[arch-general] [PATCH (dbscripts)] Fix permissions of incoming packages.

This patch changes the permissions of uploaded packages to 664, before they are moved from the staging directory. The commitpkg script included in devtools uses rsync to upload packages, and rsync preserves permissions. This causes problems whenever permissions are too restrictive on the uploader's machine. [arch-general] svn packaging, abs => git ?

Couldn't find any discussion about this, but what about we maintain our packages in git instead of svn? pros: 1) git is awesome 2) we don't need abs/rsync anymore. users can just read from git. 3) git network communication is more efficient then rsync (afaik) 4) users can check out older versions of packages easily, with limited storage overhead. 5) makes it easier to maintain forks of packages (have your own git repository with some changes, then merge in upstream changes to keep them up to date. upstream == arch linux here) cons: 1) using git for abs will use more disk space because you need the checkout + the repo (a 60% or increase or so? my abs tree is now 57MB, so even if this becomes 100MB that's still ok imho) 2) svn->git migration is not trivial, since tools, the website, .. will need to be adapted. The file had permissions of 0600. When I used communitypkg to upload it, rsync preserved those permissions. My next message will have a patch for dbscripts. [arch-general] New xorg-server package braks fluxbox?

Hi, Today's pacman -Syu installed new xorg-server package: % pacman -Qs xorg-server local/xorg-server 1.7.5.901-1 (xorg) X.Org X servers I have xorg.conf configured without hal support: Section "ServerFlags" Option "AutoAddDevices" "False" Option "AllowEmptyInput" "False" EndSection I also have fluxbox installed: % pacman -Qs fluxbox local/fluxbox 1.1.1-1 A lightweight and highly-configurable window manager And with the new xorg-server the behavior I'm seing is that if I try to maximize/minimize a window, fluxbox freezes, but if I do top, I don't see any process eating resources, neither memory, neither cpu... Another weird behavior, is that fluxbox keys are dead. I configured for example: # alt-left / alt-right Mod1 Right :NextWorkspace Mod1 Left :PrevWorkspace And they don't work. Well, if I try them like between the 1st 2 seconds, they actually work, after 2 seconds, they don't do a thing... I don't think this is a video card issue, since I have the same issue with a nvidia video card, and an ati video card: Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation" BoardName "Quadro FX 570M" ... Driver "radeon" VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc" BoardName "Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000]" Is this a bug? I don't want to use hal, but perhaps it's inevitable now as opposed as before, when we could still not depend upon it... I have problems with the latest update and EncFS. Did check out the bug reports at Arch and EncFS and after downgrading Boost to 1.41 I now do not get the config file reading error anymore. Unfortunately trying to decode my data results in "Error decoding volume key, password incorrect", my password is definitely correct. I downgraded OpenSSL to 0.9.8k-3, still no luck. Does anyone have the correct combination of EncFS, Boost, OpenSSL and whatnotelse to get my data back? Manne

Problem is the resulting firefox package does not link against qt at all. Even a running firefox process does not have any Qt dependencies. There are also xul related errors in the makepkg log. Guys, I have made friends with pacman in most areas, but one are I still don't know is " How to I find the uninstalled package that will provide xxx?" pacman -Ss must just search package names and not the contents. A lot of people have been getting bit by mirrors being out of sync. Fundamentally, this comes down to a mirror's database tarball being ahead or behind of the packages which actually exist on the mirror. Rsync is made for bulk updating, but it is not atomic, and bad things happen if you interact with a mirror while the rsync is running. Generally, you get package not found errors. This can be fixed, but it is a pain to deploy, because the mirrors require an update. Here's the what mirrors (probably) should be doing: wget ...../core.db.tar.gz -O core.db.tar.gz.new # and the others rsync --delete-after --exclude="*.db.tar.gz" rsync://...... mv core.db.tar.gz.new core.db.tar.gz # and the others The key differences here: put off deleting files as long as possible (rsync's default is to delete before transferring new files, causing all sorts of trouble), and do not release the new DB until all the new files have finished transferring. This is hardly the same type of guaranteed transaction you get with a ACID database, but it should eliminate most all of the current errors. There does not seem to be a documented "standard rsync" command for the mirrors to use, so I'm making all sorts of wild assumptions about what a mirror's rsync is doing. -Kyle

Hi, I would like to create a (custom) netboot install image of archlinux to facilitate installation within our department. I have few queries regarding the corresponding mkinitcpio.conf. 1. How do I use custom hooks together with standard hooks *without* installing them in /lib/initcpio/install. Or in other words can I configure mkinitcpio to look for hooks in other locations besides the standard locations. There are two options that I can think of both of which looks ugly to me. * install custom hooks in the standard location /lib/initcpio/install. I would don't like this because I don't want to mess up the standard directory for testing these hooks. * copy all the hooks in the standard location to a new location. Install the custom hooks there as well and set the mkinitcpio to look at this new location. There does not seem to be an option for this, I might be stupid not to spot it, but appropriate fakeroot + chroot can make this work 2. I would like to have the minimal set of packages on the netboot image to reduce size. The actual installation will be from the local mirror of course but some packages are needed to start the process. What is the suggested package set ? Is the whole of base okey or is it an overkill? 3. How does one provide standard packages on the rootdir. I would assume the initial ramdisk should act as the actual root during the entire installation process (I don't want the NFS mounting mess). The algorithm seems like (1) install the appropriate packages via pacman --root /foo (2) get the entire subtree on to the initial ramdisk. For step 2, I would need to set BINARIES and FILES of mkinitcpio.conf appropriately. I would rather enjoy Vogon poetry. Is there a better way? Regards, ppk

Hi, Flashplugin keep crashing which makes Firefox unstable. with chrome, only the plugin crashes. But this way I am not able to experiance any flash based website. the thing that annoy me is that flash does work fine my lappy with OpenSuse. Anyone experiencing similar issues? [arch-general] Amavisd-new Only in AUR?

I know I can download packages from AUR but I really could not believe that 'amavisd-new' is not in 'Community'. I would think this tool for email / virus scanning would be popular enough to be voted into 'Community' repo. Does anyone have any idea what is holding this software back from getting votes / moved into the 'Community? Hello and a happy new year, I have noticed print problems on my pc sine the release of KDE 4.0.0. I guessed that I had to wait that the KDE 4 or Qt 4 print backend got better. But at the moment I use KDE 4.3.4 on Arch Linux with pnm2ppa from AUR and CUPS. My box is up-to-date. I can print with Firefox, GIMP, OpenOffice and GNOME applications but I cannot still with KDE 4 or Qt 4 applications. I did not find anything about that issue. Can someone help me? Bye Lars

Hi, today I have released a new release of the windowmaker package. The important change is the GNUstep directory. I have changed this to /usr/lib/GNUstep. It was requested as a bug report (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/15301) and it’s now equal to Debian’s GNUstep directory location. That means, you have to change the directory for the WPrefs.App which has now the new location. All other things should be run without problems. If you have older GNUstep applications, you have to recompile them with the new location if they way located in the old GNUstep directory. -Daniel

