[arch-general] New to Arch with problems with AUR

Hi list ! First i present myself. My name is Mario and i was reading this list for a few weeks. I'm coming from Debian, and i have to say that Arch was the first distro that replaced it in my computer. Arch rocks, it gives a really updated and stable kde desktop. Yes, it's a little hard to configure, but one can learn with it. And the AUR system was one of the main reasons for me to change. I was trying to install some programs from AUR, and it worked in some cases. But in many other cases, the programs do not compile. And i talk about programs with so much votes. For instance, i couldn't compile shaman. Actually i can't compile aqpm or libaqpm, wich is a dependency of shaman, and it isn't in the pacman repositories. So, in general, how must i face these problems ? Do i have to post errors in the AUR pages ? Is it always so common to have problems in building AUR packages ? By the way, i will stay with Arch. I like it's descentralized package philosophy. Thank you

Guys, I'm trying to use x11 forwarding and from my arch laptop and I can't run X apps from my arch server. I know this has to do with the MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 or something similar, but I can't remember what we did to fix this last time. What's the trick to get it going?? ICEauthority? pam entry? -- David C. [arch-general] A question about using tar... ( -p & --numeric-owner)

I'm a multi-linux-distro/multi-boot guy. I always have more than one configured linux distro on my grub menu. Whenever I'm considering radical changes to one of my working linux I like to back it up. Quite some time ago I learned to do this with tar. For example I've got both Arch Linux and Xubuntu on this desktop pc. I've decided to attempt using a network upgrade process to upgrade the Xubuntu from Karmic to the current Lucid release. So first I boot Arch, mount a storage drive on /mnt/other, & mount the Xubuntu partition on /mnt/xubuntu. Then cd to /mnt/xubuntu. (with a root shell of course) # tar -czf /mnt/other/xubuntu.tgz -p --numeric-owner . And of course if it's necessary I can restore the backup to an empty partition with: # tar -xzf /mnt/other/xubuntu.tgz -p --numeric-owner . But I only partially understand the -p and --numeric-owner options. I do know that -p is supposed to be default for root but I like to make sure... I think I understand that the reason somebody told me (quite some time ago) to use --numeric-owner is because (in this example) Arch may have different user id numbers than Xubuntu which could have bad results if it tried to apply permissions based on user names (especially if it involves a "system account")... What I don't know is if either of these options are necessary during the "tar -czf" operation, or if I only need to bother with them when/if I restore a file system with "tar -xzf" ??? I know it does work the way I expect it to when I use the options for both the "-czf" & the "-xzf" operations. And that I don't get any error messages from tar when I do it that way. But I don't know if using them for the "-czf" operation makes any difference or not. [arch-general] Clarfication request regarding mkinitcpio code

There's a few things in mkinitcpio I'd like to cleanup, but I need to have one issue clarified before I proceed. The header of mkinitcpio itself states that various parts need to run under Busybox's ash, and thus various standards need to be adhered to. However, the file itself sports a /bin/bash shebang, and makes mild use of parameter expansion, e.g. APPNAME=${0##*/} on line 44. I understand that hooks themselves need to run in a more POSIX environment, but would it be safe to use more Bash syntax in the code that generates the initcpio image? I would be sticking to a feature set compatible with 3.2. thanks, dave reisner

[arch-general] Hard lockups during boot

Hi, I used to use a zen kernel but that stopped working which is an unrelated story so I switched back to the Arch kernel, but im getting hardlocks during boot. It happened twice just now, first time was after ATA got init'd but before the SCSI came up. The second time it got to the waiting for udev .. during userspace init. Heres the attached working dmesg log [1] in case its of anyhelp. I didnt want to post this to the bug tracker because of the lack of logs I can provide so ill put it here and if anyone has any ideas please shoot them over. Thanks! Hello, I have a question on iptables. On the arch wiki, the tutorial on a simple stateful firewall includes the creation of the following rule. # iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --syn -m state --state NEW -j OPEN-TCP Which, to my understanding, meant only pass new TCP streams with the syn flag (the initialize connection or handshake part 1 of 3) to the user defined chain. When I checked the output of iptables, I noticed the following rule. # iptables -L INPUT --line-numbers -v 7 OPEN-TCP tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp flags:FIN,SYN,RST,ACK/SYN state NEW Why is iptables also using the FIN, RST and ACK/SYN flags? Hello, As I said in the forums (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=94201) I started contributing to the wiki (minor edits for now), but I'm concerned about the absence of a proper way to obtain a snapshot of it for backup reasons. I looked at the arch-wiki-docs package, but it's only a collection of HTML pages, with no source code, no discussions, no revisions, and not working hyperlinks. This way, it would be hard to restore the wiki after a crash. Other wikis provide a backup: please see http://download.wikimedia.org/ and http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Gentoo_Linux_Wiki:Backup. To reduce bandwidth usage, we can use Bittorrent, just as with ISO releases. What do you think? Thanks.

