[pacman-dev] Addition of a new package in a package group and how pacman handles it

Hey all I will briefly describe the situation: yesterday, Gnome 2.24 hit the repos. I issued "pacman -Suy" and, lo and behold, next time I logged in I was running Gnome 2.24. So far so good. But then I noticed that certain parts of Gnome were not there at all! It turns out, it doesn't matter if I have originally installed the package group named gnome and gnome-extras, their contents have changed (new packages added) but I did not get the new packages. Instead I had to issue a pacman -Suy --needed gnome gnome-extras in order to get the full package list. Now, I was wondering if this is on purpose or not and in my humble opinion, this is very counter-intuitive. When I first issued the "full upgrade" command, I didn't merely expect the system to bring all my packages to the latest version, I expected to have a "current" system, exactly as it would be if I had done a clean install. In fact, that's the main reason for choosing Arch: the fact that it is rolling release! This means, I expected the package manager to be smart enough to say "Aha, he wanted gnome and gnome-extras back then and I see no reason for him to *not* want the new gnome and gnome-extras now, let's install them!" Granted, this could be circumvented by issuing: $pacman --needed -Suy gnome gnome-extras but why should I be on the lookout for when a new gnome is out, for instance? Isn't that the job of the package manager? Here's an idea: why not keep track of package groups the user has *explicitly* installed and then by doing a "full-full upgrade" (let's say pacman -Syuu, double u), bring the new packages in? I could also argue that this behaviour should be the default one. Thoughts?

We never had a call to pclose() in here before, leaving our file descriptor in some sort of limbo state. In addition, clean up some of the other logic such as directly calling exit(1) on a popen() failure rather than going to our cleanup block, and handling and respecting the exit status of the subprocess correctly. Hi, pacman has an option --asdeps so the user can install packages as if it were deps. In fact, such packages will be treated exactly the same as normal dependencies: - if no explicit package depends on them, they will be considered orphans and are subject to be cleaned up, along with 'real' orphans. This can be a good thing when the user installs the packages --asdeps assuming a package will state them as dep later on. if doesn't happen it can really be considered an orphan and can be deleted. This can be a bad thing when the user installs the packages --asdeps because no package states the dependencies on them, but they are needed/wanted for some reason. (Often this means the "dependent" package misses a dependency and this package should be fixed, but not always) - in a backup/restore or clone system scenario the usual approach is to do 'pacman -Qe' to get a package list. When restoring/installing the list on another box this means we install only the explicit packages and their dependencies. Some packages we installed ourself --asdeps will get lost. This is not always good. A current workaround would be to install these packages explicitly, but doesn't always feel right either because we don't want the package explictly, although we do want them because they provide features to a package even though it's not really needed. In fact, this is very similar to the 'recommends' directive in debian package. Many arch packages literally say 'install x to have feature foo, install y to have feature bar' (these are the 'recommended' packages). If the user then installs x or y they are not really explicit packages (because we only want them because we use another package that recommends them), but they are not dependencies either (otherwise they will get lost) What I propose is an intermediate state between 'explicit' and 'dependency', called 'explicit dependency'. This would be the new default way when the user wants to install something as a dep (usually because a package recommended it), whereas the 'old' '--asdeps' installs a package as a 'real' dependency (eg: do this only when you're sure you'll install a package that depends on them, otherwise the package will be an orphan and get cleaned up someday or not be restored when restoring/cloning a system) What are your ideas? This patch addresses quite a few lingering issues in the pacman-optimize script. FS#11767 provoked this look-over and the following issues were noticed and fixed: * If an alternate dbroot was specified, then the lockfile location was never updated to reflect it. The lockfile location is now set after all dbpath initialization. * The inclusion of a trailing slash on dbroot was problematic and led to the following command being executed: bsdtar -xpf /tmp/pacman-optimize.p12Q4vAUWY/pacman-db.tar.gz \ -C /var/lib/pacman/.new/ It is doubtful we meant to create a hidden directory like this below our database root, only to go and delete it a second later and then re-extract. Fix the whole thing by ensuring our dbpath has its trailing slash stripped and then appending it when necessary. * The DB extraction was performed twice for no real apparent reason. This opens the door for extraction problems the second time around, leaving you with no original database to fall back to. Change the behavior so we only extract once, and then perform a directory shuffle once we verify the checksums are correct. * Perform an explicit sync after we drop the new database on the disk. It should work better this way. * Tighten up our check for a pacman lockfile and the time we create one. There is still a possible race condition but the window is shorter.