Hi guys, i'm just trying to get grub2 support in archboot's setup. Now i have found an irritating thing it seems it doesn't like xfs and the ususal xfs_freeze hack from grub1 is not working anymore. Does anyone already use grub2 with xfs and if yes how did you solve this issue. [arch-general] Automatic LVM assembly - call for testers

Traditionally, LVM is assembled by running "vgchange -ay" manually. That has several problems, especially if one of the physical volumes is missing when the VG was supposed to be assembled. This has been experienced by people who use LVM on USB storage for their root device. I came up with a way of assembling LVM automatically through udev: A udev rule combined with a short shell script waits until all required physical volumes have been detected, then assembles the volume group in the background. This also works when adding a removable device to the system at any time. I'm asking anyone with LVM and a bit of spare time to test this. I'm especially interested in results from people who have a volume group on more than one hard drive. This is how it works: Get the package from: http://dev.archlinux.org/~thomas/lvm_autoassemble/ If you want to use this for detection of your boot device: Replace the "lvm2" hook with the "lvm_autoassemble" hook in mkinitcpio.conf and recreate the initramfs (make sure to keep a copy of the working one, as always). Possible side-effects: There may be some trouble when dealing with removable devices that contain LVM physical volumes: The volume groups are automatically activated, but have to be deactivated manually before removing the drive. Furthermore, when you remove a device and add it again later, the mechanism that detects whether all PVs have been found might fail and "vgchange -ay" may be run too often. Another side-effect is that I didn't add --ignoremonitoring to the script, so dmeventd may be started in initramfs (for mirror or snapshot volumes), which may not be desired. Any feedback is welcome.

I have some ancient hardware, specifically an AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ with a PCI IDE Controller: $ lspci | grep Mass 00:0a.0 Mass storage controller: HighPoint Technologies, Inc. HPT366/368/370/370A/372/372N (rev 04) Also, I have IDE devices from hda to hdg, some of them connected to the aforementioned PCI IDE controller. There are 2 raid devices configured: # cat /proc/mdstat Personalities : [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] md1 : active raid5 hdb1[0] hdf1[2] hde1[1] 234436352 blocks level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [3/3] [UUU] [================>....] resync = 82.2% (96372676/117218176) finish=19.5min speed=17746K/sec md0 : active raid5 hda2[0] hdg2[2] hdd2[1] 156199808 blocks level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [3/3] [UUU] unused devices: <none> The rebuilding device has devices connected to the PCI controller. All other devices are handled by sis5513, btw. also from /lib/modules/*/ide The autodetect hook from mkinitcpio thinks that pata_hpt366 is the module of choice. But it doesn't work. It crashes the kernel after some time, unfortunately not reproducible and without a log message. The box just stops responding to anything, including a ping. So I guess this something like a kernel panic. The IDE driver (hpt366) works like a charm, but it doesn't seem to generate udev events, so the device nodes don't get created in the initrd, and I'm stuck with a busybox prompt. Hi List, The attached patch fixes a TODO in lib-pacman of aif. Instead of hardcoding that `core' is always available locally and falling back to net for others, it now checks /src/ for repos. It assumes repos are stored at /src/$repo/pkg/. All these repos are added as cache dirs. While preparing pacman, a number of repo names are provided to be prepared. All those repos which were requested are added as actual repo. If this repo is available locally, the url points to disk. Otherwise it falls back to the mirrorlist. Please let me know what you think. [arch-general] Automounting internal devices in Gnome

Hi, Before Gnome 2.28 (I've been using Arch since 2.22, I guess), Gnome used to be able to mount my internal devices (in this case some NTFS partitions I have, and yes use Windows sometimes...) automatically (I just had to grant a permission on a neat GTK interface). I guess that magic used to happen due to a set of softwares working together, those being HAL, DBus, PolicyKit and Gnome. When Gnome 2.28 came out (and also devicekit-*, the replacement of policykit with polkit and the deprecation of HAL) this neat magic dissapeared and I've looked for many solutions in the forums or in others places but I couldn't found one. Everytime I want to use those extra NTFS partitions, I have to manually click one the "Places" menu and select the device, after clicking I'm prompted for my root password. I type it and the disk is mounted. But that's boring (all my musics are stored on the NTFS partition, so everytime I want to listen to them I have to do this). I even managed to supress the prompting for the password but I believe that due to some update that stopped working. $ cat /etc/polkit-1/localauthority.conf.d/61-custom.conf [Automount Devices] Identities=unix-group:storage Action=org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.* ResultActive=yes ResultAny=no ResultInactive=no The above doesn't work anymore (I have to enter the password everytime). [arch-general] Crazy cursor with Linux Wacom on Tablet PC

Hi All, I have a Lenovo X200 Tablet PC, and I've been using Linux Wacom drivers from AUR [1] with no problems. A few weeks ago, I decided to check for new drivers, and I not only found that I wasn't using the last linuxwacom drivers, but that they have been changed to xf86-input-wacom [2]. Ok, I removed the linuxwacom paquet, and compiled & installed the new ones. But I discovered that the pen has gone crazy, as you can see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGCjuniMYbY . Sorry for the video, but I didn't know how to explain the problem with just words. Touching with finger works ok, it just needs calibration to correct a little displacement. The PC is a Lenovo X200 Tablet, I've tried xf86-input-wacom and xf86-input-wacom-git [3], I've tried with no xorg.conf file (auto configuration), and using an xorg.conf file as commented in ThinkWiki [4], and the behaviour is always the same. I've tried to recompile the old linuxwacom, but the current version in AUR doesn't compile, and I don't have a copy of the previous version I was using. Of course, I've also tried googling, but no results with "Linux Wacom flickering cursor" or similar wording. Any hint? Maybe this doubt is more suited for Linux Wacom developers that General Arch Linux? Normally the nm-applet puts me online automagically. Not today. :-( nm-applet showed up as disconnected when I booted up and logged in today. (Only time I've ever seen that happen before is when I had accidentally turned off the wireless switch on the laptop.) I was just poking around in my /etc/groups when I found rtkit:x:99: I suspect this belongs to rtkit in some way. However, this group id conflicts with nobody:x:99: Looking at the rtkit.install I notice that the group id isn't hardcoded, so I don't quite know how this could have happened. Guys, Working through the setup of my new server, I rad across a wonderful hidden time-saver in /etc/pam.d/su. If you have configured sudo in the normal way by providing sudo access to members of the 'wheel' group, you can avoid having to type the root password to 'su' by uncommenting the following line in /etc/pam.d/su: auth sufficient pam_wheel.so trust use_uid As the comment says, the entry causes pam to implicitly trust members of the wheel group. Eliminating the need to type a 14 char pw 10 times a day is a time-saver. My only concern is how secure it is to allow pam to do this? [arch-general] Daemon No Longer Writes To Logs

I was looking at '/var/log/mail.log' which is the default location Postfix MTA writes everything it does to. I was sadly in that file using Vim and deleted the last line. I didn't restore the removed line and simply saved the file. I noticed now that the Postfix daemon no longer writes anything to the log file since I edited it. No permissions have changed at all. It's still in the same location and owned by the same UID/GID. Code: -rw-r----- 1 root log 189 Mar 3 08:37 mail.log I can see that Postfix is however logging everything under '/var/log/everything.log' Anyone know how to fix this? I am worried I broke Postfix but mail is still flowing and I get no errors at all from Postfix. It's just not writing to 'mail.log' any longer.

