Uh, this might be a quick question, since it's a little abstract. I'm dual booting and I've noticed that every time I boot into Arch after I've booted into one of my other systems, there is a forced file system check. It's not a huge deal, because I use Arch almost exclusively, but I have to say, I cringe at the thought of having to boot into one of the other systems now. How would you trouble shoot this? I have also never seen a system where after every ~20 reboots, a file system check is mandatory. This might just be my ignorance here, so a reference to some background about that part of the boot process might suffice. Thanks in advance. -- chris

[arch-general] problem with video driver ?

Hello all, Today I installed Arch on my desktop which previously had Fedora. All works well except ssh -X zita2 emacs where zita2 is my laptop. It works, but it is ex tre me ly slow, I can count the lines being displayed when scrolling a page. This used to work perfectly before. Other apps doing quite intensive X work don't seem to be affected. OTOH, the emacs running on the laptop is of course the same as before. Video driver is 'nv', but it doesn't show up in lsmod. Some others do: 'drm' and 'ttm' which I haven't seen before. As far as I was able to find out, 'drm' is related to 3D-acceleration. I don't need nor want this, and I'm suspecting it could be related to the problem I'm seeing. Any hints/help will be appreciated ! Ciao, -- FA O tu, che porte, correndo si ? E guerra e morte !

[arch-general] Boot Device Didn't Show Up

Every time I try and install Arch Linux 2009.08 Netinst .ISO disk on my newly built PC hardware, I get the following error: Waiting for boot device... Error: Boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds... Falling back to interactive prompt. You can try and fix the problem manually, log out when you're finished. ramfs$ The same ISO works perfect on my laptop and other PC's but on my personal $1,000 PC, it doesn't. I can't figure this out. I also tried the 2009.08 Core disk and I get the same thing as with the 'Netinst' disk. I don't know if it's because I have a S-ATA DVD-ROM drive on this machine. I can boot from disk and see the Arch install options...even play "Space Invaders". But when I select the install Arch Linux options, it boots into a 'Live' environment and then hangs on the error above. Someone please help...

I am trying to seamlessly run an x86_64 kernel on my i686 machine. I have enough aliases that most things work right (prefixing with linux32), but bash can not handle setting e.g. "./configure" as an alias and there is always something I have missed. So, I came up with a cunning plan... Create a script /bin/bash32 which just runs "linux32 /bin/bash", then add /bin/bash32 to /etc/shells and run "chsh -s /bin/bash32". It works in a way... when I run uname, it tells me I am using the i686 kernel. Success! Now the bad part... my $PATH gets reduced to: /home/allan/bin:/bin:/usr/bin The /home/allan/bin part tells me that my ~/.bashrc is being sourced, as does my prompt and all my aliases. So something else is being missed. The /bin:/usr/bin is the minimum path defined in /etc/login.defs. All the rest is in /etc/profile and the various /etc/profile.d scripts. Why are they not being sourced... Or are they being sourced and then I open up a new shell with my script which gets rid of them? Allan

So, if you try it, please save your existing initramfs to a different filename as a fallback, and do not perform kernel upgrades until you either confirmed that it works, or downgraded to the klibc-based mkinitcpio.

Hi there. I'm newbie in Archlinux's boot process. I need to run my own script in early userspace (initramfs). It must be after mounting root file system, but before switch root. I've opened default initramfs (kernel26.img) and reviewed it's content. So, Archlinux uses some kind of tool called 'kinit'. And it seems, that this tool mounts root and then switch. I tested both patches locally and they appear to work. They are really tiny and straightforward so they should be safe to apply to the live dev site with little/no further testing. (I'm not sure who is maintaining the web interface nowadays, so I'm sending the patches to this ML.)

I have never understood Arch's approach to properly setting a FQDN on a server. According to the Wiki...and I will quote: "Add your hostname, coinciding with the one specified in /etc/rc.conf, as an alias, so that it looks like this: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost yourhostname If you use a static IP, add another line using the syntax: <static-IP> <hostname.domainname.org> <hostname> e.g.: 192.168.1.100 yourhostname.domain.org yourhostname" Now this does not work for me and maybe I am not understanding this but my server hostname is "mail" and it will be managing a domain called "iamghost.com" so I need my output of the command 'hostname -f' to result in 'mail.iamghost.com' and when I follow the guide, that is not what I get. Obviously my server has a static IP so I followed the Wiki as shown below: #<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname> 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost mail 10.1.1.200 mail.iamghost.com mail The above gives me the correct output when I run the 'hostname' command = 'mail' but when I run the 'hostname -f' command, I get localhost.localdomain. This will cause severe failures in MySQL and Postfix. Not to mention all my certificates I self sign / generate will not have the proper info. Can someone please explain to me why this does not work for me? Normally in distributions like CentOS, Debian, Slackware, etc etc etc...I am able to just enter a hostname and domain name for the system. Thanks!

[arch-general] Why Is My RAID Installing Failing?