[arch-general] All kdemod3 menu apps in "Lost & Found" menu folder + control panel apps gone - how to get back?

Guys, Help! Something (probably that fricking kde4) has caused almost every menu item to end up in the "Lost & Found" kde3 menu folder off the main menu. I don't know where that folder is so I can try an move the items back. Also, what ever happened also caused all kde3 control panel entries to disappear from the control panel. Now I don't have a control panel any more: 23:22 alchemy:/opt/kde/share/applications/kde> kcmshell --list The following modules are available: Huh? The only thing I have done menu wise is to edit the Gnome menu, but that shouldn't have trashed my kde3 menu and control panel. Can anyone offer any ideas where all the missing apps are. Where is this "Lost & Found" place all the menu items went? Here is a screenshot of what I see when I move over the "Lost & Found" menu item. Hi, Google Earth can't recognise the $BROWSER environment variable. I've set the one in my '~/.zshrc' as follows: " export BROWSER="/usr/bin/icecat" " When I try to open an external link I get the following error: <http://www.imagebam.com/image/a79e8989327021>. That Italian message means: "cannot start up a web browser. Check to have set the $BROWSER environment variable to the web browser filename you want to start up." I don't know why. Cheers

This is what happens to me now # pacman -Syu ... :: Starting full system upgrade... warning: perl-authen-sasl: local (2.1401-1) is newer than community (2.15-1) I guess this happens because I have installed something from testing at one point, and anyway, I know how to override this warningm but.. The question is, should pacman think that 2.1401 is newer than 2.15 ? -- damjan

I'm not sure this will work with the way Arch packages gcc though.

[arch-general] How up to date does pacman keep Enlightenment(e17)???

I mean given that e17 is installed via pacman: When I do a pacman -Syu, how close to the current upstream version do I get? I'm pretty sure that all the module packages are listed as "svn" I think that's a version control thing designed to keep things up to date. And I think I remember reading something about the Arch way tending to keep packages real close to upstream versions. But While E17 works great on my up to date amd64 Gateway laptop, the same E17 on my amd64 HP Pavilion with Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE, also up to date however, wount allow me to make any changes to the shelf... I can't change it's appearance (except to the extent of accepting a theme's default changes) I can't add or remove gadgets to/from the shelf. I can't change the size of the shelf. I can't change it's position from bottom center to any other setting. Any attempt to do any of the above leaves me with a "This is very bad..." pop-up that wants me to either select [restart (changes not saved)] or [exit (entire configuration messed up. Wind up deleting the entire ~/.e/* tree and redoing the keyboard shortcuts, desktops areas, backgrounds, theme, focus settings etc...] But I don't know if I should ask about this here or if it's actually close enough to the pure upstream version that I should inquire of the enlightenment users mailing list instead??? It's not a major issue for me, BTW. I work around it by positioning desktop gadgets I want on top of the shelf gadgets I don't want via the <ctrl>+<alt>+G immutable shortcut... Still if I've got a truly current e17 then maybe the E17 team should hear of the problem??? If not then perhaps whoever it is that updates the svn packages in community should be aware that on the same machine using the e17 provided with apt-get (both an up to date PCLOS2010 and an up to date Xubuntu Karmic installation) let me make these changes. Guys, I have a strange problem. ctrl+c is completely broken on my system. It won't cancel Jack Schit. It is the strangest thing I've seen. I apologize if there is some archain Arch notice on this I apologize, I've missed it. This is easy to test. Just to 'ping anywhere' and then try and kill it with ctrl+c. I have to open another terminal and either 'killall ping' or kill the pid to get the thing to stop. Same thing happens if I mistype a cli and need to cancel the execution (like if I mistype a ' instead of a " and the script continues on a new line) What's up with this? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Hello, I tried to set up a nfs server and a nfs client in my network. I followed the instructions from the arch linux wiki. The server's ip address is 192.168.0.100 and the client's one is 192.168.0.101. I inserted the option --no-notify in /etc/conf.d/nfs-common.conf on the server. Here are the entries of the configuration files. --- On the server --- /etc/export: /home/user/share 192.168.0.101(rw,sync,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check) /etc/hosts.allow: nfsd: 192.168.0.101/255.255.255.255 rpcbind: 192.168.0.101/255.255.255.255 mountd: 192.168.0.101/255.255.255.255 --- On the client --- /etc/hosts.allow: rpcbind: 192.168.0.100/255.255.255.255 If I try to mount the nfs share with the command "mount 192.168.0.100:/home/user/share /home/user/share", I will get the error message "mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting". The directories /home/user/share on both machines are owned by the user. Maybe someone has an idea? Thanks! Bye Lars