[arch-general] Blacklisting of modules

Hi folks, After initscripts' update I noticed that the modules, being blacklisted in rc.conf, were loaded. I tinkered around a bit (extended rc.sysinit with calls to lsmod) and found out, that udev loads most of the modules (rtc-Modules are loaded before, modules for hdd-access come from the init-ramdisk, cpufreq-modules are not loaded) in rc.sysinit lines 78 to 84. As far as I'm able to understand the code (I used grep to look for occurences of MODULES) udev has no knowledge of the MODULES array, so all modules are loaded. Therefore blacklisting in rc.conf would be useless. Switching the MOD_AUTOLOAD flag changed nothing at all for me, so it seems to be useless as well. I then created appropriate foobar-blacklist.conf files in /etc/modprobe.d/ to blacklist the modules. I can see that the printer is on http://eva:0/ so I suppose that the printer is connected remotly, so make sure there is no problem on the remote machine. I have MP610 connected via Samba Share (it's plugged into a Windows machine) and CUPS says "success" no matter what the result is. It shows status "fail" only when CUPS fails to convert the document or send it to the printer. Guys, I don't know who does the wiki editing on the "Installing with Fake RAID" page, but a lot of the helpful information was deleted and it has been edited down to the point that it is confusing. I rebuilt my home server last night and moved my last suse server to Arch at home. I had written a fairly extensive howto in the Installing with Fake RAID wiki page after my first multiple fake raid set install last fall so I went back to use it as a reference of the install last night. I was surprised how terse the information was and how little of the original step by step instructions remained. It was actually confusing enough that I went back to the original for a reference. If it was confusing for me to use as a reference and I know how to do this having done at least a dozen, I can imagine how it would hit a first timer. Don't get me wrong, the core information is still there, but it doesn't logically flow through the install. It's like nothing connects the dots... We might want to take another look at making the page flow a little better and expand a sentence or two on each step from the point of Partitioning Your Drive -> choosing other, to Installing Grub. Another 3-4 sentences in that area would really help. I don't mind doing it, but I don't want to do it again just to have it erased again. So is there someone we can send the additions to so they can add it 'officially' rather then me adding it and having it erased again? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I know that the password "$PASSWORD" is not very secure (since the pass is visible in "ps ax"), but on a single user system it mostly doesn't matter. There are alternatives to that too: 1. put the password in /etc/ppp/pap-secrets and chap-secrets 2. use the "passwordfd" plugin for pppd and write the password to a specific fd 3. use the "passprompt" plugin and only enter the password on the terminal when you start pppd - no need to store the pass ever -- damjan

Hi all, I installed arch 64-bit on my t61 this weekend, and when I try to run midori or epiphany, and some other apps as well, I get midori[16445]: segfault at 8 ip 00007f0d1093d963 sp 00007fffb6e8a1e0 error 4 in ld-2.11.1.so[7f0d10933000+1e000] and epiphany[16664]: segfault at 8 ip 00007fbe5670e963 sp 00007fffff76fc10 error 4 in ld-2.11.1.so[7fbe56704000+1e000] By doing pacman -Qo /lib/ld-2.11.1.so, I get glibc, which is at version 2.11.1-1. I've tried doing pacman -Syu, but that hasn't resolved anything. I some how think this isn't a bug, but something I'm doing wrong on my end. Any pointers on how to trouble shoot this? As a final note, heres uname -a: Linux turnstile 2.6.32-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 9 15:12:10 CET 2010 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux Of course, any other info is also available, just let me know what might be needed. So I'm not sure if cpio must be kept in the base group but it should stay in [core]. And cryptsetup definitely needs to stay in [core] and in the base group because this is needed for encrypting hard disks, which is supported by AIF anyway. And cryptsetup is needed at boot time and during the installation from the LiveCDs. This is an essential tool which mustn't be removed from the base group and from [core]. And I'm not sure if cracklib should be removed from [core]. If it's moved to [extra] then this may be an option. Greetings, Heiko

Hi all, I have a Microsoft keyboard (*hides*) and some of its multimedia keys don't work (most of them do, though), as in "they don't show any keycode on 'xev' or 'showkey'". I don't really think I'll get them to work, but I'll ask anyway: is there any hack to make them work? It's a Digital Media 3000 if it makes any difference. TIA

Hey, Maybe I'm just not understanding how Arch works, so please forgive my ignorance. I come from ubuntu, and there you get development headers for most packages by following the naming convention, which is package-dev. A quick apt-cache search package | grep dev would yield the right package. Now, I'm trying to obtain these on my fresh arch, but can't seem to find anything through pacman search or google. Anyone could hint me in the right direction? If it's useful, I need the dev headers for sqlite3.

Hello all, Over the past 3 months I've installed Arch on five different machines: an IBM R51, a Fujitsu-Siemens W360, my home machine which has no pedigree, an EEE-1000H and an today an EEE-904HA. Apart from one major panic related to the libpng14 update there have not been any significant problems, and the ones that emerged have been solved by prompt feedback on this list or by the information provided on the Wiki. Five more W360 are to follow soon. All this merits a big thanks to the developers and maintainers of Arch, and to all those who have kindly provided help. I don't think I could have had the same results (in all cases a setup *very* close to what was required) as easily from any other distro. One of my next projects will require touchscreens for a 'kiosk' type of application, and I'm still trying to find the right hardware. Hello all, Trying to translate some of the entries in /etc/X11/xdm/archlinux/Xresources to Italian I get strange results. Xlogin*greeting:Benvenuti to Salome works OK. But Xlogin*namePrompt:Nome d'utente\040: Xlogin*passwdPrompt:Parola d'ordine\040: just give me the defaults. I tried replacing all spaces with \040, same result. I also tried enclosing the text in double quotes, but then the quotes are printed as well. So what is the correct syntax ? Another strange thing is that on this system a failed login does not display the 'Incorrect' message but restarts xdm immediately. hi i've bought a new notebook (hp pavilion dm1-1150sl) and installed archlinux. i have see a strange thing with powertop, i'm running the vanilla arch kernel26, and i have see this behaviour: Cn Avg residency P-states (frequencies) C0 (cpu occupata) (31,6%) C0 0,0ms ( 0,0%) C1 mwait 0,1ms ( 0,7%) C4 mwait 0,0ms (67,8%) Wakeups-from-idle per second : 31483,5 interval: 10,0s --- as you can see, i have a LOT of wakeups per seconds very low c1 states lot of c0 and c4 states, a wattmeter tell me that archlinux consume about 25/26watt Then i have boot a live ubuntu distro and see this: Cn permanenza media P-state (frequenze) C0 (cpu occupata) ( 0,6%) polling 0,0 ms ( 0,0%) C1 mwait 26,7 ms (68,6%) C4 mwait 1,2 ms (30,8%) Wakeup-da-idle al secondo: 281,3 intervallo: 15,0s --- as you can see the wakeups are a LOT lower than on arch and we have lot of c1 and c4 state, power consumption is about 20W, the same that i have with win7 (about 18/20w). Guys, if any of you are subscribed to planet arch, then you must have noticed a problem with some of the feeds. The problem is, the summary of the feed displays fine, but when i open the feed, it shows the xml of the feed instead of showing the website. http://planet.archlinux.org/atom.xml (this is shown). This happens with only a few of the feeds. Recently happened with these feeds: Arch Haskell News: February 2010, Archiso-live 20100217 Release. I am using firefox with newsfox. [arch-general] Xscreensaver corrupts ext4 / partition