OK - I am once again attempting to use Arch install for 2010 on my system which has two identical hard drives and I simply want to mirror both drives in a RAID1 array. I have read the Wiki so much at this point it has become memorized. I am NOT using LVM or anything, just a Arch user who wants RAID1, very simple, right? Well wait, it gets easier. I am not even attempting to add my MBR /dev/sda1 (/boot) to the RAID1 array. Crazy simple, huh? You might even ask well why am I even asking for help then...well because I hate the Arch installer and not because its CLI only. No, I love the simplicity of the installer and not being graphical but the RAID configuration is a complete mess. I am booting from a fresh 2009.08 Netinstall ISO disk. I select the 1st option and login as root (requires no password). Before I just junp into the installer (/arch/setup), I need to configure a few things: 1 - I use 'cfdisk' to configure /dev/sda & /dev/sdb. - /dev/sda1 = 4096 MB (bootable) 83 - /dev/sda2 = The rest of the disk (selecting 'fd' type) - /dev/sdb1 = 4096 MB (SWAP) 82 - /dev/sdb2 = The rest of the disk (selecting 'fd' type) 2. I need to load my RAID1 modules using the following command: #modprobe raid1 3. Now I need to create my RAID1 mirror using the following command: #mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 4. Check to make sure the RAID is rebuilding and both devices show [UU] #cat /proc/mdstat So now everything is working fine and going as it should be via the Wiki. Now the Wiki in my opinion is way too bloated and tries to do too much so I am cutting and pasting what I feel applies to me. Which is why I am showing you everything I am doing here in this email to see why I am failing. Now I need to update the /etc/mdadm.conf file with my new RAID1 I created with the following command: #mdadm -D --scan >> /etc/mdadm.conf And I also verify that my info was correctly populated into the /etc/mdadm.conf file using the following command: #cat /etc/mdadm.com So now I am ready to run the /arch/setup command from the CLI to begine configuring the install / my new system. 1 - Select Source = I configure my install method and all my network variables 2 - Set Clock = I configure my Time Zone and stuff 3 - Prepare Hard Drive(s) = Here I can skip to section sub menu 3 since I already did most of this above. I simply now just select mount points for my existing partitions: sda1 = /boot (ext3) sdb2 = swap (swap) md0 = / (ext4) 4 - Select Packages = I select the base packages and what I feel is required for my setup. 5 - Install packages = I let the system download and install the packages from my mirror. 6 - Configure System = This is where I feel my confusion comes into play. Perhaps I am missing something: */etc/rc/conf = I simply add the changes below: - In 'Hardware' section add "MODULES=(md_mod raid) - HOSTNAME="mypc" - "sshd" added to the "DAEMONS" line */etc/mkinitcpio.conf - add 'mdadm' on the 'HOOKS' line after "sata" & before "filesystems" as noted in the Wiki. */etc/resolv.conf - Check to make sure DNS looks good...it does. */etc/hosts - Add my FQDN here as follows: 127.0.0.1 mypc.mydomain.tld mypc *Root-Password - Create a secure root password. Now that is it. I select 'Done' and let it build 'initcpio' images. 7 - Install Bootloader = Here I select "Grub" and then review the default menu.lst it produces. I then select /dev/sda to install Grub on. "Grub was successfully installed" Now I am done and back at the bash shell logged in as root. I then run the following command: #cp -a /etc/mdadm.conf /mnt/etc/mdadm.conf to make sure when the system boots, it is aware of my RAID1 mirror. Now I reboot because I assume I am done. Here is my error: ::Running Hook [mdadm] Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/md0 Root device '/dev/md0' doesn't exist, attempting to create it ERROR: Failed to parse block device for ids for /dev/md0 ERROR: Unable to detect or create root device /dev/md0 You are being dropped into a recovery shell Type reboot to reboot Type exit to try and continue booting If the device /dev/md0 gets created while you are here, try adding 'rootdelay=10 or higher to the kernel command line. ramfs$ _

As nitrogen is currently orphaned I am sending this message here in hopes to avoid duplicate efforts. Two issues: -Nitrogen won't build against libpng 14 -Nitrogen crashes with "terminate called after throwing an instance of 'Gdk::PixbufError'" According to the developer: "It had a stray include of a libpng file that it hasnt needed in years that just sorta stayed there and recent libpng updates made that line problematic." He states that debian has a patch for this. However, he also states: "That's been long fixed in git. You can clone master if you want and grab it, or wait a few days, 1.5 has been in rc for a few weeks and no complaints about it so far so i'll release it soon." He stated it can be as soon as today. The crashes occur with both nitrogen 1.4.2 (from the extra repo) and git (soon to by 1.5). As I am writing this message, I am currently working with the developer to resolve this issue. He has given me a patch, which essential catches the error and prints some debug info to stderr. With this patch nitrogen git runs flawlessly. So I believe it is going to be a simple fix that should be hopefully be applied to git in the next few hours. With this said, I suggest that we wait for nitrogen 1.5 to be released. Even if we were to patch 1.4.2 we would still have the issue of the gdk::PixbufError crashes. ~pyther

[arch-general] Can you rebuild an nv dmraid array in linux - or is it just gparted and copy partitions?

Listmates I had a failing drive in my arch server so I installed a new one. The bios raid 'nvidia dmraid' provides the feature to 'Rebuild' the array and allows for adding the new disk to the array. After that configuration you are prompted to "Boot to an OS that supports rebuilding.." (or something very close to that). I image that there is some windows utility that does the rebuild on boot. Something probably on one of the cd's that came with the motherboard. The motherboard is an MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum (MS-7374) and has the nvidia dmraid 0/1/5/ chipset. In the past I have always just used gparted to copy partitions from good drive -> new drive and created a new array. Based on the output of creating the array in the bios, I'm curious if I can just rebuild does it work in linux? how? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [arch-general] Last networkmanager in testing busts everything in gnome ?

Hello everybody. Yesterday, my computer installed from testing last networkmanager version, 0.7.998-1. It worked OK until I shut down my computer. This morning, I cannot get any single program to be launched in gnome, even xterm using alt+f2 dialog box. After I downgraded to version 0.7.2-1, all was again working.
