[arch-general] Serial To USB Adapter

Guys, I have a Keyspan USB to Serial adapter. Now I am trying to be able to connect to a Cisco switch via console serial cable using the Minicom utility. My problem is I don't know how to tell Minicom that my serial device is connected to /dev/ttyUSB0 or maybe it already knows & I just don't know how to use it... Hello, im getting tired to be forced to remember many different options for various package managers on different distros. so i did a little script that allows me to do like "asd install foo" on any distro i got that script installed, and it will install the package using the systems package manager. so, before i hack this script to a better state, i was wondering does this kind of script/project already exist ? cheers .andre

Actually, I'm not sure if this is thanks to E17 itself or specific to Arch... And it's no big deal anyway because: A) e17 is "under heavy development", (And I know that means it's unstable) B) I've already got a workaround that works for me... But I'd like to understand what happened a little better. First you should know that I'm a multi-Linux/multi-boot kind of guy, and that in every distro I install I depend on their package management system to keep me out of dependency hel^Hck... ;-7 Of all my currently installed distros, Arch is the one that seems most likely to install an unadulterated upstream package, rather than a distro specific {modified} version. And e17 is definitely a "package" that I wouldn't even attempt to install by hand. Thus the fact that the only e17 on my laptop that this has happened to is the one in Arch, doesn't make it distro specific. It probably only means the Arch e17 is more fully updated... At least that's mt best guess. Anyway I'm not sure what the e17 version number that I installed to Arch sometime since my mid March initial installation of Arch itself was, but as of now the e17 help about lists it as "Enlightenment 0.16.999.063". Prior to this recent pacman -Syu, e17's run prompt worked normally. Afterwards it's become fussy what the first character I input into it is. That is I usually start opera via the run prompt and when I type "o" the command history displays the last instance of the command And I can in fact start opera. I also use firefox, though I usually start that from inside alpine. Today I tried to start firefox from the run prompt. But as soon as I type an "f" into the first character position of the command input field, I get a pop-up error telling me that "Enlightenment SEGV'd" That also advises me to compile everything with "-g in CFLAGS" So far, the the restore button succeeds in restarting e17 without closing any open applications... But of course I didn't get firefox. I can start firefox from an xterm. And I tested that I can type "of" into the run prompt without an immediate SEGV But I can't type an f as the first character. I haven't tested the whole alphabet, But I also can't type a command starting with "b" or "/" as the first character. Though just because I'm stubborn I can tell you that I can start firefox [via e17's run prompt] with: "~/../../usr/bin/firefox" (go figure) I did say I've got a work around that works for me... I've also got XFCE installed as a back-up desktop, so I've reassigned the keybinding I used to pull up e17's run prompt with, to "/usr/bin/xfrun4". Which is works just fine. Guys, After the latest openssl updates, the AUR packages for createrepo and repoview are failing. I know it must be the result of the openssl changes. My question is, "in situations like this do I just try rebuilding the AUR packages, or does the maintainer have to make updates to accommodate the changes?" Ever since the openssl rebuilds moved out of testing, the package search webapp shows an extra copy of ca-certificates in [testing] at the same version of the one in [core] now. This package doesn't really exist in the [testing] DB and there isn't an SVN entry for it in testing-any either. What's going on here? Is it a bug in the package search that I should file in flyspray?

[arch-general] How to get permanent network devices?

Hello, I have three network devices (eth0, eth1 and eth2) in my system. Currently I use the networkmanager (Gnome) to configure my LAN connection. It is working good. My problem is that every reboot the device names are changing so somtimes my LAN device is eth0 next reboot it is eth2 ..... I think this is done by udev. Can someone explain me how to get permanent device names every boot? I want to have eth0 as my normal LAN device, eth1 as a bridge device for KVM VMs and eth2 as bridge device connected to my DMZ for VMs. With virt-manager I can setup these bridges but if the device name changes every boot it is unpossible to use. Guys, One thing I miss with Arch are init-script shortcuts for starting and stopping processes. rc-commands really help cut down on typing. For example, all suse did was to create links to the files in /etc/rc.d/... with a naming convention of rc<init script name>. So, for example, instead of having to type: /etc/rc.d/postfix the shortcut was simply rcpostfix I have normally seen the sym-link shortcuts placed in /usr/sbin, but /usr/local/sbin works fine as well. The convenience is addictive. If you manage your box from the command line or want to, then you can give this setup a testdrive. You can create the sym-links very easily with the following cut and pasted to the command line (as root - all on one line): for i in $(ls /etc/rc.d); do [[ -e /etc/rc.d/$i ]] && [[ ! -h /usr/local/sbin/$i ]] && ln -sv /etc/rc.d/$i /usr/local/sbin/rc${i}; done You need to make sure /usr/local/sbin is in root's path to use the rc-commands without having to type the full path each time (that would defeat any convenience). You can quickly check to see if /usr/local/sbin is in root's path by logging in, or su'ing, to the root account and pasting the next line into the command line: set | grep \/usr\/local\/sbin If you get an answer, your fine, if you get nothing, then, as root, add /usr/local/sbin to the path with: PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/sbin EXPORT PATH you can make the path permanent by adding to, or creating /root/.bashrc with the following: export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/sbin I know most of you know all this, but this was written with additional detail to help those who may not make much use of the command line now, but may be interested in learning more about the control it offers. I am getting ready to use my newly built Arch Linux system for the 1st time and use AUR and read the Wiki but I have a question that I am not clear on: Next choose an appropriate build directory. A build directory is simply a directory where the package will be made or "built" and can be any directory. Examples of commonly used directories are: ~/builds Now when I create the "~/builds" directory, does it matter if I do this in a regular user's home directory or in 'roots'? It is not very clear and I don't want to break anything or improperly build a package from AUR.

