Hi there, it seems that there are some problems with 2.6.33 and my thinkpad x200. The system randomly freezes completely. That means the mouse and the keyboard aren't working and the screen is just frozen. This is no Xorg crash and I do not really know if its a kernel panic, because the num led doesn't blink. There is absolutely nothing in the logs. Not even a single hint. So I downgraded to 2.6.32 and I had no freezes since yesterday. (But I cant say 100% that its ok, but i think so). I have a guess that it has something to do with wireless lan and battery running, but this is vague. Does anybody here has similar problems? [arch-general] Latest NVIDIA en kernel update

I see there are some discussions going on the nvidia, KDE and arch forums about the performance of KDE 4.4 and latest nvidia driver, no results yet as I can see. My current setup with 190.53 works fast and snappy (no special xorg param); but updating to anything later drops performance by a factor, so I resisted upgrading nvidia. Now with the latest kernel update I cannot keep the 190.53 driver. Anyone have a solution for performance tweaking the latest KDE and nvidia combo? (I dont want to get too out of sync with the updates). Manne

Hi all, I'm proud to announce the April 2010 snapshot of my TalkingArch CD for blind users. This is more-or-less equivalent to the netinstall CD, with one major difference. The system provides spoken feedback as soon as you boot with the disk. I made some improvements to the project since the last release in the fall of 2009. First, I now provide an x86_64 image, as well as an image for i686. I learned that I could use qemu to build the 64-bit version. Hi, We have configured a set of machines to authenticate against an LDAP database. For some machines we do not want the users to login via their normal shell but some custom program runs for them. For example if some one tries to login to the smtp server via ssh, they get authenticated via LDAP but their default shell fo smtp should be say a program that sets up the email forwarding. More generally is there a way, by mucking around in the pam config or ldap config to ignore certain fields in the ldap database and fill it with some default values. Is there a way to achieve this apart from inelegent ways like copying the ldap database locally and creating a /etc/passwd file ? Best Regards ppk

I know users with multidevices have a serious problems with recent 1.4.0 update because they can only use either the scanner or the printer. I've just found this patch from Till Kapeter, the main OpenPrinting(foomatic) developer and Debian cups package maintainer. http://www.cups.org/str.php?L3357 I assume this could solve all outstanding issues. But sure this is not the current upstream way. And I cannot test it in any way because I don't have such a device. This is to show affected users a possible way to recompile our cups packages with this patch. If it really solves the trouble we might think if it should be done manually (we could put the patch into svn though). That would receive my vote. Or if we could trust Debian here and provide stuff that is not the upstream way but - if proved - solves all the trouble. I couldn't provide any help but doing building the packages. Hi, I'm not quite sure how to call this issue, maybe that's the reason, why I couldn't find anything on google nor in the bugtracker :(. I'm using the X server with GDM (Gnome), which is attached to Ctrl+Alt +F7 (btw: How do you call this?) during startup. Pretty normal. But as soon as I restart the X server (using Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, but it doesn't matter) the X server gets attached to the next free "combo", which is quite obviously Ctrl+Alt+F8, whereas Ctrl+Alt+F7 shows just a blinking cursor. Interestingly this just happens once, so restarting the X server doesn't change anything, it stays attached to Ctrl+Alt+F8. I guess this could be known by some of you, I've experienced this on different machines already, but due to the fact that I don't know how to call this issue, I couldn't find any work-around. So, first of all I would like to know, whether you can reproduce this? Secondly I would like to know where the consoles are set up, so I can set up a seventh console, so the X server will get started on Ctrl+Alt +F8 in the first place. This has a different reason. My F8 key has a LCD printed on it (as it is also a function key to switch the output between the LCD and an attached monitor), so this would be a cool thing ;). But I don't know whether this would fix my main issue, or if the X server would then be shifted to Ctrl+Alt+F9. -- Best regards, Karol Babioch <karol(a)babioch.de>

Hi, I have openoffice installed as well as lprng. Lprng used to work for openoffice providing I believe "Generic Printer" or similar. Some time back for it work under any gtk-2 application (like firefox) I had to add to the gtkrc: gtk-print-backends = "file,lpr,cups" This is still working for firefox and other gtk-2 applications, however it doen't help at all to openoffice. I launched spadmin to see if I could actually add a printer manually. But it doens't work, the most that can be done is trying to install a driver. So no luck... Has any one made lprng work properly with openoffice? Thanks, -- Javier.

