[arch-general] Problems with most recent gstreamer updates

Hey everybody, I was wondering whether anybody else had trouble since the update to extra/gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins 0.10.14-1 and extra/gstreamer0.10-good-plugins 0.10.16-1 using applications that make use of gstreamer. A couple of people including me seem to have issues with it that cause all gstreamer applications to fail. I'm bringing this up on the mailing list because I can't seem to find the root cause of the problem by myself and because gstreamer is a critical part of any Gnome setup (gnome-settings-daemon fails without it, for example). The problem on running gstreamer applications is this: Error re-scanning registry , child terminated by signal Even gnome-settings-daemon in debug mode has little more relevant info than this error message. Since gstreamer itself probably doesn't provide detail logs of what went wrong, I'm having trouble finding the cause. The gstreamer bug tracker doesn't have a bug filed on this so I don't know whether this is an Arch problem or an upstream problem. [arch-general] KDE packages orphaned?

Just wondering: It looks like many of the KDE packages are now orphaned. e.g.: kdebase-dolphin, kdebase-konsole, etc. Anyone know why and/or if there's any plans for someone else to adopt them? Thanks, DR

[arch-general] How to specify configure options with makepkg

I'm trying to install psychosynth from AUR. Ogre is one of the deps, but the comments on the psychosynth page say to compile Ogre with devIL, not freeimage, which is the default image loader. Configure says that I can set an option, --disable-freeimage, but where do I set this option when using makepkg to build Ogre? I have installed devil, so it's ready to be used by the configure script, which includes instructions for both freeimage, and devIL. Thanks for any help with this. Nigel.

No changes to the config, no further patching. http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/887240 and because of a build issue http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/887529 I'd like to move it soon to core. Please give signoffs. If you don't use it try it out if it works for you as fallback and can boot into shell with a clean dmesg. Thanks. -Andy

[arch-general] Konsole problems

Hello, I searched the forum and the bug database for this and did not find anything about it. I have a problem with Konsole. I am using KDE and the binary nvidia driver. The composite effets are enabled and my system is up to date. Sometimes Konsole's window disappears partially. Then I have to minimize and maximize the window to renew it. I did not recognize this behaviour when KDE 4.2 was installed on my system. Does anybody have similar problems? It is not a big problem at all. But it is a little bit annoying. Thanks for your help! Hi there :) I searched the web but I can't find any about IPv6 in rc.conf. I saw in Debian you can put some v6 stuff in /etc/network/interfaces. So I thought maybe I can do the v6 stuff in rc.conf but how? And can I use v4 and v6 at the same time in the same rc.conf? Next question is can I put multiple IPv6 addresses in rc.conf? So for all of you who don't know about IPv6. You can handle a lot of IPv6 addresses at one interface. Can someone help, please? Thanks a lot! [arch-general] Maximum JFS file (not filesytem) size

Dear fellow Archers, I tarred up a couple filesystems and piped the tar stream through ssh to a remote computer where I dd'ed it to a file. This a common backup method I've been using for a few years now if I'm going to wipe a system and start over. I'm using JFS on the arch linux system that was being copied to. The resulting file ended up being 137G (which is about right based on the source filesystem usage). du --human --total a4b4.tar 137G a4b4.tar 137G total However, I can only restore from 63G of the tar ball, so I attempted to see how much could be read. dd if=a4b4.tar of=/dev/null dd: reading `a4b4.tar': Input/output error 123166576+0 records in 123166576+0 records out 63061286912 bytes (63 GB) copied, 1193.69 s, 52.8 MB/s There were no critical files in that tar ball that are not kept elsewhere, that is not the issue. At this point I can consider what is past the 63G point in the tarball to unrecoverable, which is fine. I tried skipping the first 63GB, but that does not work. dd if=a4b4.tar skip=123166576 of=/dev/null dd: reading `a4b4.tar': Input/output error 0+0 records in 0+0 records out 0 bytes (0 B) copied, 27.2438 s, 0.0 kB/s It seems like it took a while to figure out that it could not perform this operation. The box in question is running an OpenVZ patched 2.6.27 kernel, but that might not have anything to do with it. Yeah, I know, I could have used bzip and made 2 separate files, I could have used rsync -av, I could have checked tarball before wiping the source files systems, etc, that is not the point here. Now that I know that JFS on my setup has a 63GB file size limit, I know now to accommodate for that in the future. I'm mainly just curious on how the system could write a larger file than it can read. Dwight

