I actually followed the direction in the Arch wiki for debugging boot
problems, which said to remove the configuration file you're referring
to (sorry, not remembering the name at the moment) and reinstall that
package, along with linux and udev with pacman -Syyu.

So I'm actually working with the default configuration that comes with
the most recent version of that package.

No joy.
