Your email client is Evolution 3.4.2 which probably means you use gnome3 with
gvfs and udisks{,2}. For the rest of us /media is still a valid place to
dynamically create mountpoints. For instance, pmount uses only /media.

Well... First, automounting is a serious security hole. Nothing should be
automounted unless explicitly permitted by the user. Second, adding softlinks
is not a good idea IMHO because /media belongs to core/filesystem and your
modifications will most likely to disappear on update. If you really don't
like /run/media -- try bind-mounting it to /media in fstab.
