you do the right thing with providing always the latest kernel and I'm
aware about linux-rt issues, that's why I keep kernel packages for a
while separated from the pacman and yaourt cache.

That I can log in and email using 3.8.13-rt14-1-rt doesn't mean, that I
can run an old audio session I might have done with 3.8.11-rt8-1-rt, so
I at least keep kernel packages for kernels I used for audio production
for a while.