Hello again, the graphics card on my old pc is a Nvidia GeForce 3 Ti 200. Before the release of the version 1.8 of X.org I used the proprietary driver. Because this is not possible anymore, I tried the nouveau driver and everything I can get is a blank screen. The vesa driver works correctly with the same configuration files. Thanks for your time! Guys, On the kernel/radeon, Andreas suggested: "try a .35rc kernel if it's fixed meanwhile. if not ask on the upstream radeon list and then probably file the issue to the Xorg tracker for radeon." Hi, I bought a Asus 1201N and installed Arch on it. Sound (a nVidia MCP79) works but I think sound is too low. I've set everything in alsamixer to 100% and even with a headphone it is still low. Although I can hear it well, I think this netbook can amplificate sound a lot more. Also, the built-in microphone doesn't work. alsamixer doesn't show the controls of it, just of the pararel mic. Hey all, My name is Netanel Shine, and a few days ago i began the process of building an israeli community of archlinux. I used a git clone to set up the main site. (like some other great projects file that archlinux git have to offer like the wiki and the forums) Everything went smoothly and just works great, except for one problem - the package rss feeds. The site address is: http://archlinux.org.il - under heavy development. The problem: As you all can see, the left rss box with the latest updates dont work and the list is empty. - because the system comes with an integrated "packages" part (you can see it here: http://archlinux.org.il/packages - not gonna use it), so the rss list updates from here (i guess) After discussions with some great people (in the irc) we concluded that the rss box pull`s the data from the 'models.Package' object - that connected to archlinux mainsite DB (Package.objects=PackageManager()), so if i dont have any access for the database - thats not gonna work. All sorts of ideas were came up like bulding a script that will do the job or, a an iframe that will copy the box from the mainsite (but the problem it will not be in hebrew) and an idea to replace the table that has for update in pkg_updates. (with logic that pulls from the feed) - but thats not easy because the logic is a wrapped up in django MVC. [arch-general] Bad News .35rc kernel boots to KMS switch then hardlocks box

Guys, Still plugging away at why the 2.6.34 kernels either lock on boot or if boot is successful, the graphics system whitescreens when compiz is started. To investigate (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/20200) Andreas suggested I try the .35rc kernel. So once Thomas pointed me in the right direction to get the kernel from AUR, I built it (it built fine, all default values were used except the Ath9k modules were activated (I have an Atheros wireless card). Bad news, the kernel boots to what I guess is the KMS switch (that part where your screen flips from normal text mode to the higher resolution graphics mode) and then: (1) a 3-4 pixel horizontal white line flashes across the 'center' of the screen for approximately 1-2 seconds and; then (2) the screen goes completely black (dead unpowered black) and the box hardlocks. So the 2.6.35rc test was a bust. Do you think there is any use in recompiling and not enabling the Ath9k module will make any difference. Let me know. I guess the next step is to get with the radeon upstream folks and get them involved because the kernel/atiRS690M problem has gone from: good (2.6.32 kernel); to bad (2.6.33 kernel - compiz works but slow); to worse (2.6.34 only boots less than 20% of the time and compiz whitescreens every time); to completely unsuable (2.6.35rc kernel - won't boot at all) Let me know if you think recompiling w/o ath9k will make any difference and if any of you have contacts on the radeon upstream list, pass them along so I at least have an idea of who has any Arch knowledge on that list. Any other thoughts let me know, because it is apparent something has to be fixed before 2.6.35 moves forward. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [arch-general] Keep older kernel intact while upgrading to new kernel

Hi, While updating to a new kernel pacman replaces the older kernel with the new one. Is there someway to keep the older kernel in /boot and have new entries for new kernel in menu.lst while keeping old entries intact?
