hi. so i just installed pacman 3.0.4 during my daily pacman -Syu. no pb libarchive and libdownlaod already installed so the first command i run was: pacman -Qo /usr/bin/versionpkg and it takes a avery long time !!! wtf ! during a compilation . so i stop the comilation and i time it: time pacman -Qo /usr/bin/versionpkg /usr/bin/versionpkg appartient à versionpkg 0.7.2-1 real 0m19.933s user 0m17.049s sys 0m2.316s and with 100% cpu usage the last 10 second !!?? i run /var/lib/pacman in a tmpfs so the pb of the filesystem fragmentation is not a pb. so i tried without the tmpfs. the same. i run pacman-optimize. it takes 51s this time !? now it's 19s again

Hi! IMHO this problem is more general and serious, and this should be solved. Either you specify some strict Arch packaging standards to avoid this bug or you improve pacman. I prefer the 2nd, and that is not easy; I make some suggestions here to discuss: First I define the goal: the content of foo's .FILELIST exists on filesystem iff foo is installed. OK, I assume that the goal above holds for all installed package; we just need to keep this during package install/removal. Install: -If we install /dir/file: That exists until package foo is removed (in normal case). If dir is a symlink, we MUST record the "real" destination of file to localdb/foo/files too, because the dir symlink can be removed/modified during an other package removal (or update!!: you can easily imagine a modified perl example where current is a symlink to the latest version...) or by the user. -If we install /dir/dir_symlink: First, we treat dir2 as a regular file, and do the steps above. Then we check if /dir1/dir2 exists. If no, we simply create it pointing to the requested dir. If yes and that is not a real dir, we can stop with file conflict. If yes and dir_symlink is a real dir, we can move its content to the dir_symlink-pointed dir, then delete/create_link dir_symlink; we must also record the file movements to the localdb as above (this is slow, queryfileowner needed, but this a rare case). Remove: -If we remove /dir/file: no extra work needed, just we need to use "real" path. -If we remove /dir/dir_sl: If dir_sl_pointed is empty or doesn't exist, then simply remove dir_sl. If dir_sl_pointed is not empty then we must create a real dir named dir_sl, and moved some files (we scan localdb for files need to be installed as /dir/dir_sl/file) from dir_sl_pointed to there (and record the movements to localdb again.). I for one would like to see this fly. Someone just bumped OpenOffice up a notch, hello Mr 158M download... For me the xdeltas should just be created as far as possible "without maintainer intervention" and stored alongside the package. One could put a size saving threshold on the delta into makepkg, if the delta is over say 50% of the size of the total package, it doesn't get uploaded... Once pacman 3.1 gets into testing I'll look at the code again. I've been running pacman with wget-xdelta.sh for some time now, its sad to see messages like these flash by... In trans.c , the .INSTALL file is extracted to /tmp/ for running the preinstall scriptlet. And in add.c , the .INSTALL file is extracted to $dbpath/local , which is by the way causing some issues : http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/pacman-dev/2007-July/008693.html I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to read the archive just in one place, and extracting files just once. Or well, I don't know what is the best way, extracting files to /tmp/ and then moving them around (like for backup files), or extracting them several times from the archive (like .INSTALL) , or maybe keeping the special dot files from the archive in memory or something. Well, it's not that important, but it's related to the issue in the link above, that I would like to fix, so I just wanted to know if everyone was happy with the current way pacman reads/extracts files from the archive.

Is it a good idea to localize pacman.log also ? Do other apps do this as well ? pacman.log can be handy sometimes for restore/repair purpose, if it was always in english, it would be very easy to parse, but having to take several languages in consideration make it much much harder. Anyone have a problem with this change (Aaron)? -Dan --- The old code attempted to upgrade pacman by itself and automate the process by creating a new transaction and a bunch of other complicated stuff. We should just leave such actions to the user to decide instead of trying to do it for them, and it caused problems when pulling in dependencies. For now, simply request that the user run a 'pacman -S pacman' operation. If they want, they can also answer 'N' at the prompt and the upgrade proceeds as normal. Wouldn't it be wise if the category information was added to each package's .PKGINFO file? That way clients could search for or in package categories and the capabilities of GUI front-ends could enhanced a great deal. As a matter of fact why was this possibility ever considered and if so why was the idea dropped?

