Dunno if I'm being superstitious or not, but I always make sure to not 
be running an app when pacman goes to update it.  (e.g., exit X when 
updating X or KDE, shut down a daemon like cups or ssh when updating it, 
dropping to single user mode when updating the kernel, etc.)
