Couples of days ago we removed access for all non tier 1 mirrors and we did announce this action more than one month ago. I get the following message when trying to rsync. Wha can be the reason? It used to work. Tier1 mirrors don't sync ftpfull. The difference of ftpfull is that it includes other and archive directories. I don't think there is a need for mirrors to sync it. There is no point in syncing archive directory, it is permanently frozen. Since you already have it - you can just exclude it from rsync process. The other directory contains some sources and patches that have no other official place to be taken from. There's not much point in mirroring it if you don't mirror the sources. Besides ftp.archlinux.org both other and sources directories are available at mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/ @devs: do you agree with my points above? @Olivier: I suggest you to pick one of tier1 mirrors as the upstream. If absolutely you want to sync other and sources directories then you can use rsync://mirrors.nl.eu.kernel.org/archlinux/ (as mentioned above: to keep archive - just exclude it from sync) In any case please let me know which upstream you will use so that our db can be updated. -- Roman Kyrylych (Роман Кирилич)

[arch-mirrors] Outdated mirrors

Is it just me or are most of the arch mirrors outdated/slow-syncing? I sync every hour and its always the same. When there is a KDE update or so all the mirrors get outdated. This was a problem with the old mirroring scheme, and to me it seems to be the same now. Is this a problem with few Tier-1 mirrors or is archlinux.org still overstrained when there are huge updates? I am ready to set up rsync and allow 10-20 mirrors (start with 10 and see how it works with the bandwidth) in Europe, preferred Germany - if this can help us get our mirrors synced fast even with such updates. I think a bleeding-edge linux distribution should definitely not have issues with slow syncs. When there is a security update or an update like KDE it should be out there as fast as possible, no matter which mirror you use.

I'll be offline on July 2-11. After I come back and read all pending emails (if any) rsync access to rsync.archlinux.org will be blocked for all non-tier1 mirrors, which means that all mirrors that did not move to 2-tier scheme yet will not be able to sync from rsync.archlinux.org. -- Roman Kyrylych (Роман Кирилич)

Hi there ! Mirror mir1.archlinux.fr now syncs from gwdg.de. Syncing is done every hour, on a "random" minute (uses dcron's @hourly tag). Other technical details (access methods, URLs, ...) all remain the same. First impression : omg, gwdg.de is FAST! Hi, Recently the LAS (a laboratory of State University of Campinas, Brazil) received a mail about the changing in the mirroring (the tier1 and tier2 stuff). I'm planning to administrate (or, at least, help on it) this mirror. Is there any other useful info, beside the email (and the wiki page on it) that I should know before proceeding? We are currently planning in sync from rit.edu. Hi. Just wanted to let you know that mirror.archlinux.no now syncs with gwdg.de. I should also mention that it was Martin Sandsmark who originally set up the norwegien mirror, but due to hardware failue, we moved the mirror over to my box some eight months ago. -- Andreas Kalvå

Hi, I updated config for ftp.linux.kiev.ua ArchLinux mirror for the new 2-tier scheme and chose rsync://ftp5.gwdg.de as a nearest server. Now when I sync from the new server, I get "rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(1388) [generator=2.6.9]" error. Could you point me to the problem and solution? I use recommended options for rsync ( -rtlvH --delete-after --delay-updates --safe-links --max-delete=1000 ) Prior to the current server, I used mirrors.kernel.org for a quite long time and was quite happy with it, rsync options were -avzlH --delete Thanks. -- Roman
