Hi, I haven't upgrade to Xorg 1.8 yet. The problem is that i am using catalyst-test driver i.e fglrx on my system. So i wanted to know if there will be any problems if i upgrade to Xorg 1.8. I was wondering if someone might be able to explain this to me. I was reading the output from dmesg, and found the following entry. CONFIG_NF_CT_ACCT is deprecated and will be removed soon. Please use nf_conntrack.acct=1 kernel parameter, acct=1 nf_conntrack module option or sysctl net.netfilter.nf_conntrack_acct=1 to enable it. I'm still learning my way around as far as system administration goes. I'm not familiar with nf_conntrack. I tried adding net.netfilter.nf_conntrack_acct=1 to the end of my /etc/sysctl.conf file, but the messagestill persisted after re-boot. Can anyone point me to an explination (A) what the message means? (B) if I need to worry about it? (C) how to activate nf_conntrack_acct if I so choose? I'm not doing anything fancy here, just running arch on a laptop. When i learned the fortran 77 standard, it utilized columns 7-72, anything in column 1 signified a comment, col 2-5 were reserved for labels, col 6 marked a continuation line, and columns 73-80 had significance I can't recall. The strict layout had historical significance related to punch-cards, which I believe ran 80 columns wide. The f90 standard I believe expanded the usable codespace to 132 columns, but I'm not sure exactly how that number became astandard. I think the punch-card thing might be where the 80 column value comes from though. Is anybody else getting dependency errors involving the attempted replacement of perlxml by perl-xml-parser? I've got libxml-perl and perl-sml-dom both requiring perlxml, thus stopping the replacement. Should I just sit tight and let the backroom boyz fix it?

Hi All I have a Videoseven 19" monitor L19FM and an Nvidia 6200 graphics card the monitor's capabilities are never recognised properly by any Linux distribution so usually I use the Nvidia-settings tool. I have upgraded to Xorg release 1.8 to do so I had to remove the Nvidia-173xx driver and installed xf86-video-nv. X bombs out with the xorg.conf file in place (/etc/X11) so I moved the xorg.conf file to xorg.conf.old and X will start but only in 800x600 This is my /var/log/xor.0.log http://www.pastebin.org/367717 I tried putting my original xorg.conf http://www.pastebin.org/367716 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ as 20-nvidia.conf obviously changing the devices sections to "nv" rather than "nvidia" I get an "Out of range" message on the monitor, black screen but I wouldn't say X has bombed as such. Usually this means the refresh is wrong however as the information in the file used to work under nvidia-173xx I cant see that its that. I have HAL and udev in the daemons array of rc.conf I also use GDM which again is in the list of daemons. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, I have removed flash after the latest problem with x86_64 release and I want to get youtube working ASAP. To that end, I downloaded nightly sources of webkit(not wanting to download the entire svn checkout) and built the qt port. However the video element is still missing, as tested on http://html5test.com. Digging into webkit build system, I discovered that it has disabled video/audio element support for qt port because the installed qt does not support phonon. from http://repos.archlinux.org/wsvn/packages/qt/repos/extra-i686/PKGBUILD, phonon support is explicitly disabled during qt build. I searched around but could not find a reason for the same. I really do not want to build(more importantly maintain) my own qt build. So why is phonon support disabled in Qt? -- Regards Shridhar

I have made a patch for /usr/share/hal/fdi/20-storage-methods.fdi to force async file transfer for vfat filesystems by commenting out flush and sync as valid options from the list. I checked the thing, now I'm getting the old high speed USB transfer. [arch-general] Totem leaves dvd mounted after quitting

Guys, This may be normal, but I thought we had moved beyond having to manually unmount CD/DVDs after use -- so I have either messed something up or there is a lingering problem. The setup - new i686 install updated through today. I never watch DVDs on the computer, but my son wanted to watch one and his sister had my laptop watching another movie on it, so I set his box up to watch DVDs using totem in gnome. After gathering all the dvdread/nav/etc.. all played just fine on his nvidia 9600 card and the nvidia 256.35-1 module. The problem occurred after I stopped the dvd and then exited totem. When I tried to eject the DVD, it wouldn't -- the drive was still mounted (confirmed with mount). Unmounting the drive fixed the problem, but I was left wondering --> surely we shouldn't be still stuck with manually unmounting DVDs in Gnome?? This being the first DVD I've tried to play, I didn't know, so I thought I would put it out to the community for a quick answer and try to figure out if this was something that needs reporting. [arch-general] Kernel panic after installing avr tools

