Dear all, For little over a year now, I have maintained netcfg. In doing so I have encountered three major problems. 1. Despite best efforts, the code and control flow of netcfg remain rather messy. 2. Usage of netcfg has many corner cases. 3. Some wheels are invented by both systemd and netcfg, but it is not easy to have netcfg make use of systemd. In order to deal with these issues I have forked netcfg. In the end, it turned out to be more of a rewrite. The result[1] I have called netctl. The main purpose of netctl is to provide profile-based networking in a systemd environment. Here are some of the changes with respect to netcfg. a. Variables in profiles are CamelCase instead of UPPER_CASE to mimic systemd services. b. All configuration files are gone, configuration is done through the netctl utility, which interfaces systemd's systemctl. c. The only non-trivial usage that is provided is automatic configuration through ifplugd or wpa_actiond, formerly known as net-auto-wire{d,less}, now known as netctl-ifplugd and netctl-auto. Some of the bugs that are fixed: d. Bind to network interfaces during boot, thus preventing the lack of a connection after boot recently encountered by owners of slow hardware. e. Allow more complex nameserver setups by using resolvconf (openresv). Transition should not be hard. At any rate the three new man pages netctl(1), netctl.profile(5), and netctl.special(7) should answer all questions. Here is a basic outline of the changes required: - Rename variables in the profiles in /etc/network.d/ and unquote some of their values (mainly Interface=). - Run `netctl enable <profile>` for every profile in the old NETWORKS array. 'last' doesn't work this way, see netcfg.special(7). - Use `netctl list`/`netctl start <profile>` instead of `netcfg-menu`, wifi-menu remains available. As half of the total code base has been removed and almost every line in the other half has been touched, I expect some easy-to-fix bugs to be introduced. Therefore I need testers. Please test netctl: I. $ git clone git://github.com/joukewitteveen/netctl.git II. $ cd netctl; make pkgbuild III. copy netctl-*.tar.xz and PKGBUILD to an empty directory IV. run makepkg in that directory V. install (using `pacman -U`) the resulting package. During the 0.x series, I am not afraid of breaking compatibility. If all goes well, I would like to replace netcfg with netctl starting with a 1.0 release. I know many people don't like the idea of dropping netcfg or netcfg compatibility, but I think the situation of netctl is far easier to maintain. Running v0.1-1 here with a static config and it seems to be working just fine. One thing I will report is that it starts a bit slower than netcfg: % systemd-analyze blame 3396ms netcfg.service % systemd-analyze blame 4076ms netctl(a)static.service Can you inspect my profile and suggest an optimization? For net-auto-wired and -wireless, a new @-unit has to be instantiated with the interface name. Static profiles are enabled automatically when listed in /etc/conf.d/network NETWORKS= - the old netcfg.service has thus been removed. This breaks the NETWORKS=(last) functionality, and I don't think we can handle it properly right now. NETWORKS=(menu) could never work with systemd anyway. I'd really like to remove netcfg@.service, net-auto-wired.service and net-auto-wireless.service at some point, but that will break existing setups. I don't know if we should go ahead with this. What we should definitely do is change netcfg, wifi-menu and netcfg-menu to use systemctl to start profiles when called manually. This would ensure systemd can track the profiles properly, knows how to shut them down and can track their processes.

Make the hook a bit more generic by including non-usb keyboard drivers. This should mean that any keyboard will now work in the initramfs. In addition to fixing some uncommon setups requiring keyboard modules, this would allow us to no longer build in the atkbd module (and hence i8042) in our stock kernels, which will remove an ugly error message on boot for systems without the i8042 controller. arch-projects has been fairly quietly recently, so here's a patch dump for interested parties to amuse themselves with. This is what I'm looking at merging for the next release. Most of it is fairly innocuous and there's the usual occurences of cleanup and bugfixing, but there's a few things worth explicitly calling out: * I'm merging all of the block device build hooks into a single "block" hook. So previously, if your array had "pata sata scsi" in it, you now can replace all that with "block". Since this will also include things like "usb" and "virtio", there's some nice surprises for people who previously had to add these things explicitly. * Addition of a modconf hook, which will be added by default. Rather than have people explicitly add their modprobe.conf (which is no longer the "right thing" as per upstream, this hook will just add the entirety of /{etc,lib}/modprobe.d to the image. I think this is generally the right thing to do as it would be rare that you want an option in early userspace and not later, and vice versa. * Dropping support for /etc/rc.conf. This means that the keymap and consolefont hooks will no longer read from /etc/rc.conf, but only from /etc/vconsole.conf and /etc/locale.conf. We've been slowly dropping this support in other places, and I think it makes sense to do this here as well. * Dropping support for old hook API. No one should really notice this. I personally did the work to update the hooks in the repos when I introduced the new API several months ago, and I prodded some of the hook authors in the AUR to update. Full shortlog below.
