Most of you are probably aware of the [Arch Schwag Shop][1] for custom merchandise hosted by Zazzle. Many of you also know of my attempts to supplement this with other custom merchandise including case badges, USB keys, and jewellery. Now I would like to officially announce a new [storefront][2] for these Arch products making it easier for you to purchase these items and for Simo and I to process the orders. [arch-announce] JRE and JDK Moved to Community

As some of you may have noticed, the sun Java Runtime Environment and the Java Development Kit, have spent too much time waiting in the extra repository waiting for some love. However, no developer was willing to maintain these packages. Since we already have the OPENJDK6 package, (an open source implementation of the JRE and JDK), we have decided to move the JRE and JDK packages to community, where Geoffroy Carrier will be taking good care of them. He has already updated the packages and fixed their pending bugs. Thanks Geoffroy for your good deed. No package in the official Arch Linux repositories depend on these packages, as they have already been recompiled against OPENJDK6. However, I want to thank the community for their understanding and sorry for any inconveniences. **Why move them, other than the reason given above?** Well, we wanted to favor the open source implementation against the closed source implementation. **No, really, Why did you moved them?** Because Aaron Griffin said so. :-D _(just jocking)_ URL: http://archlinux.org/news/418/

[arch-announce] Unplanned downtime

Sorry about the unplanned downtime- we had an issue with the server this weekend and we couldn't address it until about an hour ago. Everything should be back up again and mirrors should resume syncing tonight. If you notice anything funny or worth noting now that the server is back up, please send an email to the arch-general mailing list. Developers may not see issues if you only post them on the forums. [arch-announce] squirrelmail: return to stable branch

Back in the paleozoic era, during the migration from PHP 4 to PHP 5, we switched to Squirrelmail's development branch out of necessity. Now many years later, this is no longer a problem. In keeping with Arch general best practices, we are switching to the stable 1.4.x series in [extra]. If you have input for us to consider in finalizing this decision, please let me know. [arch-announce] Kernel 2.6.27 in core!

Last night, kernel26 2.6.27-2 has been moved from testing to core. This upgrade seems to be pretty smooth, so don't expect many problems. - Watchdog drivers have been enabled as modules. - MSI/MSI-X is now activated. If your system fails to boot or some PCI devices don't work, add pci=nomsi to your kernel commandline (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56940) - The ipw3945 driver doesn't compile anymore. It's probably easy to patch, but we'll stop maintaining it anyway. Please use iwl3945 or compile the driver yourself (the latest PKGBUILD and patches can be found at http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/ipw3945/trunk/) If any other problems occur, please use the bugtracker or the arch-general mailing list as usual. [arch-announce] New nvidia-173xx packages available for users of GeForce FX cards

The recently released 177.80 version of the NVIDIA driver stopped supporting the GeForce FX series of cards. [arch-announce] klibc upgrade requires user intervention

Due to a limitation in pacman's conflict checking and symbolic link resolution, the upgrade to klibc-1.5.14-1 requires manual removal of a symbolic link befole updating. Please run the command "rm /usr/lib/klibc/include/asm" as root to remove the symbolic link that will otherwise cause a few hundred false file conflicts. URL: http://archlinux.org/news/411/

netcfg v2.1 is mostly a bug fix release, however there are some important changes and new features. - Remove driver specific hacks/quirks. [arch-announce] TeXLive now in extra

Based on the official release last week of [TeXLive 2008][1], a collection of texlive packages is now available in extra and replaces the obsolete tetex. Some important points to note: * PLEASE READ THIS: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/TeXLive * The installation now goes to /usr instead of /opt/texlive. Upon upgrading from the 2007 packages, you might encounter some error messages about binaries not found under /opt/texlive/bin: you can safely ignore them. * Instead of upgrading, I suggest you simply remove all your old texlive packages first, and then do a clean install under /usr. * For reasons of space and because life is too short, I decided not to provide the documentation. You can consult it online at http://tug.org/texlive/Contents/live/doc.html or on CTAN. Documentation packages might soon be made available on [community] though.
