Hello, the tidy_install makepkg function is composed of 5 parts : 1) Removing info/doc controlled by docs option 2) compressing man pages 3) stripping debugging symbols controlled by strip 4) removing libtool controlled by libtool 5) removing empty directories controlled by emptydirs So as you can see, all steps can be enabled / disabled with an option except step 2) It turns out it would be useful to control that too. For example, the zsh package has a special zshall man page that includes all others, but this only works with uncompressed man page. Working around this automatic makepkg compression is really awful and ugly : http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/4580 So would it be acceptable to add a "compress" option or something?

Currently, every options in pacman.conf apparently has a fixed case : RootDir = / DBPath = /var/lib/pacman/ CacheDir = /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ LogFile = /var/log/pacman.log HoldPkg = pacman glibc But in fact, pacman does an insensitive comparisons when parsing the file. } else if(!strcmp(key, "CACHEDIR")) { with key = strtoupper("CacheDir") So you can put cAcHeDiR if you like.. Then we found out this insensitive comparison didn't work in some locales, like tr_TR one, where for example, upper(i) != I To work around this, we also added a sensitive comparison : } else if(strcmp(origkey, "CacheDir") == 0 || strcmp(key, "CACHEDIR") == 0) { http://projects.archlinux.org/git/?p=pacman.git;a=commitdiff;h=1cd7567ff8af… So in fact, in tr_TR locale, only case sensitive options will really work (eg cAcHeDiR won't work). Why do we make a special case for this locale? I think that having to do every single comparisons twice during the config file parsing is really ugly, and more error prone when adding new options. So I would vote for only allowing case sensitive options in pacman.conf, to treat all locales equally, and cleaning the code :) If that's not acceptable, what about adding a new function, to do something like : } else if(compare(origkey, "CacheDir", "CACHEDIR") == 0) { That still isn't ideal but would at least reduce the duplication a bit.

I'm just checking if this could be a reasonable idea and if so I'd look into providing a patch. Would it be feasible to add a %PATHNAME% variable to the sync desc file ? For instance in this case, fetching "any" arch packages would not need to symlinked into the same directory to be found... %FILENAME% hotstuff-0.9.2-1-any.pkg.tar.bz2 %PATHNAME% ../any/ It may provide repo maintainers with some flexibility (hard to test without it being possible) and perhaps %PATHNAME% could also be a URL and that might also be interesting, but the simple relative path prefix would be useful. This is a patch to make Pacman only ask for confirmation if anything different from what the user requested (i.e. dependencies) is going to be installed. Since the user took the time to type out "pacman -Sy foo", they obviously did want foo installed, and it really wouldn't make sense to ask them this again unless something else will be installed.

This was already discussed here : http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/pacman-dev/2008-January/010940.html And then more recently in bbs : http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=43809 The guy there started to write a little script on his own, and that made me realize that the behavior he wanted is actually pretty close to the current -Sc code. Only a small part needs to be changed, most of the code can be re-used. But instead of only keeping the packages which are in the local database, we would keep the packages which are in a sync database. http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=330487#p330487 So I hacked a patch together. It's not really usable yet, because it's not configurable , only the second behavior will be used. It's only a proof of concept for now. (and anyway, it only prints the package that it wants to remove, it doesn't actually remove them, for testing purpose) I just wanted to know what others think about proposing two different behaviors for -Sc, and how the user could choose between both (maybe an additional flag, but which?).