I notice 8.4 still hasn't made it in to extra's I also notice that libpqxx appears to be 2 minor releases behind (or is it that its version numbering is weird? saying 3.0 when it's actually 3.0.1?). [arch-general] Assisting Chriss or adopting his CD as a separait project for Arch blind Users

Hi, As one of Chris Branon's friends, and as one who has submitted valuable feedback, I'd like to see Chrisses CD get more support from the Arch team leads, etc. I also have another suggestion. Why couldn't core snapshots be automatically generated, and Chrisses CD/and the other official images could be all updated? As newer kernels came out, we could even get weekly/monthly netiso images automatically wich each core update, so that we'd never have to worry about waiting for 2 3 4 months or whatever. :) Just a suggestion, only. I don't expect that this could be automated. I'm just suggesting something, nothing more. But the fact that this CD of chirsses is unofficial isn't great. He does a wonderful job. I'd like to see him get more people who could build CDs, or whatever. That way he doesn't have to do all the work, and can focuss on maintaing Speakup/etc. Maybe an #Arch-Accessibility channel should be created with an associated mailing list. Your thoughts? I welcome anyone including Chris and anyone else who feels that Accessibility is important to comment on this. I will CC this to Arch-General as well so that the community in general can be made aware of this. Also, I wanted to ask why weekly builds couldn't be done? I'm talking about autobuilds, btw, taht use your isoscripts. I have seen other distros that offer accessibilty I.e. GRML, etc, wich have automatic CDs. Gentoo now has minimal stage3 tarballs, and automated snapshots, etc. Just curious why Arch hasn't done somethinglike this. Thanks so much all, happy arching, and have fun! :) P.s. My favorite feature of the LiveCD (I've only used Chrisses bc I can't use the others) is that you folks don't start anything we don't want. [arch-general] Stuff in /etc/cron.d/ won't work?

Hey there, I just noticed that I just couldn't get cron to properly execute stuff in /etc/cron.d/ no matter what I did. Let's say I have /etc/cron.d/lol with this content: * * * * * root echo "lol" >> /tmp/omg and restart crond afterwards, the crond log tells me that cron actually runs this command every minute without a problem. Sadly, this isn't the case and the file at /tmp/omg is created but remains without contents. In contrast, if I put an executable script to /etc/cron.hourly/lol with the content: echo "lol" >> /tmp/omg then the file at /tmp/omg fills up with lots of "lol"s after a couple of hours. It also works fine if I put it into the crontab. Now, I'd like to be able to use /etc/cron.d/ as well because it seems more transparent to me. Is there anything I do inherently wrong? -- Sven-Hendrik

The reason I ask is because I believe this module is used only for usb printers. Since cups no longer needs this module the only application that I can think of that would need this module would be p910nd. p910nd is a small printer daemon intended for diskless workstations that does not spool to disk but passes the job directly to the printer. I believe there might only be a few people that use this in arch. Those who do use it can compile usblp. It just seems to be more logical and cleaner to remove the module if there is only a very small user base. ~pyther

They've simply changed the way the system is packaged. Wait a day or so, and your mirror should catch up, and the dependencies won't be a problem any more. I did the upgrade this morning (without any dependency issues), and everything works great, and a couple bug fixes were very evident. I've been looking for documentation about split packages in the usual places (man PKGBUILD, the wiki) but couldn't find any.. am I missing something or this is a feature-not-implemented? -- damjan
