Hi, I think there isn't a real need to split PKGBUILD and $pkgname.install, this patch allows you to put the scriptlets functions into the PKGBUILD. This IMHO follows the KISS philosophy. If at least a {post,pre}_{install,upgrade,remove} function is found in the PKGBUILD, then the install file (if it exists) is ignored; otherwise, if there isn't any scriptlet function in the PKGBUILD the install file is included, as usually. Here is a little email to get ideas flowing on what will follow the 3.1 release in pacman development. I might as well start it off with a bang by saying I think pacman (and especially libalpm) would be best if it got a full cleansing and rewrite. This is one of those things that is just tough to do, but I think all of us can see the benefits in doing it. We've seen where our current interface is a bit lacking, and we could find many ways to improve on that. There would also be the ability to rewrite pacman to be much more efficient in some of the operations that are currently the bottlenecks (namely lists). Lists could be replaced by hash tables in a few places (package caches?), and in other places we could simply use better list structures in order to navigate them more efficiently. I really like the idea of using a kernel list implementation to do this, as it would enforce typing. However, the details of that may need to be reasonably well hidden inside the library. If we were to do a rewrite, I think the best way would be to do it slowly and one piece at a time. Start with the backend interface and slowly build from there, setting interfaces at each level. Much of the code could be gleaned from the existing codebase, but scrutinized a bit to ensure it is of good quality and doing things the way we want to. Other code would end up in some burning inferno somewhere never to be seen again, which would make me more than happy. If we don't do a full rewrite, something that really needs looking at is the list data structures we use. alpm_list_last (called by alpm_list_add) is a huge bottleneck, consuming 40% of the time in a pacman -Su operation from start to when you are presented with the package list to install. That is pretty pathetic. A pacman -Qo operation is another great example of the inefficiency of the existing list structure. Thoughts and comments welcome. -Dan

repo-add, repo-remove: 'bsdtar -c * | ...' doesn't work (you need '-f -'). Code clean up eliminated this bug. Removed the multiple checksum support, pacman now only supports MD5, so there's no need for the database to contain multiple checksums. Quote all variables containing file/dir names to prevent paths containing spaces from causing problems. Add msg, warning and error functions. General code clean up. pacman-optimize: Use a sub-directory in /tmp for working files to make it easier to clean up at the end. Add quotes round $@ in die and die_r, otherwise printf can't display the message correctly. makepkg: Disable colour output if stderr is not a tty. There are several bugs fixed in 3.1 (mostly fix from Nagy), but also that bug with tr_TR locale that makes pacman unusable. Maybe there should be a listing of things that needs to be done before a 3.1 release is possible, and then maybe make a testing package for users that wish to try pacman 3.1 before it's released : http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=272106#p272106

I may be missing some history here, but I am wondering why the package metadata is in a different format than the DB metadata. As far as parsing goes, it would be ideal to unify the two formats. Does anyone (judd, you're CC'd on this) know any reason to keep two different formats, or any tools that would be negatively impacted by such a change? Please note, a "negative impact" is not that same as "we have to change it for the new format" - more along the lines of "we can no longer do XYZ". -- Aaron

