Can this patch https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=33142 be applied to Arch's xorg? It solves famous problem https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865 with broken keyboard input for users who use multiple keyboard layouts without any noticeable side-effects. Hey everyone, I'm trying to get my laptop backlight keys (fn+f6/f7) to adjust the brightness of my toshiba laptop backlight. Previously, I had entered the following in my /etc/acpi/handler.sh to handle the acpi events generated when those keys were pressed: video/brightnessdown) echo $(($(cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness) -1)) > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness ;; video/brightnessup) echo $(($(cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness) +1)) > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness ;; However, as I am working on migrating to systemd, acpid no longer runs and hence does not handle these events. [arch-general] Sound problems

Good evening, I'm having troubles getting sound to work aftereach reboot. I've followed the instructions from the wiki. But after each reboot I need to run alsamixer -> selct the soundcard by pressing F6 -> and then have to increase the volume of the speaker. When invoking systemctl enable alsa-restore.service and systemctl enable alsa-store.service I do get the following error messsage: The unit files have no [Install] section. They are not meant to be enabled using systemctl. Possible reasons for having this kind of units are: 1) A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's .wants/ or .requires/ directory. 2) A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has a requirement dependency on it. 3) A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer, D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...). ... and it starts from the beginning after the next reboot. BTW it doesn't help when I change the settings in /etc/asound.conf from pulseaudio to the hw device. Thanks for any help Frank

Hi, everyone. I've a HP Pavilion g4 machine with UEFI, using rEFInd. After a upgraded to refind-efi 0.6.4-1 and linux 3.7.2-1, my system stopped to boot. rEFInd loads properly, and others boot options, like EFI Shell and Windows 8 are working, but trying to boot kernel 3.7.2 froze on the message in begin saying "Starting vmlinuz-linux ...kernel options". initrd was built correctly. This issue only occurs with linux 3.7.2, downgrading to 3.7.1 makes system bootable again (from where I'm writing). rEFInd config file is basically default, only with timeout changed to 5. My boot options: root=/dev/AndreSYS/Arch resume=/dev/AndreSYS/Swap cryptdevice=/dev/disk/by-uuid/e38e188e-f775-41fe-9607-ce977c7716d8:syslvm ro add_efi_memmap rootfstype=ext4 -- https://profiles.google.com/andre.vmatos

[arch-general] Linux-3.7.3-1-i686 blank screen

I ran pacmatic -Syu last night, which updated the kernel to the version in the subject. This afternoon, the system started to boot normally but the display went blank before the login prompt appeared (I boot to a text login) so I was unable to use the system. I used my original installation disc to boot, and was able to follow the Wiki instructions (accessed using a different computer) to run chroot and downgrade the kernel to 3.6.11-1, and the system is now running again. An 'unconfirmed' bug is listed at <https://bugs.archlinux.org/> but this seems to relate to vlc segfaulting with the new kernel, so I don't know if that's the same problem affecting me. -- -- ^^^^^^^^^^ -- Whiskers -- ~~~~~~~~~~

[arch-general] System doesn't load LVM volumes when booting in single user mode

Like the subject says, when I boot directly into single user mode, system doesn't load my LVM volumes. So the only way I can realistically use single user mode (since many of my key files are on LVM volumes) is to boot the system to multi-user mode, and the "telinit s" to drop back down to single user. This seems like an error, and that systemd should be starting LVM volumes even in single user mode. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be and/or a workaround? Thanks, DR

[arch-general] Problem with NFS on shutdown

I've got two machines in my local network that provide NFS shares. One is an old Raidsonic NAS (running a current version of OpenWRT), the other a dedicated server running Slackware). I normally mount the shares manually (the machine that is giving me a problem is a laptop, so its often not connected to my own network). The problem comes when I try to shut the laptop down (or restart it). Unless I've manually unmounted the NFS shares, the machine will hang and fail to shut down. In some instances, I've been able to use CTRL-C to break out of the stall, but frequently, I can only turn the machine off, which is not exactly ideal. I've been playing with the nfs exports, currently have the following: /mnt/sda2/stor 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0(rw,sync,no_wdelay,nohide,no_root_squash) (this is on the Raidsonic) and /mnt/sda2/stor 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0(rw,sync,no_wdelay,nohide,no_root_squash) on the Slackware server. The problem is specific to Arch - I've got two other distros installed on the laptop (though Arch is my usual OS). From SalineOS or Salix, the laptop will shut down or restart without having to manually unmount the NFS shares prior to shutdown. I suspect I've not got something set up correctly in systemd, but I'm currently at a loss to work out what. If I manually unmount the shares before shutdown, there is no problem. I've also tried adding the unmount to /etc/rc.local.shutdown, but that doesn't work - the system still hangs during shutdown. I'm sure that rc.local.shutdown is being executed - if I shut down without the shares mounted, I can see messages that they are not mounted. I'm not sure if I should be looking at the NFS export parameters on the hosts, or systemd on the laptop, though I've tried some variations on the exports without changing the behaviour. Does anyone know what I should be looking at to solve this? Paul.

Hi, It's time again for the yearly cleanup of the [community] repository. Somehow, time passed, and it's now too late for a "Christmas Cleanup" like last year. Instead I'm announcing a Winter Cleanup, which I think is a better name as well. The wonderful developers of Arch Web have added a report of "Uneeded Orphans" since last time, which should make this cleanup considerably easier. (Thanks Dan McGee: https://projects.archlinux.org/archweb.git/commit/?id=5379348c9337a4abe27e8…) Another positive development is that all the ibus-packages that nobody seemed to want to adopt, are no longer orphans. Thanks goes out to Felix Yan, one of our latest TUs, for that. The list of unneeded orphans can be viewed at this page: https://www.archlinux.org/devel/reports/unneeded-orphans/ If you know of other packages that deserves to be cleaned up somehow, in [community], AUR or any of the other repositories, please reply to this e-mail and let us know. (If there should be too many requests, we'll start a wiki page this year as well). If there aren't any protests, I'll wait a couple of days and then move all the unneeded orphans in [community] to AUR. Developers and maintainers of [core], [extra] and [multilib] should feel free to join in on the cleanup, of course. Having an issue with nmbd failing to start, with no real reason shown in the logs as you can see below: Jan 30 11:10:34 sideswipe systemd[1]: nmbd.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE Jan 30 11:10:34 sideswipe systemd[1]: Unit nmbd.service entered failed state Jan 30 11:12:21 sideswipe systemd[1]: nmbd.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE Jan 30 11:12:21 sideswipe systemd[1]: Unit nmbd.service entered failed state smbd.service seems to start fine. I've tried enabling NetworkManager-wait-online.service, but to no avail. I'm wondering why nmbd is not producing any relevant error messages in my logs, too.
