I see that the i686 version of arch only sees 3.25G of the 8G installed. Does the i686 kernel support PAE? I have not gotten to install X86_64 but I am working on it

Listmates, What is the best way to get quanta+ on kde43? On the suse kde43 installs I have both kde3.5 and kde43 b2 installed in parallel so I just use the kde3 quanta without issue. On Arch, I have installed kdemod3 in parallel with kde43 b2 and I can use quanta that way, but is that still the only option? Can I get rid of kdemod3 and just use the quanta package from an Arch kde3 repo or is it kdemod3 or nothing? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Listmates; They say 3rd time is the charm, and so it was. On my 3rd install of kde-unstable with an existing kdemod3 install, I have hit deduced a procedure for doing it that will allow for the installation of kde-unstable without conflict or the need to resort to any "unrecommended" features of pacman. For those of you wanting to try the latest development version of kde4 without losing your kdemod3 install, this is the easiest way I have found to do it. I'll layout the procedure below, but a note. Don't get these steps out of order or you will have many conflicts listed whey you try to install kde4. (I've been there). Here is how I did it: (1) Edit /etc/pacman.conf and add the kde-unstable repository BEFORE the kdemod-legacy repository: [kde-unstable] Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist [kdemod-legacy] Server = http://kdemod.iskrembilen.com/legacy/x86_64 (2) Do a fresh update of your current system with: # pacman -Sy -u :: Starting full system upgrade... :: Replace kdemultimedia with kde-unstable/kde-meta-kdemultimedia? [Y/n] Answer YES !! (3) Install kde4.3 Beta 2 as a normal kde install from kde-unstable # pacman -S kde For the FIRST package group Answer YES !! kde package not found, searching for group... :: group kde (including ignored packages): kdeaccessibility-colorschemes kdeaccessibility-iconthemes kdeaccessibility-kmag kdeaccessibility-kmousetool kdeaccessibility-kmouth kdeaccessibility-kttsd kdeadmin-kcron <snip> :: Install whole content? (4) Finally, run 'updatedb' as root to sync your local database for mlocate: # updatedb This isn't strictly required, but it help chasing down issue after the install if there are any. Now just log out and select kde as the session type and check out the new kde4 desktop. Hopefully this will save some other poor soul quite a bit of time on their first kde-unstable install. P.S. After the install you will still have kdm3 installed as the greeter daemon in /etc/rc.conf. This is fine. kdm for some reason doesn't list your kdemod3 session as an available session, so sticking with kdm3 will provide access to both kde3 and kde4. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. List, Most of you know this, but it caught me off-guard. With Arch (with good security) if you define your squirrelmail data and attachment directories outside your document root (which you should), then you must explicitly add the path to the parent directory of data & attachment to the open_basedir path in /etc/php/php.ini. Example: open_basedir = /srv/http/:/srv/www:/home/:/tmp/:/usr/share/pear/:/usr/local/share/sqmail Restart the web server and your good. Without it, you are dead in the water... -- David C. [arch-general] Possible bug with kdm - doesn't show kde3 as session option & no console login

Listmates, Before filing a bug, I would like to see if anyone else can confirm this behavior with an i686 install. I installed kde-unstable which installed kdm instead of kdm3. With kdm3 everything seemed OK. I could select kde or kde3 as the session type and I could do a 'console login' (CTRL+N). However, with kdm, I no longer have the option of starting kde3 and console login fails. The console login just appears to do a kdm restart. It just flashes blank and then right back to the kdm greeter. Bugs or features? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [arch-general] KDE-unstable - kapps crash on start (konqueror, kmail, etc.)

Listmates: On my i686 box I am experiencing crashes for many of the default 'k'apps like konqueror, kmail, etc. I have provided the backtraces to kde.org. I went back and installed the kdemod3 kde3.5 to have access to the kde3.5 versions of the same apps within kde4.3. I don't know if the Arch developers are interested in me providing the backtraces or not. Let me know if you want them and I will send them in. The remainder of kde43 is working well. [arch-general] kde4 Tip for Desktop Effects "Animation duration" timings

Listmates, When configuring many of the individual desktop effects, there is a field called "Animation duration" or "Rotation duratio" (the cube) which are the timing/delay (in miliseconds) for the effect transitions which is set to "default". I have found the "default" to be incredibly low. Increasing the "Default Animation" to ~270 really help the appearance of the effects. You will need to adjust this value for your hardware, etc.., but I have found ~270 to work well on several boxes. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Listmates, Installed kde-unstable and it is looking good. A couple of system-settings crashes reported to kde.org (added to the existing bug). One issue that I deal with with Beta 2 on both suse and Arch is the kicker panel not wanting to unhide when running compiz. Sometimes the panel gets "stuck". When you move the cursor to the bottom-edge of the screen, you can see the panel "glow" appear among the bottom edge, but the panel remains stuck. Clicking around on the desktop to force the focus to change to the desktop and then to a window or two generally "unsticks" the panel. I can't figure out what is happening. I have seen this behavior on the 4 kde43 beta2 install I have. Anybody have any ideas on why compiz would cause the plamsa ("kicker") panel to behave like this? DR, List Here is the situation after the difficulty I had installing kde-unstable on the x86_64 box where I finally just installed with '-f', I have the exact setup on an i686 box where I am trying to install kde-unstable, but this time finding a way to do it without resorting to the '-f' option. On the box, I have kdemod3 installed and configured and I have never specifically installed kde4 from anywhere (I guess I got it by default with the Arch install). So far, all packages for kde-unstable have been downloaded to the i686 box when I tried to install kde-unstable with 'pacman -Sy kde kde-extragear'. IMO this packaging scheme sucks for both vi and vim. I was looking at the CRUX vim script and if a package like that can be achieved IMO its the best solution. Current situation (in testing) vim depends only on perl (optdepend) so this package might as well be in [core] instead of [extra] . That means it would need signoffs for it & gvim as well. I would be in favour of building a vim package in [core] that includes both a vi & vim binary, like CRUX seems to do it. http://crux.nu/ports/crux-2.5/core/vim/Pkgfile I just couldnt get my script to build so hadnt suggested it so far. I wonder if thats possible. The reasons the previous scheme changed was mainly because people complained that vi isnt really vi but vim, so this scenario would cover it Sorry for interefering. -- Greg

I am gathering info on this new system I just bought a new computer ($550USD complete) as I wanted to go 64 bit Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P motherboard AMD Phenom II X4 810 AM3 socket 2.6G 8GB High performance DDR3 ram Radeon HD 4670 Will arch 64 install and run on this? With little trouble? :) I am concerned with the ATI video card, Any problems with this card? What can I expect running Arch 64 on the system? Now I can make many more errors only twice as fast :)

It is the biggest Open Source event in the country (see http://2009.rmll.info/?lang=en) Are there Archers planning to attend?
