[arch-dev-public] critical: fakeroot broken again, breaks makepkg

Oops, this should have gone to the public list directly, so I'll repost it here: I saw this problem a while ago already, but didn't really investigate it. When building a package, you would often end up with non-world-readable /usr/man/manX directories. This should definitely be fixed quickly, as it prevents me from updating several packages.

Hi! Today I've noticed a message in lkml about util-linux-ng. A quote: "The util-linux-ng is a fork of the original util-linux project. The goal of the util-linux-ng is a transparent and reliable development that follows the Linux kernel and Linux distributions". Hi! IIRC this was mentioned some time ago, but I don't remember why it was not implemented. Why don't we have the "base" package group? IMO it would be nice if user would be able to do pacman -S base to get all base packages installed (e.g. in chroot or when installing from another distro). -- Roman Kyrylych (Роман Кирилич)

Hi guys, so, exam time is over and so is my little vacation, so I can forward you a mail from the FrosCon team. summary of the important parts (too lazy to translate it all ;)): * we will have free wireless, but they are not sure if it will work all the time so they try to also provide a ethernet connection. however we will need to bring our own switch and cables * they would like to hear how many people will attend. Last thing I remember was alex, andi, jan, pierre and me. Hey guys, Just threw together a couple of useful scripts, and I figured I may as well share. Note of warning!! Do not use these scripts on any PKGBUILDs you don't trust! They source every PKGBUILD to obtain the information - if a single PKGBUILD has rm -rf ~ you'd lose your home directory. You've been warned. ;) (of course you could run it in a sandbox as well, but yeah.) find-deps: This one finds all PKGBUILD files located in any subdirs of $(pwd), and finds any and all packages that depend on the command line argument. Very useful when searching for packages that might need a rebuild when you're updating a lib - just run it in your cvs directory and it'll go and find everything that lists your pkg as a dep. find-bad-licenses: This one also finds all PKGBUILD files located in any subdirs of $(pwd), and analyses all entries in the license array. If the license isn't one located in /usr/share/licenses/common, and it doesn't start with 'custom', then the package and its invalid license are output to stdout. Also, if no license is defined, it outputs this info to stdout as well. At the moment, it doesn't check the validity of custom licenses, but it does its job well; I've also attached the list it generates when run against extra/community/unstable. It's a long list - almost 2k invalid/non-existent licenses. I intend to go through what repos I have access to (extra, unstable, community) sometime in the near future (probably within the next couple of months) and clean up this license situation - we really need to get consistent with these things. Anyway, if you can get any use from my scripts, please do. ;) -- Travis

There was a short discussion not long ago on the TUR mailing list regarding external kernel modules. It was suggested that they be setup using dkms, which will easily allow one package, for multiple kernels. Having looked at the dkms setup suggested, and the few example modules in the AUR (search dkms), this might be a good idea, and make it much simpler to support a range of different kernels. Contrary to what andyrtr said, the DKMS system looks quite good, and would fit well. James

Following a minor disagreement about how best to create .desktop files to launch apps with root privs, James and I came up with gooeydo (gui-do - ge' it?). You can read all about it here: http://thewrecker.net/?page_id=199 As an example of the purpose consider gparted and wifi-radar - both require root privs but are most often just run by users. I used sudo in my .desktop file for wifi-radar, while James used gksu in gparted. Because I don't have gksu on my system gparted won't appear in the menu. We think gooeydo nicely addresses the problem by ensure that a suitable "run as root" apps is used in all cases. Cheers, Phil

If I'm feeling creative I'll take a static snapshot of the homepage and put that up in the meantime, or perhaps that "there's nothing wrong with archlinux.org" image that was floating around back when we had dragon ;) In any case, if anything breaks yell at me (or him or both). -S