Hi all, I have 4 boxes, all with the same partitioning scheme and using ext4 for all of them. This weird thing has only showed up in one of them. Some time back while playing some video and with xscreensaver active, the timeout for xscreensaver expired and then password was required... Bad thing that xscreensaver corrupted / so that it couldn't be unlocked, and under console there was no way to loging, some misplaced inodes or something... Hard reboot was required, and then at first /tmp was so corrupted that it was necessary a phisical fix... After all that, what happens is that whenever launching xscreensaver-demo, if I had a terminal open then doing cat, or any other thing fails, since no libraries are found... If at that moment I go to console, the message I get is ext4 /dev/sda7 (partition for /) is corrupted with some inode misplacement or similar... Then at that time there's nothing else to do but to hard reset... BTW, when loading xscreensaver-demo from terminal, the 1st thing that shows up is: (xscreensaver-demo:2830): libglade-WARNING **: Could not load support for `gnome': libgnome.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I think that is due exactly for the same thing, that ext4 got corrupted, since by doing cat or any other command shows that libraries are not found or something... Has anyone seen this? Any way to get xscreensaver working back? It was actually working before, and it is working on all other boxes. Weird thing is that without xscreensaver I don't get any problem, so my work around right now is not to use it. I initially got under the impression that the ext4 corruption wa sdue to something else, so I re-installed all packages, but that didn't help (got list of packages, and install them all through pacman -S)... If this is known and there's way to overcome it, other than just not using xscreesaver at all, please let me know... Thanks, -- Javier.

Hi, I've two problems with ifplugd and net-auto-wired. When ifplugd is started during boot my speakers make a weird and very loud "moep" sound. When started from a console after boot no such sound occurs. The second problem I have is if net-auto-wired starts during boot time it will not detect any networks. Hi all, Previously I was having the following settings: /etc/default/grub ---------------------- GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='resume=/dev/sda5' grub.cfg ----------- linux /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda7 ro resume=/dev/sda5 I have installed: acpitool 0.5.1-1 kernel26 2.6.32.8-1 And fro quiet a long time I've been using the kernel suspend feature through acpitool, so in order to suspend I've always done: acpitool -S As of now, it seems storing the state into the swap area is working. Problem is that when booting, the kernel is not even trying to see if there's state stored in the swap, since I don't see any message about it, and all I'm getting is plain boot. So I suspect the kernel is not compiled with built in support for suspend to disk. Is this true? Thanks, -- Javier.

Hi gyus, i got a problem...(do not know how/when did it started though). (I use pcmanfm as a file manager, and yes i have ck-launch-session in my .xinitrc) The strange thing is that all of them can be mounted under Windows XP SP3...so it's not a hardware problem. Looked through Archlinux forums, but found nothing that i could use... Any clues? P.S.1 : Most of the CDs are bootable ones, writen with "cdrecord -v speed=8 dev=/dev/scd0 -data -tao -multi". Hello all, I'm installing Arch on an EEE. Following the wiki, I installed from a core image which hase 2.6.30, blocked its update, and then updated all the rest. Starting X I get this: (EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected. Does this mean I'll need 2.6.32 anyway (and hence no Wifi) or are there other solutions ? Hello all, A few days ago I installed Arch on an EEE-1000H. Things work very well and I'm sort of impressed by how easy it worked out to be (there were a few hickups but nothing serious). Today I discovered one possible problem. The key combination 'Fn + F2' enables or disables the wireless network device. If you hit it accidentally there's no more wifi. Using netcfg (I'm using the version from testing) doesn't bring it back, as the wlan0 device doesn't exist. The solution is hitting again 'Fn + F2', then netcfg the wireless profile. No big deal for me, but the end users of this machine are less technically inclined. So I'm looking for either - a way to disable the action of this key combination (while leaving the other F-keys intact), or - a way to re-enable the wireless device from a script. The trick mentioned on the EEE-901 wiki echo 1 > /sys/......./wlan0 doesn't work - there's no such file on the 1000H Any hints will be appreciated ! Ciao, -- FA O tu, che porte, correndo si ? netcfg v2.5.2 This release brings a completely new auto wireless/wired configuration. The old net-auto is deprecated and no longer included. There are also some very minor configuration changes that may affect a few people. Move to new auto-wireless/wired The new automatic connection has proper roaming support and will prove more reliable than the old setup - particularly with more complicated wireless configurations. To migrate to the new automatic wireless setup: 1. pacman -S testing/wpa_actiond 2. Set WIRELESS_INTERFACE="" to your wireless interface in /etc/rc.conf. For example WIRELESS_INTERFACE="wlan0" 3. Add net-auto-wireless to your DAEMONS=() array. Note: wpa-config profiles do not work with this, convert them to wpa-configsection profiles. An example is included in /etc/network.d/examples/ The new auto-wired uses similar configuration - follow the above instructions except use the net-auto-wired daemon, and WIRED_INTERFACE configuration option. New features: - net-auto-wireless/wpa_actiond - Real wireless roaming/auto connection. Based on same principle as autowifi. Requires optional dependency: wpa_actiond - net-auto-wired - automatic ethernet configuration. Requires optional dependency: ifplugd - Interface configurations - set options for all profiles using an interface - Output hooks - Internal cleanup & improvement Internal changes: - Uses wpa_supplicant for all wireless configuration by default, including wep/none security. This adds improves support for most and should improve reliability. - Uses iproute by default for all static configuration. net_tools which contains ifconfig is effectively obsolete and hasnt seen a release for over 8 years. The 'ethernet-iproute' and 'ethernet' connection types have been merged together to simply 'ethernet'. All options are still supported and existing configurations will continue to work for both types. A symlink has been made to ensure that profiles using 'ethernet-iproute' will continue to function. Changes in configuration syntax - net-auto and AUTO_NETWORKS is now deprecated in favour of net-auto-wireless/net-auto-wired. - wireless: If you were previously specifying the wpa_supplicant driver in WPA_OPTS, you now need to specify it in WPA_DRIVER. - wireless: iwconfig based configuration for wep/none can be used by changing to wep-old or none-old. This should not be necessary and is left in place only for the possibility of very old drivers that do not support wpa_supplicant. - ethernet-iproute: As 'ethernet' is now iproute based, those using 'ethernet-iproute' can revert the name. There is a symlink in place, so existing configurations of either name will continue to function regardless. - wireless-dbus: Unsupported. The wpa_supplicant dbus interface isn't particularly well documented and it doesn't fit well into the netcfg codebase. It may so happen that one wants to know what's wrong with some configuration, but it is handled at boot time and the initscripts don't provide enough info. An alternative is to use the hook functions scattered about the initscripts, which may or may not be better for your needs. This is my trick to have certain scripts set to bash's trace mode and leave output in a file. It needs one configuration line in etc/rc.conf and a file in etc/rc.d/functions.d/: Example: # /etc/rc.conf - Main Configuration for Arch Linux ... only_info_pls="*@(/network|/iptables)*:::/root/system/boot/questions/!0-!1-!2.txt" ... This will "trigger" when the name of the script executed matches either */network* or */iptables*, set them to trace mode "-x" and collect their output in files named after the script's name, with "/" replaced by ":". Each of "!0", "!1" .. "!5" undergo this substitution. "5" are expanded with the appropriate script arguments, and directory separators are replaced with colons. etc/rc.d/functions.d/only_info_pls.sh is too small to make anything more than this post of it, but it proved very useful so far. Dear colleagues, Linux Verification Center at the Institute for System Programming of RAS and the Linux Foundation have released a free unit test generator for shared C/C++ library API. It helps to quickly generate simple ("sanity" or "shallow"-quality) tests for all functions from the library API using their signatures and data type definitions straight from the library header files. The quality of generated tests allows to check absence of critical errors in simple use cases and can be improved by involving of highly reusable specialized types for the library. This tool can execute generated tests and detect all kinds of emitted signals, early program exits, program hanging and specified requirement failures. It can be considered as a tool for low-cost sanity checking of library API or as a powerful test development framework. Also it supports universal Template2Code format of tests, random test generation mode and other useful features. This tool is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU GPLv2. We suppose this tool can be very useful for shared library developers and recommend it for including to Arch Linux. So it looks like an annoying "feature" got added to a recent upgrade to KDE4. (Maybe in the recent 4.4 beta?) When using Konqueror as a file manager, apparently there's some new subversion integration - which is getting enabled by default. If you go into "konqueror --profile filemanagement" and click on an svn working directory, konqueror automatically displays the svn status using icons, and automatically performs an "svn update" when you enter the directory. Anyone know how to disable this "feature"? Thanks, DR

