Hi all, Spending some time outside the regular Arch circles, I realized that the way we "outreach" potential contributors is at least imperfect. One of the problems I keep hearing about is that there is no clear place where potential contributors could start. Sure, some things seem obvious to us: take care of some wiki article or adopt orphan AUR packages. It isn't actually that easy. Not everyone is interested in editing or maintaining random packages, and while there is plenty to do, how someone new could know it? We could use help not only with existing projects like archweb, pyalpm or namcap, but also with development of new code (for example a maintainable rebuild automation) and infrastructure side (which is in fact too generic term that could be better described). I am totally in love with What can I do for Mozilla?[1] which is open source, so why not steal this wonderful idea? But it also means we need a way to communicate with people interested in helping us: at least an IRC channel and new mailing list. Another thing that I heard in last few months isthat it is actually hard for potential TU candidates to find a sponsor. While I believe it is perfectly fine to e-mail few potential sponsors to ask for opinion, throwing random messages at people doesn't sound really appealing. In my humble opinion, we should rethink the way we recruit people and probably introduce fine-grained permissions to dbscripts that would allow to limit new maintainers to limited set of packages. We should also lower our expectations towards candidates. At least once we rejected one for some stupid reason (no fingerpointing here, I'm not saint either), leaving packages they wanted to adopt virtually orphan. It's better to help amn inexperienced packager gain experience than voting no, really; to be brutally honest, quite a lot of packaging work we are handling doesn't have much in common with rocket science. It is considerably less beefy than soyuz, but should be okay for regular builds. All packagers should be able to ssh into it with username and the key used on other servers. Hi team, Recently I've spent a bit of time on the train so I spent that on writing a script (of questionable quality) for generating packages cleanup list. The main difference from the "unneeded orphans" report is that it also includes orphans that require only other orphans and additionally generates possible maintainers for required but unmaintained packages. The script can be found here[1] and I will probably improve it a bit on the next journey. Note that it doesn't consider optdepends when checking if orphan is needed only by other orphans. Max. 3 packages requiring given orphan are listed next to possible maintainer. It also ignores repo hierarchy because it's just a theater these days. Please look at both lists and adopt what your packages are using or you're personally interested in. I will drop whatever makes sense in January. Hey all, I'd like to phase out cwiid [1] (as it's super old and unmaintained). Currently it's an optdepends for supercollider, but its use will be deprecated in the next version [2], so I will remove it there eventually. The only other packages depending on it are kodi (make) and kodi-eventclients. However, is it really required there? For now, I rebuilt cwiid, but I guess it could be dropped midterm, if it's not a hard requirement for kodi et al. I found at least two, that should be deleted (more to come probably): * clalsadrv - superseeded by zita-alsa-pcmi * glee - upstream dead, unmaintained for more than five years The first has no packages depending on it and the second only electricsheep, which also seems quite half-dead. Qt 5.10 is now in [testing]. Note that, due to Qt symbol versioning schema, every Qt application automatically gets a dependency on the minor Qt version it was compiled against, so Qt applications compiled against [testing] will have to wait in testing until Qt itself moves. Keep this in mind if you plan to push any Qt application to testing.
