I've been using Claws-mail for some time, and I am quite happy of the
way it handles threads. I switched to mutt a few weeks ago, and I
found it to have a very nice way of handling ML (along with threading,
of course).
If you like keyboard shortcuts, well, Mutt is the best choice for you
anyway ;)

BTW, I've never used the gmail interface, so I can't really compare...
