Support for ATI Evergreen gpus is coming along well now, you should be able to 
use it just fine. Do you have an xorg.conf set up?

Try running X manually:

Xorg :0 -br -nolisten tcp vt7 -logfile $HOME/Xorg.log -logverbose 99

I'm not sure what the firmware situation is for that gpu, but do you have 
linux-firmware installed?
