfully (on x86_64) by commenting out the line "touch spkg/installed/ppl-0.11.2" in the PKGBUILD. I really hope someone can keep maintaining this in [community], it is a pain to build (took more than 3 hours and almost all free disk space here) and the binaries from www.sagemath.org are incompatible with Arch (the Fedora one gives a missing _md5 module, and the Ubuntu one simply segfaults).
The i686 build fails even with that option commented out. I think building on x86_64 still works. There is an online version of sage at http://www.sagenb.org/ Sorry, but I stand by my decision and will not be maintaining sage any longer.
