[arch-dev-public] libldap forces us to add db4.5 to core

OpenLDAP cannot work together with recent db4.6. Last well supported db release is the db4.5 tree. db4.1 is to buggy and outdated to work well with recent ldap versions. I'm going to add db4.5 to core/lib. libldap/nfsidmap/nfs-utils depend on it. I will put it into testing to get some signoffs. OpenLDAP related packages from extra will also be rebuilt. This will save us also some rebuilds for the next db so.bump. Any concerns? Andy

[arch-dev-public] starting the repo cleanup

I will start removing packages now. It seems nobody else has the time or interest to do it. I will use Eric's list in our dev wiki. step 1: orphaned packages that are no (make)depends for any other pkg. I wonder about Eric's comment "Package | Reason to remove it. No reason implies we keep it" I think it should be the opposite. If any developer wants to keep it he should adopt it before it will be removed. If we won't do it that way we will stay for months for comments what the reasons are why we want to remove them. The reason is the poor (non existing) maintainership and low usage according the public wiki list. Is it ok to rm the whole cvs files including history and the package itself? I see no important reason why we should put the cvs history and pkg somewhere else. If any user or TU wants to pick it up again they would have to do it from scratch again. But we can also hold the cvs entries somewhere for backup for a while. I would need permission on that directory. Your choice. I hope there won't be hidden dependencies behind those packages :-/ step 2: find maintainer for other orphaned packages that are a (make)dependency. I will find out who the maintainer is and ask him directly or on the dev-public ml if he wants to adopt it. Of not it would intend to me we should remove also his still maintained package that depend on it. Hopefully we will find maintainer in most of these cases that way. If not we should decide what to do with those broken unmaintained dependencies. Any comments? I want to start very soon as I have some free time these days. Andy

[arch-dev-public] Gerolde update / reboot

Hey all, Just an informational email. Earlier today (~ 3 hours ago), Dale did an -Syu and reboot on gerolde. It was fairly flawless except for the php.ini merge. Special thanks to Pierre here for taking that up. Also, thanks go out to all you guys who maintain all these packages. I actually expected more breakage due to config file changes and the like, but it "Just Worked". Yay! - Aaron

Some developer seem to be so busy to have no time for updates for several months. Users start to complain about it. I've seen it for eclipse and glade. I can help out when I will find some free minutes. Please tell me if there's a certain reason to not update a package! Andy

[arch-dev-public] initscripts change: daemon shutdown

initscripts have been changed to only shut down daemons which use add_daemon and are thus in /var/run/daemons. Please fix daemon scripts which both need a shutdown AND don't have add_daemon. On my end, I will fix bluetooth. Please check your system for others.
