These two patches make image detection faster and less error-prone. Depending on a unique file system label, the /dev/archiso device is generated and archiso uses mkinitcpio's poll_device to wait for it.

[arch-releng] Official Arch Linux Install Guide changes caused by 2009.08

Hi all, the Official Arch Linux Install Guide ( http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Official_Arch_Linux_Install_Guide ) will need to be changed in various places because 2009.08 will use AIF and no longer archlinux-installer, which differ in various aspects. There are the IMHO following requirements: - current content should not be tampered with, so people who install 2009.02 now or in a few weeks have the correct guide - also after 2009.08 is released, the current guide should probably stay available (maybe under a different name "deprecated"?) for users who still use older discs - by the time 2009.08 is out, the documentation must match it, so we should start working on new documenation now. What I suggest is: - to copy the current page to a "new guide". the new guide gets a note it's only valid for 2009.08 and onwards. the current guide gets a note that says it's only valid until 2009.02 - when 2009.08 is released, I would rename the current page to add "deprecated" or "old" to it. and put the new guide in it's place. (afaik you can't rename pages in wiki's so basically it would mean "copy paste all content to the other") I know AIF best so I would take the lead in doing (most of) the required documentation changes. 1) Is this a good proposal? 2) I can't do any of the other languages, could translators pitch in? 3) I currently have no write access to the install guide (I seem to have no administrator privileges). 4) What would be the best practice for me getting started on the new content, allowing others to contribute but not to ruin my work? Lock the new page and have people email me with corrections? Dieter

Hi guys, As you may have read already (http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-releng/2009-July/000549.html ) we are working on a new release, which we would like to have out there by froscon. (22 august 2009) You'll find the alpha images here: http://build.archlinux.org/isos/ Target audience: interested hackers, eg the people on this list. Changes compared to latest release (2009.02): - kernel 2.6.30 (next set of images will have 2.6.30.1) - usage of the AIF framework/installer, no more archlinux-installer - aufs instead of unionfs - images are now built on a new build server (the one provided by sevenL networks), in dedicated releng chroots. This should make the "build-upload-test" cycles shorter. Those are the main things I think. The roadmap (basically our todo list of bugs and feature requests) is here http://bugs.archlinux.org/roadmap/proj6 The moment this list is empty, expect an official release ;) Please test and pay special attention to the "new things" such as the lvm/dm_crypt support in aif, the new FS editor, and the automatic procedure (for which you'll find an example in /usr/share/aif) Bugreports are always welcome on our Bugtracker. Also, we're not sure how we should take care of the documentation. http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Official_Arch_Linux_Install_Guide will need an update. Last time there was some discussion about this, but afaik the community contributed in this aspect. Hi, some notes on the upcoming snapshot (mostly my thoughts, but i guess Dieter would agree in general): * We plan definitely to have a new final snapshot(ISO/USB-Images) ready before and to be present on FrosCon (23./23. August 2009). * It will have kernel 2.6.30 (99% the 2.6.30.1) Maybe we could handle this in general: If we make new snapshots with a new kernel, we wait until first upstream bugfix release. * It will have aif as installer. Dieter and myself (and others too!) have done IMHO good work on aif. Our (private) test ISOs shows that the combination 2.6.30 and aif work without bigger problems now. * Next or next-by-one week we were able to present Beta (or better RCx images), so they could be tested by You.