Hi, I've been using pacman for over a year now on DIY-Linux (http://www.diy-linux.org) and to put it simply it's great easy to use and easy to setup. So I thought it was about time I contribute something back... an improved version of makepkg. For the impatient :p see the script attached. makepkg2's use of fakeroot was a bit hackish, it's now very hackish in makepkg3. It also kicks up a few strange bugs (flyspray #6208) because it's being used where it shouldn't be. So I've rewritten/reordered makepkg to reduce the amount of time spent in fakeroot. Specificly it's now only used for... fake_install() (if it exists. See below) build() (if there's no fake_install) tidy_install() - remove docs - move/compress man pages - strip binaries/libraries - remove libtool files - remove empty directories create_package() - create .PKGINFO & .FILELIST - tar it all up everything else is run outside of fakeroot. Over at DIY-Linux we have a patch that adds an extra function to PKGBUILD (fake_install). This way we can prepare, compile, and test the package as the user running makepkg. Then fake_install is run inside fakeroot to install the package. This further reduces the time spent in fakeroot and the possibility of any weird bugs popping up. If the build script doesn't contain a fake_install function the build function is run inside of fakeroot instead (maintaining backwards compatibility with how things work at the moment). Other changes... - reordered the code to reduce the number of if..then..else cases - renamed a lot of variables so they're a bit more descriptive - started to add error codes for the different reasons why makepkg exits - quoted all variables that contain paths so '/home/me/a folder with spaces' doesn't cause errors. (but build scripts are still a point of failure as the majority don't have $startdir in quotes.) - fixed flyspray bug #6468 -- Localized dates for build/install date - added some more error catching - added the ability to choose between usr/man and usr/share/man (var (_MAN_DIR) at the top of the script.) There are still a few things that need fixed, but some discussion is probably required. - Should build deps be removed after a successful build? At the moment deps are only removed if '-r' is used and it removes build deps and runtime deps. An extra option to remove build deps? - Should root be a loud to run makepkg? IMO running makepkg as root is a hanus crime, and anyone foolish enough to do so deserves to have their system burn to the ground as the result of a broken build script. One mistaken key stroke in a build script can result in a successful build or the destruction of a system :p I've added a warning that asks the user if they're sure the want to continue running makepkg as root. With sudo and fakeroot there's no need to run makepkg as root, but thats just my opinion. If the source file can be found in the directory of PKGBUILD, makepkg creates a symlink in the 'pkg' subdir pointing to the source file (e.g. pkg/src.tar.gz -> ../src.tar.gz) instead of extracting it. This seems to be a bug. Here's the quick-and-dirty version of moving repos to $DBPATH/sync/$REPO. I don't much like it, to be honest - I'd prefer to separate the concept of the local repo from the sync repos entirely, but that would break the current interface into libalpm, as alpm_db_register("local") would, ideally, register a sync repo named "local", and we'd have to add another method like alpm_localdb_register() or something of that sort to register the local database. I could do the less-dirty fix, but I quite imagine the current API is supposed to remain decently stable, so here's one that works with the current setup. I'll try to keep this short and sweet, and hopefully this wakes up the ghosts on the mailing list and we can make a push to get 3.1 released sometime in the relatively soon future. I've made a PKGBUILD that I threw together tonight to actually test pacman on my system without killing the working pacman 3.0.X install. It installs pacman and all its files to /usr/local, which is rather convenient for testing as you can just switch that directory in and out of your path as necessary. It also skips the complicated renames of files, and as a bonus, gives our autoconf script some testing with alternate install locations. However, it is configured to use your current db and cache at the /var location, so don't think that is necessarily safe (although it better be). The things on my list that definitely need to be done: * Ensure our config file changes are not necessary; e.g. old config files should mostly work with the new software. I fixed a few of these issues tonight. * General usability tests. Make sure things are acting as they should, no regressions, etc. * Merge the asciidoc branch and get our manpages up to snuff. * Figure out why Doxygen is generating some extra unnecessary manpages, and find a way to kill it. * makepkg testing. A lot of it, I haven't really used the new one at all since I tend to build official packages with the current release of makepkg to make sure it doesn't break things. * Translation updates. This could be a killer, but even if people don't get all the scripts translated we should try to get the pacman/libalpm translations back up to 100%. We lost a lot of messages because we cut debug translations, so that should help. * Testing of every bug on Flyspray marked "requires testing" and set to be fixed in 3.1. * Anything else you guys can think of. Please reply and post it and make sure it gets addressed. I've already got some ideas for 3.2/4.0 up my sleeve, but I'll put those in another email so we stay on topic here. And unless your idea is absolutely essential for a 3.1 release, try to keep them there as well. -Dan

[pacman-dev] FS#7308 implementation questions

As I was browsing through the task list I stumbled upon FS#7308. This was a feature I also would like to have implemented so I thought why not try it myself! Because I'm lazy sometimes (who isn't) I don't always take care of any .pacnew or .pacsave files immediately so a nice timestamp suffix would prevent them from getting overwritten by pacman. Especially when you would like to see what changed overtime or when you just don't want that your old saved settings might get overwritten. So this is what i came up with: an AddDateSuffix directive in pacman.conf to enable this behaviour. If the option was enabled by the user add this timestamp suffix -YYYYMMDDHHMM (maybe even seconds??) right after .pac{new,save}. But while while going through some code I noticed the PATH_MAX constant, so can't we get in trouble if this is too small?? Another interesting post from the forum : http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=35901 The documentation of the --ask option is quite funny indeed : --ask number Pre-specify answers to questions. It is doubtful whether this option even works, so I would not recommend using it. TODO: docu- ment this more, as I have no idea how it works or when you would use it, or if we should just dump it. I made an attempt of understanding what this option did, and then documenting it, but I doubt it's clear enough. I'm not sure what should be done here : 1) trying to document this option better 2) trying to implement this feature in a better way 3) just dropping it (not sure that's a good idea, since it's apparently useful in some cases). I think that's also low priority (ie not needed for 3.1), but feel free to comment on this issue.

Here's a quick suggestion - far too many times I've seen people blow away their entire /var/lib/pacman/ folder in hopes of getting rid some error message or another, only to realize that pacman ALSO stores its locally-installed info there too and that they're now, essentially, screwed as far as pacman is concerned. Can we put this local info in a different place, or at least separate it from the remote db info a little more clearly? Like, for example, instead of the current set up of /var/lib/pacman/local /var/lib/pacman/current /var/lib/pacman/extra etc... we have /var/lib/pacman/local/ /var/lib/pacman/remote/current /var/lib/pacman/remote/extra etc... This structure, to me, makes more sense, since the "local" repo is a totally different beast from the remote repo info. This also allows the creation of a sync-able 'local' repo, like [local] http://localhost:8080/path/to/local/repo in pacman.conf without conflicting names. If nobody has any objections, I suppose I could hack a patch into the files backend that would do this, and possibly move from the current structure to the new one if it detects the old structure. In addition, those adventurous souls who like rm -r can be told to just rm -r /var/lib/pacman/remote and that will get rid of all remote repo information, which can be freshly obtained with pacman -Sy. I'm not trying to make it idiot-proof, but a clearer boundary between the local info, which should never be touched at the command line unless you really know what you're doing, and the remote stuff, that you can screw over until the cows come home and, in the end, just run pacman -Sy to get it all back. -- Travis