Whenever I mount it via KDE4.4's Auto-mounter. it sets all files to be owned by root. $ ls -la /media/Backup/ total 24 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Feb 10 16:07 . drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Feb 10 17:30 .. drwx------ 2 root root 16384 Feb 10 16:07 lost+found I know KDE does not mount anything, it asks HAL. nothing is in /etc/fstab but in /etc/mtab and in /proc/mount I got $ cat /etc/mtab /dev/sdb1 /media/Backup ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal 0 0 $ cat /etc/proc /dev/sdb1 /media/Backup ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 This means I can't write/modify anything as a normal user. mounting manually every-time I need to transfer few files is annoying.HAL mounts drives by default only for root user. It'll be up to him how to package this, but this prompts a more general question I have. Granted that daemon scripts are not supposed to be modified by the ordinary user; the /etc/conf.d mechanism is the usual way to supply arguments to the daemon scripts. However, it's one thing to say "not usually supposed to be user-modified" and slightly different to say "overwrites user mods without notice." I find myself tweaking a few /etc/rc.d scripts now and then. I know there's an existing mechanism to protect such changes: NoUpgrade in /etc/pacman.conf. But I wondered why more PKGBUILDs didn't just add the daemons to the backup array. So the question is: should we think of it as _policy_ that rc.d scripts don't go in backup array, and should instead always be explicitly protected by the user if user wants to mod? No problem if so, it's actually helpful to know there's an explicit policy to always do it the one way or always do it the other way. As to dcron 4.2, I've already gotten some feedback. Thanks. Having a weird problem in the latest firefox, and was wondering if anyone is seeing anything similar. (And/or know cause/workaround.) When I shut down FF and start it again, the new FF window is a smaller size than the old one. But it's not just that it's not remembering the correct settings - it's actually doing something more devious than that: Even if I manually set the height in the localstore.rdf file (or delete the localstore and let FF re-create it) FF is *overriding* the height value in that file - with a value of 900. Now that value is too round a number to be a coincidence - and it's not. Apparently, it's taking the height from the *smaller* of the 2 screens I have connected to my laptop (the internal panel - 1440x900). But I tweaked my nvidia settings a long time ago specifically to avoid this issue, and they've been working properly with FF ever since (i.e., setting window at correct size) - up until the recent FF/xulrunner upgrade, that is. My nvidia xorg settings are as follows: Option "TwinView" "on" Option "TwinViewOrientation" "Clone" Option "MetaModes" "nvidia-auto-select, nvidia-auto-select" Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "nvidia-auto-select" EndSubsection Option "TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder" "DFP-2, DFP-0" DFP-2 is my external monitor (1680x1050), and DFP-0 is my laptop internal panel. I haven't been able to find much mention about this issue - either on the Arch boards, or elsewhere on the Net. Hi, Recently I'm facing a funny problem. pacman (and even packer) is toooo slow to search -Ss (db+aur) or -Qs (db). I see a lot of HDD activity going on. I updated to udev, cryptsetup and device mapper from testing the installed kernel 2.6.32.6 and rebooted. now /dev/mapper/root and /dev/dm-0 are not there but /etc/mtab mentions /dev/mapper/root /dev/mapper/home and /dev/dm-1 exist The computer boots till the fsck part then stops because there is no /dev/mapper/root to fsck. I'm trying not to touch any libpng/libjpeg stuff in testing but non of those messes up booting anyway. After fsck fails, it dropped me to a shell. I downgraded udev and device-mapper, recreated the kernel image and I can boot now. Any ideas?

Okay, this is it. The busybox-based mkinitcpio is entering testing now. BACK UP YOUR OLD (WORKING) INITRAMFS (kernel26.img) FILE! Also, do NOT use this if you have root on NFS, it is NOT IMPLEMENTED yet. Known issues: If you use 2.6.33 and enable the support for ext2/ext3 in the ext4 driver, root on ext2/3 won't work with the autodetect hook, I'll fix that for the next version. Number of systems that failed to boot after the upgrade: 0 (so far) Hooks adjusted: All base hooks + keymap, encrypt, lvm2, mdadm, dmraid, raid (now a symlink to mdadm), v86d. (Also, I hear that the uresume hook works without modification). I am still looking for someone to implement NFS root with this, please contact me if you are interested. This will not be the final version, there is still some work to do, but for now this requires more testing.

