[PRQ#68152] Orphan Request for quickemu
FabioLolix [1] filed an orphan request for quickemu [2]: Need to change the depends to qemu-desktop; reported on 2024-02-03 and 2024-04-18 VMs fails to run, existence of a fix made on 2024-11-14; a simple patch to apply Updated and improved pkgbuild made available on 2024-12-04 https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/quickemu#comment-1001106 https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/quickemu#comment-968138 [1] https://aur.archlinux.org/account/FabioLolix/ [2] https://aur.archlinux.org/pkgbase/quickemu/
The package is maintained and should not be orphaned: 1. Changing the dependency to qemu-desktop is not correct as not everybody wants that. It’s been done by mistake before and caused a lot of annoyance for users of this package. Everybody can install it if they need it and satisfy the qemu requirement. 2. Patching the source code from the package is not correct. The package installs the newest version (4.9.6) WITH any bugs in the upstream version. I am aware that it’s fixed upstream but not yet released. They’ve been contacted about this but for whatever reason they are choosing not to release an update yet. I’ve responded to both of these requests so many times now, but everything is updated and is awaiting an upstream release. On Mon, 30 Dec 2024 at 00:25, <notify@aur.archlinux.org> wrote:

The patch in question addresses an issue specific to Arch Linux: https://github.com/quickemu-project/quickemu/commit/d0ae72a2510f52ae4a9181d7... So packages for Arch would be expected to apply it. Upstream would also not be expected to be in a rush to deploy a new release to cater to a single distro. Patching packages is a standard maintenance activity. When maintainers refuse to keep packages functional, those packages should be considered unmaintained. On Mon, Dec 30, 2024 at 12:03 PM <steffengrundsoe@gmail.com> wrote:

Myself and a lot of others have been working with upstream on this (and other issues) as per the packaging guidelines. It's not my understanding that we should start to backport patches from the next version into the current package and release it under the old version number (4.9.6). This is only going to make it more confusing for the users and upstream. Also upstream has so far fully supported Arch and been quick to patch and release so there's no need to be impatient here. They also just released the new version today (4.9.7) which comes with the patch in question. So again the package is maintained, things just takes longer when we have to work with upstream.
