[arch-general] Archnosh - the nosh toolset packaged for Archlinux

Hello, The archnosh repository[1] provides the build files necessary to integrate the nosh[2] system and service manager with Archlinux package management, as of version 1.33[3]. The nosh toolset is part of the daemontools family of managers, several of which are already packaged[4] for Archlinux: runit, s6, daemontools, perp... The packages generated via archnosh follow the Debian packaging[5] provided by the author of nosh and allow for two major setups: 1. Running the nosh service manager under systemd Here systemd remains the default system and service manager but migrating a service to nosh supervision is just a matter of disabling it from systemd and enabling its equivalent with nosh. 2. Running nosh as both system and service manager This is a fully nosh-managed system, the nosh system manager runs as init. Various packages provide simple utilities which may be of interest in themselves, in particular the eponymous nosh script processor. The nosh toolset has currently been tested for the x86_64 architecture on qemu/kvm virtual machines and non-virtualised on a laptop with minimal installs of early 2017 Archlinux releases. Although further testing is of course ongoing, obtaining a useful working system is made relatively easy by the comprehensive collection of service bundles --the native service configuration and control mechanism-- packaged with the toolset. Pointers for installing on Archlinux are available in the repository README. A guide[6] is available for further information about nosh. [arch-general] Cannot reach archive.archlinux.org from behind a working proxy

I use Arch Linux in a corporate environment (YEAH :D) I usually update my system using this in the mirrorlist: Server=http://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2017/03/23/$repo/os/$arch (Whenever I actually want to update my system, I just edit the date in the mirror, this way I can make sure I update to a state which is tested at home already.) The sysadmin has created a proxy rule for me that allows me to reach the server through the company proxy using this: http_proxy=proxy.company.biz:8080 pacman -Syu So far this worked well, however some weeks ago it stopped working saying error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from archive.archlinux.org : Connection timed out after 10935 milliseconds The sysadmin says he can see my packet go through the proxy. I can't use another mirror for testing, as the proxy rule allows me to reach only archive.archlinux.org. Is it possible that my work IP address where I connect from (195.184.167.238) gets rejected at archive.archlinux.org?

Hello Steve Can you point out how you configured your system? (How many disks, how they are partitioned) Do you install grub on an UEFI system? [arch-general] /etc/libvirt/qemu/network/default.xml.pacnew permission change?

All, The original /etc/libvirt/qemu/network/default.xml has 0600 permissions, the new /etc/libvirt/qemu/network/default.xml.pacnew installs with 0644, is there any significance to the permission change or does the .pacnew just need to be put in place with 0600? [arch-general] Link against system libs

Hi all, I have a general question about linking in C++ with which you can probably clarify for me. Arch ships with a lot of libraries of which .a and .so are stored in /usr/lib and beyond. These libraries are compiled by some compiler, the compiler by which the entire arch linux distribution packages are compiled with. By the way, which one is this and where can I find that information. If this compiler is a c++ one, it does its specific name mangling. Thus, linking against these libs should only be possible for binaries compiled with the same c++ compiler. However, arch ships gcc6, gcc5, and clang. Does it also ship libraries for all these compilers or how is it possible for binaries complied by these different compilers to link successfully? Best, Wolfgang

[arch-general] Mount point of MTP devices?

Hello, I have recently installed Arch on my desktop machine (KDE). I want to access android device (MTP) from terminal. The device is accessible from file manager (Dolphin). This means it has to be mounted somewhere (right?). It's not mounted in '/run/user/1000/gvfs' directory I have following packages installed: gvfs-mtp 1.30.3-1 libmtp 1.1.12-1 mtpfs 1.1-2 Where are mtp devices mounted?

[arch-general] Suppressing specific pacman warnings

Hello, I have some unofficial repos added in pacman.conf, and at times use ABS and the AUR, so I often get messages like this: # LANG=C pacman -Syu ... :: Starting full system upgrade... warning: udevil: local (0.4.4-2) is newer than community (0.4.4-1) ...(10 messages from unofficial repos)... First of all, why is this a warning? What is the problem of me having a newer version of a package than the repository? --quiet does not help. I could do # pacman -Syu 2>/dev/null but this supresses *all* warnings. Also if I need to hold ignore a few packages, I get this (which actually makes more sense as a warning): warning: haskell-src-exts: ignoring package upgrade (1.17.1-8 => 1.18.2-4) which I know already, since I'm the one who put it IgnorePkg. I looked in the manpage for pacman.conf and also found nothing to quiet specific warnings like this. Could they at least be less verbose? Say, in one line: warning: ignoring (42) package updates (for nvidia, nvidia-dkms, haskell-src-exts, ...) I found this old bug report (https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/31594) regarding this, but there's no decision about it. I'd like there to be an option to quiet these, possibly in pacman.conf: QuietWarning = NewerThanRepo | IgnoredUpdate | ... What do you think? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. João Miguel

You could use basic shell redirection; pacman -Syu 2>&1 | egrep -v "is newer than" The example uses egrep because that is easy with multiple patterns (seperated with pipe symbols). For real ease, test a few cases, then make a function of it. Mvg, Guus Snijders

Can someone point me at what I've missed please:- I'm doing a new installation of archlinux & got as far as installing grub apparently without problem. Installing grub gives:- Failed to get canonical path of `airootfs' This means nothing to me & I can't find anything. Could use some guidance before I start again, or even better instead of starting again. Steve