I spoke to Jörg by phone at first to explain my role, and then by email. I reminded him in doing so that I had agreed with him about the acceptability of combining GPL'd code with a C-library under CDDL in order to make the Debian/GNU/OpenSolaris stack called Nexenta. (I believe this part of our conversation is the source of Jörg's mistaken statement that I somehow indicated that cdrtools is non-infringing, although the issue of the "system library exception" in GPLv2 is completely distinct from the problem presented by the CDDL-licensed libraries libscg and libschilly combined with GPL'd mkisofs in cdrtools.) After speaking to Jörg we began our review of the complete source of cdrtools, and soon verified that GPL compliance on mkisofs was broken. We told Jörg that as far as we could see he was the only copyright holder on the CDDL'd libraries, which he confirmed. In that case, I pointed out, he could give all the permission necessary to solve the problem, without any license changes: he simply needed to give permission as the relevant copyright holder on the CDDL's libraries for combination with mkisofs and distribution of the binary and source under the terms of GPL, without any additional restrictions. We drafted for him the thirty-nine words needed: "You are permitted to link or otherwise combine this library with the program mkisofs, which is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). If You do, you may distribute the combined work under the terms of the GPL." Jörg disputed our analysis. He argued to us: (1) that the binary mkisofs is not derivative of the CDDL-licensed libraries because it merely links to them; and alternatively that (2) CDDL Section 3.6 ("Larger Works") permits the combination. He claimed to have German legal advice confirming him on point (1), but without regard to his German legal analysis, which differs from that of our German lawyers, the argument is incorrect as a matter of law, at least in the United States, and GPL'd mkisofs (whose copyright is at stake) is a US work to which US copyright law applies under the Berne Convention. As to his point (2), while CDDL Section 3.6 permits combination with code under other licenses, it nonetheless requires that "the requirements of this License are fulfilled for the [combined program]." Since it is impossible to observe certain requirements of the CDDL while simultaneously respecting the GPL's prohibition of additional restrictions (GPLv2 Section 6), the CDDL Section 3.6 permission is insufficient to allow the combination. Hence the permission we advised him to grant. Though Jörg continued to argue that he didn't *need* to grant the permission, he never explained why, in the face of opposing legal analysis on behalf of the copyright holders of mkisofs he didn't *want* to grant a harmless permission that would allow his work to be included in Canonical's Ubuntu distributions. After weeks of discussion and many hours of my time and the time of my associate Aaron Williamson, Mark Shuttleworth decided there was no point in further fruitless negotiation and I agreed. SFLC was not paid for its work by any party.

Hello all, Today I installed Latex (texlive). Doing this installed new versions of libpng and libjpeg, and this broke emacs, xv and gnuplot (and maybe others I haven't discovered yet). I was able to make xv work again by removing and re-installing it. This didn't help for emacs, but adding a symbolic link in /usr/lib (to the wrong library !!!) made it work again. But I've been unable to get gnuplot working again, and this is one of my most essential tools. So what's the Arch way to solve this ? I find it extremely strange that updating a library removes the original - never seen this on any other distro. Nor is there any need to do this. Ciao, -- FA O tu, che porte, correndo si ? The shutdown script was written without thinking the diskless machine. It try to bring down the network and to do more works to clean the machine. But in diskless system, if the network is bring down, the rootfs can not be accessed anymore, so the shuting down process will dead .............. I'll fill a bug report on the archlinux.org

I know the whitespace patch should technically be separate but I had such a hard time reading db-move when I was editing it that I had to include it for my own sanity. Guys, After the kde44beta install, I first notices increased fan noise every 10 minutes or so that lasts for about 4-5 minutes, then things would go back to normal. At first I just thought it was strigi catching up or so, but after a full day the CPU was still getting pegged. Looking at the processes, it is 'virtuoso -t' that is to blame. I noticed today when doing a system upgrade via Pacman, it wanted to upgrade my kernel and install 'kernel26-2.6.32.7-1' however I wanted to know how this version differs from my current version kernel. When I run 'uname -r' command, I just get "2.6.32-ARCH". Can someone please tell me how I can find my exact kernel version & lastly - what happens to the old kernel? Does it get removed?

So I've been having a strange problem on my computer with updates. The xulrunner package in the official repos didn't want to update because firefox-branded (from the AUR) depends on an old version, but firefox-branded won't update because it needs a newer version of xulrunner. I got it to work by removing firefox-branded, updating, then installing it again, but it's a complicated solution and entirely not obvious what's going wrong. Guys, I never thought red and gold would work on a kde4 desktop, but I think it looks great. While I figure out how to package them and where to put them, I could use some feedback on whether they need any more work. Below are links to the RedGold theme, a background to go with it, and an emerald theme as well. All three of the gold themes (BlackGold, DeepBlueGold, DarkRedGold), work best with either Nitrogen, Ozone or Oxygen 'window & style' decorations. Bespin works very well as a window decoration for all three, but the Bespin 'style' is very finicky with the Red for some reason. If you use a 'style' other than Ozone, Nitrogen, Oxygen or Bespin, your theme color will look black instead of Red or Blue due to how faint the colors are in the color definition. For the best results, 'uncheck' the option to blend the title bar with theme colors in the Appearance -> Window system settings. The charcoal titlebar works well into the theme. You can also use Crystal, Modern, Laptop or Glow window decorations and they will look pretty good as well. Hi, I was trying to configure compiz and kde, when I ran fusion-icon on the terminal, it told me that /usr/lib/compiz/libpng.so.14 could not be loaded as required by compiz. But I found /usr/lib/compiz/libpng.so and symlinked to libpng.so.14 that fixed the problem. But is this a bug to be reported ?? Hi, I'd recently updated php, mysql, and php-apache packages to following versions: php 5.3.1-4 mysql 5.1.43-1 php-apache 5.3.1-4 After update my existing webapps started showing error: Unable to connect to database, with nothing changed on the webapps side. After assuming that recent update cause them to break, I downgraded all related packages, and then upgraded them one-by-one. Following is the final combination which worked for me: php 5.3.1-4 mysql 5.1.43-1 php-apache 5.3.1-3 If anyone also exhibits this behaviour, then I can report this as bug. [arch-general] Mounting tmpfs on /dev. Why?

Hi there. I'm newbie in Archlinux and I have another lame question. Recently, I've found that Arch mounts tmpfs on /dev. And, as you may see, this makes big problem to some applications. I see: "none on /dev type tmpfs" in the output of mount program. This mount is not placed in /etc/fstab. So, I think this is done by some of init scripts. I've looked at the /etc/rc.d folder and grep "mount" `find`. But nothing interesting found. I really don't want to mount tmpfs on /dev. How to don't do it? Thanks for patience.