Maybe someone could help me out. I would like to report a bug but I am not quite sure what happened. I made a parallel port micro controller programmer on Sunday. Since my desktop system does not have a parallel port anymore [noticed this after I was done :( ] I connected the programmer to my server which is/was running a couple month old version of ARCH i686. I proceeded to install these packages: avr-libc avrdude binutils-avr gcc-avr I *think* that (this was late at night) one of the dependencies was new linux-headers but no kernel. I answered all with yes and the installation started. As soon as it was done I could no longer execute commands and my system would only return "Illegal instruction". I restarted using the reset switch and was greeted by a kernel panic. All options on the grub boot menu will result in a kernel panic. I tried to follow this guide http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_Panics but when I want to chroot I get "Illegal instruction". The file system is mountable and everything appears to be fine. I searched around a bit and it appears that this sort of thing happens when you use an i686 kernel with a i386 computer but this system used to run fine. I was about to reload this machine but maybe someone could help me figure out what happened exactly so that this can be prevented in the future? Here are the machine specs: OS: Arch i686 (2-3 months old) Mainboard: VIA EPIA-M (I think this has a 1GHz CPU) RAM: 1GB Storage: LVM 2x 250GB special configuration: grub2, /boot on LVM installed: apache2, php5, mysql, samba, sshd Any takers :) ? -- John Wo Unrecht zu Recht wird, wird Widerstand zur Pflicht. Hi guys, i was working on updating mythtv and i have a problem finding the proper perl package. I'm not a perl guy myself and i found in aur perl-date-iso8601. The problem is that is not installed in the proper place. /usr/share/perl5/site_perl/5.10.1/Date/ISO8601.pm and the check is done in DateTime/Format/ISO8601.pm check_pl_lib DateTime::Format::ISO8601 perl -e use DateTime::Format::ISO8601; Can't locate DateTime/Format/ISO8601.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.10.1 /usr/share/perl5/site_perl/5.10.1 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at -e line 1. the building is done with: perl Build.PL ./Build --installdirs=vendor ./Build test ./Build install destdir=$pkgdir is this not the package that i need or the building is wrong? -- Ionuț

Hello, please remove package pmt (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22689) which I maintain. There are several reasons for it: 1) I don't want to maintain it anymore 2)A little background is needed here. pmt used to be a part of [extra] but because of lack of interest it was moved to AUR where I adopted it. It contains several png handling tools (pngcrush, png2bmp, bmp2png, pngmeta) but only one is really maintained – it's pngcrush. As time gone by it was more and more difficult to keep all tools working with new libraries in Arch. Then I found out someone packaged pngcrush itself (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22877) and now it has much more votes than pmt ever had. png2bmp/bmp2png can be easily replaced with imagemagick convert. I'm not sure about pngmeta, but it didn't have a release since 2001 so I guess this one would be a big loss either. Thanks, Lukas

Hey, So, we all heard it doesn't need HAL anymore. But what does it need? It would seem like it depends on either "nvidia" or "nvidia-utils" because I got rid of those last night and now X won't start. Well... it _does_ start, but all I get is a bunch of nice coloured stripes across the screen in random angles and sizes. I'm not really sure how to handle this, since I can't seem to access my system now. I'm burning an arch ISO while I type, and gonna try that. Whilst... any tips?

Hello, usually Arch Linux have had very quick updates to packages when the upstream bumbed a version. However, I am slightly annoyed by the fact that VLC [1] and Wine [2] have been out-of-date for a long time. VLC 1.1.0 was released about a week ago and Wine 1.2-rc1 was released on 2010-05-21. Now there is Wine 1.2-rc5. I should also note that regardless of the Wine being a release candidate it is as stable release as 1.1.x-versions including the currently packaged 1.1.44. The officially "stable" version is 1.0.1, but 1.1.x and 1.2rc are considered very stable, yet they are officially both "development version". I agree with the one who packaged 1.1.x in Arch, it is stable enough for Arch and 1.0.1 is just too out date. Please update vlc to 1.1.0 and Wine to 1.2-rc5.