This is a quick summary for all of us on the list to see if we are on the same page. I just wanted to get out what we've gotten accomplished in the last month or so, and where we need to go from here to maybe get a pacman 3.1 release pushed out the door. We have had some 272 commits since the version 3.0 tag, so we have gotten some work done, but I don't think any of us are very clear on where the 3.1 release should be. Things we've done: * A lot of makepkg cleanup courtesy of Andrew Fyfe. (http://projects.archlinux.org/git/?p=pacman.git&a=search&st=commit&s=makepkg) * Brought xdelta support into official makepkg- we still need to decide on a strategy for using this if we want to. * Switched to bsdtar usage in makepkg- we no longer depend on the multitude of unzip programs as bsdtar can handle most of them now. * Added several pactests to isolate small issues, most from Nagy Gabor. * Implemented topological support for dependency sorting, courtesy of Nagy Gabor. * Several other small fixes all over the place, and a good amount of code refactoring. * Gettext will now work for our shell scripts- we now have a whole lot more strings that need translating. :) * Bugs closed: http://bugs.archlinux.org/index.php?events%5B%5D=2&event_number=20&project=… Things to do: * Pacman and directory symlinks: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/7484 http://archlinux.org/pipermail/pacman-dev/2007-June/008638.html This is quite the fun little bug. ( http://archlinux.org/pipermail/pacman-dev/2007-July/008662.html) * Fix some bugs related to dependencies: FS 7495, 7416 * FS 7406- NREP umask issue. We should ensure that libalpm and pacman are setting sane umasks for their operations, and we don't get things that have the wrong umask such as db entries. * FS 7193- pacman -D is missing. We should reimplement this as a suboperation of -U such as --asdep or something. It shouldn't be too hard- look at the commit we removed this operation in and revert the parts of it that are necessary, and just use different command line flags. * FS 7137/7133- looks like DB issues * FS 7271- makepkg caching netfiles- should be a super quick fix for someone like Andrew (hint, hint) :) Just look at Roman's last comment * Asciidoc- this is coming along great, Andrew and I have a separate branch for now we are maintaining it in. This should make writing man pages much more pain-free. A few formatting issues probably need working out, but this will also allow us to make much prettier online HTML-formatted documentation. * Current pactests known to fail: requiredby004, sync022, upgrade051. If anyone else on the ML has things to add to this list, please get it out here. Eventually we can lay out a timetable for pacman 3.1 release and start doing some serious testing and regression testing. -Dan

[pacman-dev] Can the update of a package induce the update of its depends?

Hi! When I was thinking on the symlink puzzle, I ran into the question above. Let me explain: Suppose, that an updated version of audacious moves from /usr to /opt; and user does a "pacman -S audacious". In this case the installed audacious-plugins will be broken, because it thinks that audacious is installed to /usr. The dir change of audacious wasn't planned so audacious-plugins simply depends on audacious (with no version number), so audacious-plugins won't be updated. To avoid this, the package maintainer can do some ugly tricks only (conflicts, install_script/warn etc.). So it would be useful, if the maintainer somehow could record to the repo that there was a big change between audacious 2.0-1 and 2.0-2; so if user updates from a <=2.0-1 version to a >=2.0-2 version this will induce the update of audacious' depends (we can assume, that the updated version of audacious-plugins works fine with the updated audacious.). Or we can define a special ("major") version number, whose change indicates a "recursive" update. [pacman-dev] installing a package as user (permission problems)

Should pacman allow installing a package as user ? It looks quite hard to check for all permissions before doing anything. And if permissions are checked on the fly, and at one point it fails, it looks hard to revert what has been done. For example, suppose an user wants to install foo-1 package, and has write access to everything but $dbpath/local/foo-1/ pacman will be able to install the package, extracting all files on filesystem, but it won't be able to add the package in the database. So the package will be installed, but not recorded in the db. A permission problem can also appear earlier, eg during the extraction of files. Maybe all files from the package can be extracted except one, which needs to be installed in a directory without write access. That looks quite complicated to handle. Oh, I just remembered Dan's permissions branch : http://code.toofishes.net/gitweb.cgi?p=pacman.git;a=commitdiff;h=b06c89e3e5… "Remove geteuid calls and things related to uid checking in anticipation of reimplementing a more robust permissions checking system. This will allow libalpm to be used in situations where we do not always have root on a system (cygwin, dreamhost, etc.)." More robust permissions checking system, that would be cool. :) To Dan : what you had in mind would solve the problems above ?

Hi, hope this is the proper mailing-list to post this. I am new to ArchLinux and developing a package. I am having trouble to get the install scripts running, I tested the following (minimal) package: file x.install: echo "$0 with arguments: $*" >>/tmp/log # to be extended for pre- and post-install actions exit 0 file src/x #!/bin/sh echo "$0" exit 0 file x.build: pkgname=x pkgver=1.1.1 pkgrel=1 pkgdesc=('get the install scripts running') arch=('i686') install=x.install license=('GPL') build(){ mkdir -p ../pkg/opt/x/bin cp -x ../pkg/opt/x/bin chmod 700 ../pkg/opt/x/bin/x } building the package with the command: makepkg -p x.build The build succeeds and the resulting x-1.1.1-1.i686.pkg.tar.gz file contains all the right files and the .INSTALL file contains the code of the x.install file. Installing the package with: pacman -U x-1.1.1-1.i686.pkg.tar.gz succeeds also. The file /opt/x/bin/x is created. However, the file /tmp/log does not exist, while I expected it to contain several lines for at least pre-install and post-install. I did not change any of the pacman configuration files (on my base-install). Why does the install script not run? Thanks in advance for any clue. Siem Korteweg