[arch-general] Video Resolution, Grub2 and Kernel 2.6.32

When I installed grub2 a short while back, I was using the kernel 2.6.31.6 and I enjoyed a full screen of 1024.768 32K color depth. I followed the steps outlined here <http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB2#Setting_the_framebuffer_resolution> to the letter and all was great. But when the kernel26 package upgraded to 2.6.32.2, This functionality broke. I ended up having to remove the video related stuff from my grub line to get my system to boot. When I say this didn't work anymore, basically my system wouldn't boot and I end up with a blank screen showing. When I experimented by removing the insmod statement and using vga=790 by itself, the best I get is a 30 line display with 80 columns width. Anyone know what changed? It would appear that we may need to update the wiki page with new info for grub2 and video resolution.

I noticed that when I login to my new Arch server & attempt to use commands like 'ls' or 'ls -l', I have no color. It's just white text so it's hard to visually differentiate the difference between files and directories. I did read the Wiki below which advises me to modify my ~/.bashrc which comes from /etc/skel/.bashrc however when I am logged in as root, I want to have this colored output feature. I checked and my /root directory has no .bashrc file. When I attempt to create one & add the parameters I have in my ~/.bashrc, I then log out and log back in as root but still have no color. How do I make this system wide? Devs, I don't know whether this is something Arch can set or if it is kde that sets the powerdevil suspend default. We need to see if it is possible to disable the 'suspend' after 30 minutes on the first page of the powerdevil settings because many machines (mine included) do not suspend nicely and instead lock up tight. It took a while to find this issue on my x86_64 box, but after setting the default to 'Turn off Screen' instead of suspend, the lockups are gone. When the suspend lockups occurred, my box locked so badly I had to pull the power-cord and drain the residual power by depressing the 'on' button with the cord out before the box would POST again. That's a serious lock.... If possible, we may want to try and disable this default even if it is a kde default because it has some pretty bad implications.... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I'm regularly connecting and disconnecting to a VPN using vpnc. The network I connect to has a transparent proxy which I want to set $http_proxy to. I thought I could do something like export http_proxy="proxy.whatever.com" in the /etc/rc.d/vpnc file, in the start and stop functions as necessary but exporting only makes the variable available to the child processes. Not to mention, I need this variable set for normal users also. Basically, I want to set and unset the variable when I connect and disconnect the VPN. Any ideas?

Guys, I have several good collections of miscellaneous kde themes, kdm/gdm themes, metacity, gtk-2, xcursors, etc.. that I would like to find how best to contribute them to the community. The color-schemes, gnome and kde layout are original and the are available from gnome-look, kde-look, etc. (all GPL), but given all the 3rd party redirection that those sites put you through to find any given file, it is almost not worth downloading them anymore one-at-a-time (same applies to many of the other 'now commercialized' sites). If this is something that you guys may be interested in, my main question is I don't know whether it would be better to put them together as several AUR package, ABS package or whether Arch has a place for this type of stuff. I generally just make them available on my server at 3111skyline.com, but I'm limited to 384k upstream so putting a bunch of material out for community wide download can result in logjams. The idea here is to just make it convenient for Arch users to have a convenient couple of packages to install to get a good cross-section of some of the better desktop packages themes, cursors, etc.. that are a real pain to go search for, find and download separately. Arch devs, is this something that you guys would be interested in? If so, what do you think is the best way to do it? There is probably no more than 50M total. Guys, The far right-hand sliver of the screen is rarely covered on my desktop. Using the quicklaunch widget turns it into a very useful launch area without placing an entire 'toolbar' on the edge by using the 'quicklaunch' widget. Using the quicklaunch, you can put ~20 of your favorite apps in a very convenient location without losing desktop real estate. Simply using the resize handle, you can resize it into a vertical configuration. Right after resize, the whole quicklaunch will look like a mess due to a bug that changes the size of the icons to 128px as the widget is resized vertically. Just click on the preferences access button and set the size back to 16 and you are good to go. (while you are there also increase the maximum number of visible apps to ~30 or so) To populate quicklaunch, just right-click the quicklaunch on the icon above where you want your app located and navigate to the .desktop file for the app you want to add and click OK. The .desktop files are usually located at: /usr/share/applications /opt/kde(3)/share/applications/kde (adjust as required) /usr/share/applications/kde4 To rearrange the application order, just drag the icons where you want them in the quicklaunch. I really like Arch. I switched about a year ago after being a Debian user for nine years. There is something that troubles me though about Arch. Its lack of security focus. By this I mean there is no consistent way that security issues are dealt with. There was a proposal for 'The Arch Linux Security Team' but it seems to have fallen by the wayside[1]. I propose to resurrect this in the spirit of Arch's users becoming contributors. I, hopefully not alone wish to draw up a list of processes that can be used to create a dedicated Arch Linux security team that can deal quickly and efficiently with security alerts. It would need to be able to liaise successfully with Arch developers and hopefully over time security team members can become trusted users. I'm mentioning it now as I notice that an Arch Conference is being organised in Canada. One of my proposals (shamefully stolen from Debian) would be to have key-signing parties at Arch Linux meet-ups. This could then be used to create an Arch Linux web of trust. So basically I'm going to get my ideas into writing and post them on this list. I hope others will be willing to come forward and contribute too. Wow, this thread got very hot very fast. I composed this about an hour ago, when things were much cooler. But the questions still seem worth raising. I understand Joerg's frustration about the burden of proof issue here, and I also understand Allan's and Phrakture's reluctance, in the light of our not having more solid evidence from disinterested parties. Apparently Joerg has seen more such evidence, but is not in a position to provide it. That's unfortunate, but understandable. People are getting alternately enthusiastic, and frustrated, and annoyed with each other, but that seems to be about where this stands. Aren't there two questions here, though? 1. Should we distribute binaries of cdrtools? 2. Should we distribute binaries of cdrkit? Setting 1 aside for the moment, it sounds to me---not based wholly on this thread, but this thread exhausts my recent reading on the issue---like there are possible legal issues with 2, and in fact it sounds to me like the case for that is rather stronger than the case for there being legal issues with 1. That impression survives even if the case against cdrkit does all trace back to claims made by Joerg---which I don't know to be so but which has been alleged here. There are technical reasons for thinking cdrtools is much preferable to cdrkit; however that leaves it open whether cdrkit is or isn't good enough for the needs that prompt us to distribute a binary of either of these packages. As I said I do understand the reasons given for hesitating about cdrtools. But it sounds to me like cdrkit survives equally careful scrutiny less well. So why isn't the decision tree: be most cautious legally, and distribute neither be moderately cautious legally, in which case although it's not obvious cdrtools is in the clear, the case against cdrkit seems stronger, so if one is to be distributed it should be cdrtools trust other distros, and decide we're clear to distribute either, in which case the technical merits again speak for cdrtools. -- Jim Pryor jim(a)jimpryor.net

I have Gnome Desktop Environment up and running perfect on my Arch x86_64 system but I elected to not install "gnome-extra" packages because it installs too much junk I don't want and or need. My question is I am missing two applications from Gnome and don't know what they're called and or what to search for. 1st - I can't open any JPEG or PNG images because Gnome does not appear to have the proper application to manage displaying those types of files. Can someone tell me what the name of the package is Gnome uses for default image viewing? I don't want Gimp for editing images, just to plainly view them. 2nd - I need the ability to RDP into a Windows XP workstation and I installed "rdesktop" packages via Pacman but I think that is the back end package and I am looking for the Gnome GUI application which allows me to do so. I don't know the name of that package. Can anyone please point me in the correct direction?