Since the openssl update, whenever I install or update a package with pacman, I've got this message as the last pacman output line when a package is installed (a new package or an update) /sbin/ldconfig: /usr/lib/ is not a symbolic link But everything runs fine AFAIK. Hello, Trying to do a complete system update, I get: error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files) cups: /etc/cups/printers.conf exists in filesystem Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded. Certainly that file does exist, it probably has to in order to make my printer work. But why - is this an 'error' - does it block the update ??? And - What do I have to do to enable the system update ? And maybe pacman could be a bit more informative in such cases ? Ciao, -- FA O tu, che porte, correndo si ? E guerra e morte !

The motivation behind creating these packages was to be able to use gstreamer based apps without GNOME dependencies. In my case I wanted to be able to use XFCE's media player Parole and the Decibel Audio player. Here are the packages: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=36635 http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=36636 Compile time support removed: -OSS support -ESD support - seriously does anyone really use ESD any more? -gconf support -aalib support -libcaca support Make and binary dependencies removed: -libsoup-gnome - this is the worst culprit in my opinion -esound -libcaca -gconf -aalib Anything else will depend on the libraries you have installed. On my system for example the souphttpsrc module is built as I have Midori installed which has a libsoup dependency via Webkit. HAL support has not been removed. XFCE still relies on HAL I believe and when XFCE 4.8 comes out (it won't use HAL) the HAL dependency will be removed from my PKGBUILD. In the mean time you can edit the PKGBUILD yourself. I also had to split the packages as the AUR doesn't support split packages yet. Due to this you'll have to compile the whole source twice unfortunately. If you use an AUR helper you'll also download the source code twice too so you may want to run makepg manually. I've compiled and tested the packages on my X86-64 system and they work for me. As always with AUR though, ymmv. Ananda

Could be I'm missing something here... But shouldn't 'pacman -S eterm' put executable somewhere in the standard path??? This was done using a root shell in a konsole terminal under E17 on my recently updated Arch installation... I did search the wiki for eterm just in case there was something about eterm that requires more than a simple pacman install. Didn't find anything useful. Am I missing something obvious here??? [arch-general] stability from pm-suspend ?

I've been using pm-suspend for temporarily shutting down the computer for later use, but now I raised the question whether it is safe or stable to do so at a constant basis. That is, seldom real reboots and often just suspend. For me the ratio of reboot and suspend is like 1:5. As you know that suspend don't really unmount the drives to read-only before it goes into suspension, when resumption had failed, you usually need to repair it and check for errors. This is at least the case for me when I use ext4. Even if it did resume successfully, I started to wonder if it also would harm the filesystems. I really like to hear some experiences whether that you have been using ACPI S3 kernel suspension for quite some time now, and feels it is really stable and safe to use, or that, you had ran into troubles using them. -- 李彥學 (Ian-Xue Li) http://b4283.ath.cx A student.

I've recently started using Xorg 1.8 from the [xorg18] repo to finally be able to get rid of HAL. Xorg is working fine, but I want to remove the remaining packages that depend on HAL. It looks like there are only 3: gnome-vfs, gstreamer0.10-good-plugins, and vlc. I can use ABS to rebuild these without HAL, but I'm concerned that these packages may actually need it. Has anyone else stripped HAL completely out of their Arch install? -- The world is full of tough guys. It doesn't need me to be one, too.

Without that resume is not possible as the "resume image" is stored at encrypted disk. The other suff is solved by some DE such as KDE, that can be configurred to lock your session when suspending. I was wondering why I was not able to login to a remote arch server.
