Hello, I have a small problem with default permissions of Automounted Removable Devices. Whenever I mount it via KDE4.4's Auto-mounter. it sets all files to be owned by root. $ ls -la /media/Backup/ total 24 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Feb 10 16:07 . drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Feb 10 17:30 .. drwx------ 2 root root 16384 Feb 10 16:07 lost+found I know KDE does not mount anything, it asks HAL. nothing is in /etc/fstab but in /etc/mtab and in /proc/mount I got $ cat /etc/mtab /dev/sdb1 /media/Backup ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal 0 0 $ cat /etc/proc /dev/sdb1 /media/Backup ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 This means I can't write/modify anything as a normal user. mounting manually every-time I need to transfer few files is annoying.HAL mounts drives by default only for root user. [1] hal 0.5.14-1 [2] qt 4.6.1-1 [3] kernel26 2.6.32.8-1 I was wondering how to change this behavior and so by default normal users could read-write into auto-mounted partitions. i think I am soon tired of thunderbird 3.. I could revert to vers 2 but why is the newer vers slow, laggy, semi-stallish? has anyone else a funky thunderbird vers 3? any switch values to cause it to work quicker? alternatively, what is your favoured mail news client for POP3, IMAP, Syndicates, news groups NNTP, all in one? I want a better program. andrew

After doing a pacman -Syu and installed the mkinitcpio 0.6 , I'm getting an error insmoding padlock-sha just after I enter the root device luks encryption passphrase. I'm assuming there is an easy solution to this. Any idea?

It'll be up to him how to package this, but this prompts a more general question I have. Granted that daemon scripts are not supposed to be modified by the ordinary user; the /etc/conf.d mechanism is the usual way to supply arguments to the daemon scripts. However, it's one thing to say "not usually supposed to be user-modified" and slightly different to say "overwrites user mods without notice." I find myself tweaking a few /etc/rc.d scripts now and then. I know there's an existing mechanism to protect such changes: NoUpgrade in /etc/pacman.conf. But I wondered why more PKGBUILDs didn't just add the daemons to the backup array. So the question is: should we think of it as _policy_ that rc.d scripts don't go in backup array, and should instead always be explicitly protected by the user if user wants to mod? No problem if so, it's actually helpful to know there's an explicit policy to always do it the one way or always do it the other way. As to dcron 4.2, I've already gotten some feedback. Thanks. [arch-general] Firefox 3.6 window size issue on nvidia TwinView

Having a weird problem in the latest firefox, and was wondering if anyone is seeing anything similar. (And/or know cause/workaround.) When I shut down FF and start it again, the new FF window is a smaller size than the old one. But it's not just that it's not remembering the correct settings - it's actually doing something more devious than that: Even if I manually set the height in the localstore.rdf file (or delete the localstore and let FF re-create it) FF is *overriding* the height value in that file - with a value of 900. Now that value is too round a number to be a coincidence - and it's not. Apparently, it's taking the height from the *smaller* of the 2 screens I have connected to my laptop (the internal panel - 1440x900). But I tweaked my nvidia settings a long time ago specifically to avoid this issue, and they've been working properly with FF ever since (i.e., setting window at correct size) - up until the recent FF/xulrunner upgrade, that is. My nvidia xorg settings are as follows: Option "TwinView" "on" Option "TwinViewOrientation" "Clone" Option "MetaModes" "nvidia-auto-select, nvidia-auto-select" Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "nvidia-auto-select" EndSubsection Option "TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder" "DFP-2, DFP-0" DFP-2 is my external monitor (1680x1050), and DFP-0 is my laptop internal panel. I haven't been able to find much mention about this issue - either on the Arch boards, or elsewhere on the Net. [arch-general] pacman too slow on reboot

Hi, Recently I'm facing a funny problem. pacman (and even packer) is toooo slow to search -Ss (db+aur) or -Qs (db). I see a lot of HDD activity going on. [arch-general] udev and/or device-mapper problem

I updated to udev, cryptsetup and device mapper from testing the installed kernel 2.6.32.6 and rebooted. now /dev/mapper/root and /dev/dm-0 are not there but /etc/mtab mentions /dev/mapper/root /dev/mapper/home and /dev/dm-1 exist The computer boots till the fsck part then stops because there is no /dev/mapper/root to fsck. I'm trying not to touch any libpng/libjpeg stuff in testing but non of those messes up booting anyway. After fsck fails, it dropped me to a shell. I downgraded udev and device-mapper, recreated the kernel image and I can boot now. Any ideas?

