deps.c: check for indirect deps when ordering
On upgrades, indirect dependencies were not being detected if there was
a dependency in between them that was not part of the transaction. For
example, with the dependency chain: pkg1 -> pkg2 -> pkg3, if pkg1 and
pkg3 are being upgraded but not pkg2 pacman would not order pkg1 and
pkg3 properly.
This was particularly problematic when replacements were involved
because the replaced package(s) would be removed at the start of the
transaction. If an install script required the replacer and lacked
a direct dependency, it could fail.

With a non-GNU `make', it is safer to compile the package for one

+ On MacOS X 10.5 and later systems, you can create libraries and

+you can set and what kinds of files go in them. In general, the
+default for these options is expressed in terms of `${prefix}', so that
+specifying just `--prefix' will affect all of the other directory
+specifications that were not explicitly provided.
+
+ The most portable way to affect installation locations is to pass the
+correct locations to `configure'; however, many packages provide one or
+both of the following shortcuts of passing variable assignments to the
+`make install' command line to change installation locations without
+having to reconfigure or recompile.
+
+ The first method involves providing an override variable for each
+affected directory. For example, `make install
+prefix=/alternate/directory' will choose an alternate location for all
+directory configuration variables that were expressed in terms of
+`${prefix}'. Any directories that were specified during `configure',
+but not in terms of `${prefix}', must each be overridden at install
+time for the entire installation to be relocated. The approach of
+makefile variable overrides for each directory variable is required by
+the GNU Coding Standards, and ideally causes no recompilation.
+However, some platforms have known limitations with the semantics of
+shared libraries that end up requiring recompilation when using this
+method, particularly noticeable in packages that use GNU Libtool.
+
+ The second method involves providing the `DESTDIR' variable. For
+example, `make install DESTDIR=/alternate/directory' will prepend
+`/alternate/directory' before all installation names. The approach of
+`DESTDIR' overrides is not required by the GNU Coding Standards, and
+does not work on platforms that have drive letters. On the other hand,
+it does better at avoiding recompilation issues, and works well even
+when some directory options were not specified in terms of `${prefix}'
+at `configure' time.
+
+Optional Features
+=================
If the package supports it, you can cause programs to be installed
with an extra prefix or suffix on their names by giving `configure' the
option `--program-prefix=PREFIX' or `--program-suffix=SUFFIX'.

+
+and if that doesn't work, install pre-built binaries of GCC for HP-UX.
+
+ HP-UX `make' updates targets which have the same time stamps as
+their prerequisites, which makes it generally unusable when shipped
+generated files such as `configure' are involved. Use GNU `make'
+instead.
+
+ On OSF/1 a.k.a. Tru64, some versions of the default C compiler cannot
+parse its `<wchar.h>' header file. The option `-nodtk' can be used as
+a workaround. If GNU CC is not installed, it is therefore recommended
+to try

I've noticed some commands provided by the pacman package have help
messages that could be improved. Is it something that already is on
some todo list?
What kind of suggestions are welcome and which ones draw ire of the
developers? Anyone cares about colons, dashes and capital letters?
There is a significant variability in style, in which the '-h' output
is presented and I'd appreciate standardizing this.
I think '$command_name -h' should provide s brief description of what
the command does and methods of use. At least in some cases an example
is very helpful.
For example, compare
$ pacsort -h
pacsort v4.1.1
Usage: pacsort [options] [files...]
<options listed here>
to
$ makepkg -h
makepkg (pacman) 4.1.1
Usage: /usr/bin/makepkg [options]
Options:
<listed here>
Hey, '$command_name ($package_name) $package_version' is a neat idea,
I like it much more than '$command_name v$package_version' style of
pacsort.
But ... what does makepkg do? I think it should explicitly say this.
It's a text file, so let's see what's inside:
$ head -3 /usr/bin/makepkg
#!/usr/bin/bash
#
# makepkg - make packages compatible for use with pacman
OK, I think I get it.
pacsort is a binary, so what it does remains a secret ;P
What about the empty line between the command name and 'Usage' line?
Can we decide whether to add it to other pacman utilities' -h' output
or remove it from the ones that have it now? Is writing 'Options:'
necessary or can we just list them?
Some more examples can be found in the thread I opened on the forum:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=164943
I don't know if there's any interest among the developers in making
the -h' output (and later the man pages) better and if the ideas I
presented above do make it better in the eyes of those who matter or
it just nitpicking and fluff.
If you prefer less chatty and more formal style of writing, please tell me.

Hey all,
First of, please excuse me if I'm not doing this correctly. It's my first translation project.
Some days ago I noticed that Pacman was half translated in Dutch but what I saw disturbed me; it was poorly done (I mean no disrespect towards the translator). I looked into translating, so I made an account at Transifex and send a request to join the Dutch translation group.
I waited a day (impatient?) but am still not accepted. Regardless, I had a go at translating and I just finished translating all of Pacman itself in a couple of hours work.
I would like to push this to Transifex, but when I try to I get "Error 401: UNAUTHORIZED". I guess I have to be accepted into the team first to push translations? However, the maintainer seems to have been active last over a year ago so now I'm in doubt on what to do.
Should I wait a bit longer, or can I contact the maintainer some how? For what it's worth, the maintainer is "swilkens".
Thanks in advance for your replies,
Jente

makepkg --install doesn't quote the absolute path, so if the path contains
spaces pacman -U fails.

[pacman-dev] [PATCH] makepkg: Put script sourcing before var validation
by William Giokas 20 Jun '13
by William Giokas 20 Jun '13
20 Jun '13
As it is possible to set things like LOGDEST and PKGDEST in a PKGBUILD,
we should probably make sure that we can write to said directories
before just assuming we can and breaking functions when we can't.
Signed-off-by: William Giokas <1007380(a)gmail.com>
---
I don't think this should cause any issues, but packages that expect
$srcdir, $pkgdir, etc. to be set when assigning variables will not work
as intended anymore, but I have never come across any scrip that does
that, so not really too concerned.

[pacman-dev] [PATCH] query_fileowner: resolve trailing . or .. in paths
by Andrew Gregory 19 Jun '13
by Andrew Gregory 19 Jun '13

The full path needs to resolved any time it ends with "." or "..", not
just when those are the entire path. This allows strange-but-valid
paths such as: "/home/." to be queried.