.... I am new to the list, used Linux since Caldera 2.2. I noticed references to a kernel-lts, labelled as 'long-time-support' on the Arch website. I did a bit of googling & noticed references to such from Arch & Ubuntu forums. I found no references at kernel.org, although I noticed that they listed an upgrade to kernel 2.6.27.45, same number as the '-lts' kernel in Arch. Is the 'lts' kernel project Arch/Ubuntu-specific, or (semi-?) supported from kernel.org ? Also, I noticed that the bleeding edge kernels (seem to) include firmware packages, but I didn't see them for the lts kernels, did I just miss them or are they absent from the 'lts' series of kernels ? The topic says it all. I've got a new microphone, and whereas it works, it's rather quiet when I try to record it wtih audacity. Most people on skype complain that my voice is rather quiet as well, and I have to basically put the mic in my mouth for them to hear to hear me properly. Nothing's showed up on dmesg since I've plugged it in, strangely, but it shows up as a selection in audacity and skype (AK5370 :USB Audio (hw:1,0)). I've got mic boost, capture volume, capture 1, and digital turned all the way up, and those seem to be the only relevant options in alsamixer. Guys, After updates today on my x86_64 box from testing, including kernel26-2.6.32.6-1, Compiz is broken. It attempts to start, but then all windows are left without any decorations and keyboard input is disabled on kde4. The first time I tried, the plasma panel died leaving me with no way to get kwin back other than finding a black spot on the desktop and logging out. Next attempt, plasma panel stayed with me and changing back and forth from kwin to compiz and back is easily done with fusion-icon. (I put a shortcut on my desktop to 'kwin --replace &' just in case) Dunno what is happening here. Hello, During the recent libpng/libjpeg rebuilds, one thing that I noticed is that (big) Todo lists are really slow to load. Turns out that the current code is doing tons of simple queries (4 per package) which, although are quick to execute on the database server, take a considerable ammount of time to make. Thankfully, Django provides a mechanism to fetch all needed data in one go, which proved to be much faster during my testing. :) (If I should be sending these to a developer instead of this mailing list, please let me know.)

Just some words from my point of view: Like some of you guys - most of you I guess.. - I don't really like Jörg's way to articulate. He has his arguments, which are really good ones, but it always becomes a discussion like this. I saw this in the german Ubuntu forums, before I switched to Archlinux. But he really makes me feel like he loves his software and wants to maintain it as active as possible, so it always stays free of known bugs and is as well written as he is able to. I'm no real coder, so I cannot confirm that, but I trust him in this point. Maybe we deal here with a guy, who isn't really good in expressing himself in writing. I have this problem as well, I'm a much better talker than writer, when I write stuff, people often misunderstand me. Maybe it's the same with Jörg (although his english is VERY good!). But is this really an argument wether to use someone's software or not? I mean, for example, many people think RMS is a real idiot, but still they use his utils, because they are good software. There could be thousands of other examples. Are the devs of Firefox nice guys? Who gives a shit about that? Nobody, right, because nobody needs to talk to them about such issues Jörg always has to discuss about. What I want to say is, don't focus on Jörg's writing style or the way he articulates, focus on the software and the license issues. And Jörg, PLEASE do yourself a favor and stay on topic, the people here want to be sure if it's legal to use your software, so provide every information you are able to provide and don't always just write stuff like "I have a personal email of ..." (too lazy right now to find your exact quote, this thread is very long already ;-) ) You want Arch to use cdrtools in its official repos? So do what has to be done. If Allan, a VERY important Arch Dev, wants something specific, you should provide everything you can. It doesn't help you at all to play a little crybaby with this whole "They stole my software" (again, no real quote) etc. I'd love to see cdrtools in Arch, simply because it's really superior to cdrkit. If it's illegal to provide it in the repos, we still have the AUR, but the repos are official, the AUR is not, so if it's possible, having it in the repos would be preferable. I cannot find the "cf" variant in the ca layout (canadian french) in /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.lst. What happened with it? I am trying to use a USB keyboard on my laptop, however it gets set as US instead of ca-cf. I check the file 10-keymap.fdi in /etc/hal/fdi/policy, but when I put ca as layout and cf as variant, my keyboard does not respond when I plug it in. Any other layout (that exists) works. They keys have already mapped and few of them work too. "Play" does play/pause in amarok. However few keys do not work. I want to map these these to do some actions. like I want the calc hotkey to launch a application speedcrunch. I think this has something to with Khotkeys configration, But I haven't been able to figure out how exactly to configure khotkeys due to lack of documentation. I have a little dell 10 with archlinux. Unfortunately the audio and 3d are not really working, I tried hard some time ago but with no luck, anyway other problems are more annoying. - time getting crazy Every time I reboot this little machine the date is set somehow randomly. Any idea of what could that be? Maybe the battery that should keep it up is not working (I think is an OS issue though)?? - screensaver I use xfce but I installed quite a lot of stuff from gnome, but I never asked for the stupid gnome-screensaver to start at every boot, and I don't find how to disable it. This also happens with normal reboots. - no packages to update This is quite strange, sometimes I do a "pacman -Suy" and I loop up to date, but if I change the first mirror just editing mirrorlist I'm not up to date anymore and it starts updating. What does that mean? Not all the mirrors are on sync? Could it be related somehow to my problem with the date (shouldn't be though)?

[arch-general] Laptop reboots instead of resume from suspend

I'm using an Inspiron 1720, GeForce 8600M GT, Arch i686. If I update to any kernel after 2.6.31.6-1 then the laptop reboots from suspend or hibernate. According to pm-suspend.log the suspend was fine and there are n problems in the other logs. It just reboots. Anyone else seen this, or any suggestions for a fix? -- Dave.

[arch-general] An old, tiresome discussion: cdrtools vs cdrkit

I know this is a going to be a probably tiresome discussion revived but I'd like to get this over with. I've been meaning to do it for a while now. My issue is that the cdrtools substitute cdrkit that Arch currently officially provides is not actively developed (current to last stable was around a year) and is technically inferior to cdrtools. cdrkit still does not generate proper iso-level-3 file systems and has trouble with big file support. This makes proper blu-ray creation hard. My upstream bug report on their mailing list was completely ignored, for example [1]. I request using the original cdrtools in place of cdrkit. I know that it actually was that way once but it was changed due to uncertainty about licensing issues. It appears that these issues are now solved with the conclusion that there are non while cdrkit is actually the offender. I'm aware that I can get cdrtools from AUR. Even then, cdrkit uses "replaces" and that spells "don't use cdrtools" for me. We should not be using broken software in Arch when there are better alternatives available just because of FUD about the licensing. Let the fight begin.