Okay, this is it. The busybox-based mkinitcpio is entering testing now. BACK UP YOUR OLD (WORKING) INITRAMFS (kernel26.img) FILE! Also, do NOT use this if you have root on NFS, it is NOT IMPLEMENTED yet. Known issues: If you use 2.6.33 and enable the support for ext2/ext3 in the ext4 driver, root on ext2/3 won't work with the autodetect hook, I'll fix that for the next version. Number of systems that failed to boot after the upgrade: 0 (so far) Hooks adjusted: All base hooks + keymap, encrypt, lvm2, mdadm, dmraid, raid (now a symlink to mdadm), v86d. (Also, I hear that the uresume hook works without modification). I am still looking for someone to implement NFS root with this, please contact me if you are interested. This will not be the final version, there is still some work to do, but for now this requires more testing.

I spoke to Jörg by phone at first to explain my role, and then by email. I reminded him in doing so that I had agreed with him about the acceptability of combining GPL'd code with a C-library under CDDL in order to make the Debian/GNU/OpenSolaris stack called Nexenta. (I believe this part of our conversation is the source of Jörg's mistaken statement that I somehow indicated that cdrtools is non-infringing, although the issue of the "system library exception" in GPLv2 is completely distinct from the problem presented by the CDDL-licensed libraries libscg and libschilly combined with GPL'd mkisofs in cdrtools.) After speaking to Jörg we began our review of the complete source of cdrtools, and soon verified that GPL compliance on mkisofs was broken. We told Jörg that as far as we could see he was the only copyright holder on the CDDL'd libraries, which he confirmed. In that case, I pointed out, he could give all the permission necessary to solve the problem, without any license changes: he simply needed to give permission as the relevant copyright holder on the CDDL's libraries for combination with mkisofs and distribution of the binary and source under the terms of GPL, without any additional restrictions. We drafted for him the thirty-nine words needed: "You are permitted to link or otherwise combine this library with the program mkisofs, which is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). If You do, you may distribute the combined work under the terms of the GPL." Jörg disputed our analysis. He argued to us: (1) that the binary mkisofs is not derivative of the CDDL-licensed libraries because it merely links to them; and alternatively that (2) CDDL Section 3.6 ("Larger Works") permits the combination. He claimed to have German legal advice confirming him on point (1), but without regard to his German legal analysis, which differs from that of our German lawyers, the argument is incorrect as a matter of law, at least in the United States, and GPL'd mkisofs (whose copyright is at stake) is a US work to which US copyright law applies under the Berne Convention. As to his point (2), while CDDL Section 3.6 permits combination with code under other licenses, it nonetheless requires that "the requirements of this License are fulfilled for the [combined program]." Since it is impossible to observe certain requirements of the CDDL while simultaneously respecting the GPL's prohibition of additional restrictions (GPLv2 Section 6), the CDDL Section 3.6 permission is insufficient to allow the combination. Hence the permission we advised him to grant. Though Jörg continued to argue that he didn't *need* to grant the permission, he never explained why, in the face of opposing legal analysis on behalf of the copyright holders of mkisofs he didn't *want* to grant a harmless permission that would allow his work to be included in Canonical's Ubuntu distributions. After weeks of discussion and many hours of my time and the time of my associate Aaron Williamson, Mark Shuttleworth decided there was no point in further fruitless negotiation and I agreed. SFLC was not paid for its work by any party.

(Come on, do you know well every installed library on your system?) And with broken cairo the user just gets "fav_gtk_app: error while loading shared libraries...", so it requires a little bit sophisticated bug-hunting. I just mention the "-Sy system_breaker_package" issue again, where sodepends or libpng14 could help. I know that these system breakages require some user fault too, but I think the main purpose of pacman (should be) to not allow break our system. If I accepted your standpoint as a solution, I would suggest to not use %CONFLICTS% array or versioned dependencies ;-) (Because "elite" users should know that foo conflicts with bar, and all his packages [dependencies] should be always up-to-date...) [arch-general] library version conflict -- how does Arch solve this ?

Hello all, Today I installed Latex (texlive). Doing this installed new versions of libpng and libjpeg, and this broke emacs, xv and gnuplot (and maybe others I haven't discovered yet). I was able to make xv work again by removing and re-installing it. This didn't help for emacs, but adding a symbolic link in /usr/lib (to the wrong library !!!) made it work again. But I've been unable to get gnuplot working again, and this is one of my most essential tools. So what's the Arch way to solve this ? I find it extremely strange that updating a library removes the original - never seen this on any other distro. Nor is there any need to do this. Ciao, -- FA O tu, che porte, correndo si ?