I've changed the mirror script from the wiki so mirror admins can run it every minute without huge additional load. This will help a lot to reduce update delays now and even further when we have multiple tiers (don't know how mucht that works already). I've already described it somewhere, but for those who don't know it yet: The script fetches an md5 sum of checksums of the repos (core, extra, testing, community). If the first checksum is different then the one locally generated on the mirror, it will check those for every repo. If they are also different it will rsync as needed. HTTP requests are used to fetch the checksums because most mirrors already have HTTP servers running and because they are cheap. I've also created a patch for db-scripts to generate the md5sums for the master server. As I don't have a repo set up this patch is untested (it's the same code as in the mirrorscript though). Once this is merged on the master we can start to tell mirror admins to use the new mirrorscript which can be found at http://karif.server-speed.net/~flo/tmp/mirrorsync.sh.txt C&C welcome :)

I am really needing to install VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads) on my Arch 64-bit machine. I noticed that there is obviously no official download for Arch specifically on their site. I then checked Pacman and it appears there is only a OSE (Open Source Addition) available for 32-bit (i686) systems only. My question is if I download the file from the vendor's site I linked above, can I simply not just install that manually on my Arch Linux 64-bit system or will I run into problems? The package I downloaded was called "VirtualBox-3.1.6-59338-Linux_amd64.run" which I assume is just a self contained installer with all the necessary downloads and required files. I am just trying to figure out that best solution for installing VirtualBox (PUEL) but if I have to, I can even deal with using the less-featured version (Open Source Edition) if it was available via Pacman... [arch-general] Emerald crashing on theme change or edit in Gnome

Guys, For some reason, emerald has started crashing when changing themes in Gnome. It changes the theme just fine, but then crashes. (disappears - no error shown or in any logs). The crash occurs as soon as you click on a new theme to change it. This happens when you select the first theme 3/4 of the time. Other times, you can click on two, or maybe even three themes looking for the one you want before the crash occurs at other times. The result is the same, emerald-theme-manager just disappears into thin air. A restart restores emerald without error as well. The problem prevent you from being able to look at more than one theme or edit the emerald themes. The issue isn't with any new theme, I have a set that I've been using without error for a while, it seems like one of the recent updates may be the cause (new Xorg?). I will look at it in kde later this evening. Has anyone else experienced this or got any more information on this new emerald trick? I know emerald well from a user's standpoint, but not from the developer standpoint. I have checked all the logs I could think of (messages.log, everything.log, Xorg.0.log, errors.log ~/.xsession-errors), but I didn't find anything. Is there somewhere else I should be looking? I'll try to provide more information on the behavior in kde and see if I can get anything else from the command line. However, if you have any suggestions in the interim, I would sure appreciate it. [arch-general] keyboard not working in Xorg after package updates

I upgraded my extremely not-up-to-date server last night (523 packages upgraded). The upgrade generally went well, except for one significant issue: the keyboard is no longer working under Xorg. It works fine in a command line tty though (i.e., ctrl-alt-F1). Guys, I don't know what's up here, but I updated the system ( no [testing] ), and rebooted to load the new kernel, and http was dead. On start, the error said it couldn't bind to port 443 because it was already taken -- Huh? Here are what little details I could come up with: [23:28 nirvana:/home/david] # lsof -i | grep 443 [23:28 nirvana:/home/david] # apachectl stop httpd (no pid file) not running [23:28 nirvana:/home/david] # apachectl start (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:443 (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:443 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs First time I've seen this one. The latest system update completed fine, so I should be up to date. Apache is: apache 2.2.15-2 php-apache 5.3.2-6 the kernel is: kernel26-2.6.33.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz kernel26-headers-2.6.33.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz I have a second x86_64 Arch box where the hardware and config is close to what I have on the problem box and apache it was working fine. Update lvm2app.h Doxygen comments and add lvm2app Doxygen config file. Update nightly tests and lvm2app unit tests to cover tags. Add lvm2app functions lvm_{vg|lv}_{get|add|remove}_tag() functions. Add dm_pool_strdup to allocate and copy memory in tag library function. Refactor vgcreate, vgchange, and lvchange for tag library function. Refactor snapshot-merge deptree and device removal to support info-by-uuid. Version 1.02.45 - 9th March 2010 ================================ Add --showkeys parameter description to dmsetup man page. Add --help option as synonym for help command.

This should be really fast, way faster than using a for loop to read each file.
