I'm having the same problem as OP.  Re-configuring fails:

% groups
wheel audio users vboxusers pulse-access pulse-rt magnus
% alsamixer
ALSA lib pulse.c:229:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect:
Connection refused

cannot open mixer: Connection refused
% ll /dev/snd
total 0
