We never had a call to pclose() in here before, leaving our file descriptor in some sort of limbo state. In addition, clean up some of the other logic such as directly calling exit(1) on a popen() failure rather than going to our cleanup block, and handling and respecting the exit status of the subprocess correctly. [pacman-dev] "explicit dependencies", a compromise between explicit and deps

Hi, pacman has an option --asdeps so the user can install packages as if it were deps. In fact, such packages will be treated exactly the same as normal dependencies: - if no explicit package depends on them, they will be considered orphans and are subject to be cleaned up, along with 'real' orphans. This can be a good thing when the user installs the packages --asdeps assuming a package will state them as dep later on. if doesn't happen it can really be considered an orphan and can be deleted. This can be a bad thing when the user installs the packages --asdeps because no package states the dependencies on them, but they are needed/wanted for some reason. (Often this means the "dependent" package misses a dependency and this package should be fixed, but not always) - in a backup/restore or clone system scenario the usual approach is to do 'pacman -Qe' to get a package list. When restoring/installing the list on another box this means we install only the explicit packages and their dependencies. Some packages we installed ourself --asdeps will get lost. This is not always good. A current workaround would be to install these packages explicitly, but doesn't always feel right either because we don't want the package explictly, although we do want them because they provide features to a package even though it's not really needed. In fact, this is very similar to the 'recommends' directive in debian package. Many arch packages literally say 'install x to have feature foo, install y to have feature bar' (these are the 'recommended' packages). If the user then installs x or y they are not really explicit packages (because we only want them because we use another package that recommends them), but they are not dependencies either (otherwise they will get lost) What I propose is an intermediate state between 'explicit' and 'dependency', called 'explicit dependency'. This would be the new default way when the user wants to install something as a dep (usually because a package recommended it), whereas the 'old' '--asdeps' installs a package as a 'real' dependency (eg: do this only when you're sure you'll install a package that depends on them, otherwise the package will be an orphan and get cleaned up someday or not be restored when restoring/cloning a system) What are your ideas? This patch addresses quite a few lingering issues in the pacman-optimize script. FS#11767 provoked this look-over and the following issues were noticed and fixed: * If an alternate dbroot was specified, then the lockfile location was never updated to reflect it. The lockfile location is now set after all dbpath initialization. * The inclusion of a trailing slash on dbroot was problematic and led to the following command being executed: bsdtar -xpf /tmp/pacman-optimize.p12Q4vAUWY/pacman-db.tar.gz \ -C /var/lib/pacman/.new/ It is doubtful we meant to create a hidden directory like this below our database root, only to go and delete it a second later and then re-extract. Fix the whole thing by ensuring our dbpath has its trailing slash stripped and then appending it when necessary. * The DB extraction was performed twice for no real apparent reason. This opens the door for extraction problems the second time around, leaving you with no original database to fall back to. Change the behavior so we only extract once, and then perform a directory shuffle once we verify the checksums are correct. * Perform an explicit sync after we drop the new database on the disk. It should work better this way. * Tighten up our check for a pacman lockfile and the time we create one. There is still a possible race condition but the window is shorter. [pacman-dev] Multiple/Shared Architectures

Hey, I've planned out a set of changes I want to try with Pacman and Makepkg. Most deal with creating a source repository setup that would store source files as their sha512sums, but that isn't related to this. Another thing that I want to do is have a "shared" repository for non-architecture specific packages. I would rather not use different repositories for the "shared" architecture, ie: core-shared, extra-shared. Here is my current mirror layout: icadyptes/i486/{core,extra} The shared architecture could be at: icadyptes/shared/{core,extra} I'm sure that this conflitcts with a few things inside libalpm, but here is my proposed implmentation: pacman.conf: SupportedArchs = i486 shared (Could have i686 too, or anything making this useful for other tasks) mirrorlist: Server = ftp://icadyptes.go-beyond.org/icadyptes/$arch/$repo A shared repository would save disk space on mirrors, as well as bandwidth (to a lesser extent). The makepkg implementation for this could simply be setting $arch to shared. Distributions using Pacman would need to change other things for this to work properly, but in my opinion, it is a clean change that could be very useful. Packages could be queried for just like they are if it is not immediately found in the first repository, checking until it finds an architecture with the package's name. This could serve other purposes, too. With additional hacking (and possibly pacman.conf options), doc files could be split into seperate packages (and hence a different repo), and be given the "doc" architecture. Users would add "doc" to SupportedArchs (I'm sure this could have a better name), and when they download a new package the doc files would come in a seperate package with it. SupportedArchs would also be ordered by preference, so perhaps it could be pentium4, i686, i486, shared, so that packages (on an incomplete build) more optimised for a certain architectures would be prefered over their lesser-optimum counter parts (sure that this induces a few potential problems though). Now that I think about it, there could even be a $distribution setting for people wanting to pull packages from multiple distributions :-P. You guys have already put a ton of work into Pacman, and made it one awesome package manager. Not sure if this idea interests you or not, but it is something I'd really love to have in my Arch fork. I'm willing to code this in myself, but I'd need to learn more C first, and am sure that any of you could do it in much less time. Let me know what you think of it, and if you have any suggestions or ideas. Thanks, Teran (sega01) PS: I think that the stock makepkg should default to arch=(any) if $arch is not set.
