Sander, Parking in the college is not a problem. I think they are about $6.00 or $7.00 a day. Dusty, the 191 takes about 40 min from Kipling station to Humber in a normal day. David, I live in Bolton and have NEVER seen a MegaBus but if you are going to pass by Bolton you best bet is to get off the bus and call me (905-951-7406) and we can go together in my car to Humber. Do you have any idea as to what time you will arrive? You can e-mail me off this list to finalize details and arrangements at ralvez(a)ittwo.ca and we can go from there. Hi sander, I am guessing there is ample parking at the college, but I do not know that. Hopefully Ricardo can tell us more. By bus I suggest taking the 191 rocket from kipling station. I am going to be getting to Toronto via MegaBus, which is supposed to drop me off at the Toronto Coach Terminal. I am wondering if anyone has taken MegaBus to Toronto before and knows if they make any other stops that might be a better place to get off, and if not, what the best way to get to Humber College from the Coach Terminal is. Looking on Google maps, I am told the fastest route is to walk to the Georgetown Train Service, take that to the Bolton Bus service, and take that to the college. That has an estimated travel time of 94 minutes, which would mean I would be arriving at the college about 9:15 AM (late for registrations). -- David Campbell

[arch-events] Archcon: planning of activities

Hey guys, As we know by now, Toronto has many things to do. [1] Since Archcon is at the end of my 14-day stay, I would like to know the planning for the "archcon tourist days" (referred to as ATD from now on) on july 24-25 in advance, so I can adapt my planning accordingly. One of the things I'm thinking about especially, is the trip to the Niagara falls. Dusty and I are definitely going to do this, but do we plan this on the ATD or before? If we plan it on the ATD, more people can share the fun experience, but some people may not be interested in it. I'll put it differently: who wants to go to the Niagara falls but can only do it on the ATD ? But there's more. What about a trip to the clairville conservation area (near to conference)? center island? ontario palace? CN tower? things that are probably all must-do's, but probably not to be done twice. Some other things, I wouldn't mind visiting more then once. E.g. The Linux Caffe I know it's probably hard to plan this advance, as opinions will be cast mostly at the conf (the brainstorm is even planned on day 2 in the evening), but it's gonna suck for me if we decide to do things I've already done (some short things are easily opt-out, but not big ones like day trips or amusement parks), or the other way around, if I skip something and we end up not doing it during the ATD. How can we tackle this problem? Or is the idea to do smaller less invasive things during the ATD like wandering around and having a drink? [arch-events] ArchCon : easy transit through GO train ?

Hello everyone, I have some relatives that live right next to a GO train station in Burlington, and was wondering if anyone knew of an easy way to transit from the GO trains to Humber college. By looking at a this map http://davidpritchard.org/maps/tortransit.html I can see that the nearest GO stations are malton, etobicoke north, and york university (which are quite far a walking distance) and i'm having trouble making any correspondance between the official GO maps and the TTC maps. So, i'm wondering if its worth the effort of using the GO trains or just going to a nearby hotel. any thoughts ? -- "All musicians are drug addicts, no question about it. [arch-events] Archcon: places to sleep and to eat?

hi, 1) Who has figured out where to sleep yet? If everything goes according to plan, I'll be hanging around in Toronto for about 10-14 days. According to http://www.archlinux.ca/archcon2010/?page_id=43, a dorm room at the campus is a good bet. The archcon wiki page says you can share rooms, but all the dorms are meant for single occupancy and hence have only 1 bed, according to their webpage. So I was gonna ask if anyone wanted to share a room with me for the duration of the conference (4 days incl. weekend), or possible longer, but seems that's not even possible, unless you take a suite for multiple persons. it's $69 for 2 bedrooms and $79 for 3 bedrooms, per night. personally, i like "bed & breakfast" formulas, in my region this usually means you live in the house of some person and have often quite a good service for a good price, and a breakfast of course. but if i google for "toronto bed and breakfast" i mostly hit fancy establishments with the associated prices ($70 and more) located in the financial district of toronto (not where the conf is) Although I did find one in "silverstone drive" (short walk from the conf) (the name of the owner is Barbara Rundle, haven't found an email address, only a phone no.) and I'm also gonna check what I can get out of http://www.torontobandb.com/ Also, where will we eat? Are there any accomodations at the conf? Are there nice snack bars and such in the area around the conf? (google maps only returns some in the financial distruct) Supposing you don't use a B&B formula, where do you get breakfast? Dieter

Hi, I'm considering to buy a prepay SIM card in Toronto. This should make it cheaper for me to get in touch with you guys (Dusty, Ricardo, Dan, Loui, ..) Unless all of you have voip/skype on your phone ;) (my phone supports it, but I never tried it) And also I would have some data traffic to use google maps and stuff, the ability to irc and email might also have benefits for communication. Any recommendations? Dieter

How is the weather like in Toronto? Any predictions for July? I assume that it will be somewhere between warm (20c) and hot (30c) and a lot of sun? [arch-events] Places to sleep and eat.

There are many places to eat and sleep in the vicinity of Humber College. Some are very close to Humber and others are not so close. For starters Dieter, how many people are with you? Are you on your own or are you coming along with someone else? I know some people that may help us get a better rate on some of the hotels in town but I need to know how may people there would be involved. Aside from the food at Humber there are a few other places near by such as "Mr Greek" which is obviously Greek food (and BTW is great !!) and VERY affordable. It is also a nice environment. About 5 min from Humber there is also "Mandarin" with outstanding all-you can-eat Chinese food. I go to both places frequently with my wife and some of my buddies. Aside from those places, just across from Humber, there is a small mall and there is a restaurant that serves relatively decent food (this is also an oriental food place, all-you-can-eat type of restaurant) . If you want to visit Toronto I can provide you, and those of you that wish to visit, with some more detailed places to eat and visit. Naturally, these places are much further out from where we will be (say 1 hr by bus) but if you are visiting that should not be a problem. Downtown Toronto has a ton of places to visit and enjoy good food at a reasonable price. Let me know. Ricardo
