This switch rings the terminal bell when user input is required.
Obviously, it has no effect if --noconfirm is also passed.

[pacman-dev] Please make the colourised output exactly like that of "pacman-color"
by Xavion 29 Apr '16
by Xavion 29 Apr '16
29 Apr '16
Hi All,
It's great that "pacman" finally has native colour support in v4.1.0. It's
just a shame that it's not as good as that of "pacman-color". Without
meaning any offence, it falls way short of the mark IMHO.
I'm hoping you can just replicate the colourisation of "pacman-color". For
your convenience, I've attached the relevant files you'd need. I'm only
requesting this because "pacman-color" no longer exists.

Regards, Xavion.

Now we have .SRCINFO in source packages, it would be easy to add the
source packages to a repository and have pacman be able to access them.
This will kill ABS in Arch!
There are two ideas on how this should be handled:
1) Add source package information in the .db file if it is there when a
package is added
or
2) Have a separate .source repository
I have listed the pros/cons of each approach here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:Allan/Pacman_Source_Repositories
I personally like #2, because adding them to .db files is a major
increase in size. Currently, signatures take up ~55% of the average
sync database size. With the source package also having a signature,
that increases the db by slightly more than that much again.
Any other comments to add to the debate before I make a final decision
and implement this?
Cheers,
Allan

Hi there!
As probably everyone noticed one time or the other, pacman output (in
particular progress bars) breaks whenever one resizes the terminal,
which leads to scrambled output like this:
https://paste.xinu.at/LNo/plain
This is due to the fact, that pacman always claims the whole terminal
width. Whenever one runs pacman in tmux (split pane) or uses a tiling
wm, resizing happens quite often and will produce such broken output.
Considering the output closely, we have quite some "uninteresting"
information there. All the 100% progress bars are actually redundant as
pacman does not continue installation (or download) if it cannot
retrieve a package. Also, it only downloads one package at a time, so
we only really care about the progress of the last package (or total
progress). I thus propose a different output:
https://paste.xinu.at/m-5XEa/
version1 uses a fixed 100 columns output, version2 a fixed 80 columns
output. In version1 it is possible to draw the per package progress at
the same line as the package name. When complete, only the package name
remains.
In both versions the currently downloaded package is always
the last line of the output. Both proposals contain an example for per
package and total progress. I'm personally in favour of version2,
because it seems safe to assume that we always have 80 cols available
and it also unifies the output style for both per package and total
progress.
To sum up the changes shown in the mockups, I propose:
* progress bars of database synchronising, download and installation
move on line below compared with the current output
* when a step is complete, the line with the package (or step) name
remains, but without any width-dependent progress bars. For download,
you find and example in the link above. For installation a finished
steop could look like this:
(26/63) upgrading opus
So basically just the redundant progress bar is removed here.
* The output is limited to 80 columns which should fit nicely as seen in
the example.
* Other output (such as warnings, errors, new optional deps, ...)
remains the same.
Is there any interest for such a change? If so, I could develop and
provide a patch. I'm also happy about comments, fine-tuning and further
improvements to the proposal.

Hi all.
In `alpm_initialize`, there's
sprintf(hookdir, "%s%s", myhandle->root, SYSHOOKDIR);
where `SYSHOOKDIR` is by default `"/usr/share/libalpm/hooks/"` (defined by `-DSYSHOOKDIR=\"@datarootdir@/libalpm/hooks/\"` in `AM_CPPFLAGS`).
This means that the resulting `hookdir` is `"//usr/share/libalpm/hooks/"`, or `"/something/else//usr/share/libalpm/hooks/"` if `--root /something/else` is passed on command line.
If you need a reason for changing this (other than programmer's tidiness), know that this causes trouble in Cygwin/MSYS2 as paths starting with `//` have special meaning.
I can send a patch, but I'm not sure what's the best way to change it. How about
sprintf(hookdir, "%s%s", myhandle->root, SYSHOOKDIR + 1);
with a corresponding change in the allocation above it and a comment explaining the magic number? It seems that `root` will always end in a slash and `SYSHOOKDIR` will always start with one, so I picked the one easier to remove.

[pacman-dev] [PATCH v2 1/1] libalpm: generate alpm.h on the fly and add version information
by Christian Hesse 28 Nov '15
by Christian Hesse 28 Nov '15
28 Nov '15
From: Christian Hesse <mail(a)eworm.de>
Programs linked against libalpm (for example packagekit) may want to use
preprocessor macros to check version and choose correct API. This adds
version information to alpm.h.

Large file support is enabled by our configure script as required. If anything
linking to libalpm does not also define large file support, there will be
differences in the size of off_t which are not caught until runtime.
Add the required CFLAGS to the pkg-config file so that users of libalpm know
what flags are required.
Signed-off-by: Allan McRae <allan(a)archlinux.org>
---
Tested with i686-Linux and x86_64-Linux. At worst, on other systems some flags
will be missed, making the situation no different than today...
