I've no problems with moving vi as long as it doesn't disappear from the install media. It's useful to have around long enough until you can pacman -S vim.

Hi, We finally migrated extra to nymeria, here's a quick check list how to get things working again: Host name: nymeria.archlinux.org User name: same as archweb login name RSA fingerprint: cd:26:69:1a:7c:7f:bd:bd:42:4f:d7:ee:27:37:27:b4 DSA fingerprint: 11:a3:e7:27:9c:6d:8f:42:be:7c:31:93:05:1e:ad:36 ECDSA fingerprint: 6e:8b:ce:e4:74:92:3d:c2:67:9a:2f:8f:66:8b:96:e1 Migration: - dbscripts is in "/srv/repos/svn-pacakges/dbscripts" and there is a symlink "/packages" for easier access. community also got "/community" now. - authorized ssh keys have been migrated, user names have been changed to match archweb login names. - fix your ~/.ssh/config so the user name is correct (only needed for running dbscripts) - your old home from gerolde is available in /mnt/old_homes/gerolde/$user. Please only copy what you need and leave or remove the rest. /mnt/old_homes will be erased in a few weeks/months. - update devtools to 20130120 or newer - run the following for all checkouts: > svn relocate svn+ssh://gerolde.archlinux.org/srv/svn-packages svn+ssh://svn-packages@nymeria.archlinux.org/srv/repos/svn-packages/svn - do the same on pkgbuild.com if you use svn there - You might have to recreate some dirs in ~/staging. core, extra and testing are already there. - If you add a new ssh key to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys it can take up to 15 minutes before the key is added to the list of authorized keys for the svn-{packages,community} user. [arch-dev-public] Toolchain changes

In my ongoing quest to bring packages to being as vanilla as possible, I have made some adjustments to the toolchain. These are nothing that anybody should notice, but I though it worth a post here. The changes: 1) /lib and /lib64 symlinks have been moved from glibc to the filesystem package. Also a /usr/lib64 symlink has been added (see below). This will make updates more difficult (though not impossible) for those who do not have the /lib symlink yet. But if you have not upgraded in over six months, why do you use a rolling release? The workaround I provided of temporarily using a glibc-2.16 package without the lib symlink is in the process of dying anyway with packages build built with glibc-2.17. 2) The "pure64" patch has been removed from glibc. Well, part of it. I added a sed to keep the 64bit system library directory as /lib. Even though /lib64 is effectively the same, pacman-4.0 can not handle that well. This changes the ELF interpreter on x86_64 from /lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 to /lib64/ld-.... Again, symlinks make this not matter. 3) I do not adjust the paths in ldd any more - this required the /usr/lib64 for it to keep working. The /lib64 symlink is not enough as I configure glibc to use /usr/lib as its system library directory. 4) ldconfig gets a symlink in /usr/bin. This will probably be helpful in the future when /sbin dies. Also, I do not remove the default of ldconfig searching /usr/lib /usr/libx32 /usr/lib64, so "ldconfig -v" will complain about /usr/lib64 being given more than once as it is /usr/lib (and any other directory added in ld.so.conf) and about /usr/libx32 being absent. I might see if this can be fixed through adding a configure option upstream, but given no-one will probably notice it is not worth fixing. Wouldn't it be great if everything was just ./configure; make; make install... tl:dr; things will get more difficult for those who have not updated in six months, but no-one should notice any other change. [arch-dev-public] Clarity about initscripts and systemd status

Hi all, as systemd is now our default initsystem the current status of initscripts is a little vague. The problem is not the initscripts package itself but rc.d files and support in other packages. It is unrealistic to think we can support two different init systems. Testing on both systems is too much hassle and we already see packages that require systemd or are configured to use it by default. We never announced if and when using initscripts will get unsupported. Users don't know when they should migrate to systemd. I assume that initscripts based system will run into more and more issues over time; things will slowly fall apart. Ir will also be unnecessary hard for users to maintain an initscripts repo outside the official repos. Therefor we should define some dates when initscripts are no longer supported and rc.d (and maybe conf.d) scripts will be removed from packages. Random example: * Publish an announcement with the said dates and a link to a migration guide * Support for initscripts can be dropped e.g. end of December. After that packages may drop support; but not before. * rc.d scripts and other related files should be removed by end of January.
