There used to be greasemonkey scripts that did this. I haven't used gmail in years, so I've no idea if those still work, but http://userscripts-mirror.org/ might be a good place to start searching.

Luckily, I'm fluent in basic Javascript, so a simple one line script containing:
document.getElementById('haot').checked = false;
is all it took.
