Can this patch https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=33142 be applied to Arch's xorg? It solves famous problem https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865 with broken keyboard input for users who use multiple keyboard layouts without any noticeable side-effects. Hey everyone, I'm trying to get my laptop backlight keys (fn+f6/f7) to adjust the brightness of my toshiba laptop backlight. Previously, I had entered the following in my /etc/acpi/handler.sh to handle the acpi events generated when those keys were pressed: video/brightnessdown) echo $(($(cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness) -1)) > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness ;; video/brightnessup) echo $(($(cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness) +1)) > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness ;; However, as I am working on migrating to systemd, acpid no longer runs and hence does not handle these events. I have started getting kernel oops yesterday. This started after fully updated testing repo and switch to systemd over last weekend. I'm running kde. Bug is filed as shown below with screenshot which I managed to capture of the OOPS from today's crash. Laptop is sandy bridge i7 (lenovo w520) - details are filed in bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/32014 I added 7 attachments but I cannot see them in the bug report for some reason. (screen shot, lspci, lsmod, /proc/cpuinfo, /proc/iomem, /proc/ioports, scripts/ver_linux) Question: Are the uploaded attachments not visible to me - or do I need to put them on a web server somewhere? The forums say there are no other distros akin enough to Arch, and that you will be stuck with systemd eventually anyway but I disagree and you may be surprised about what Sabayon offers and the similarities to Arch. ______________ Similarities ______________ Bleeding edge many binary packages (>10,000) and the entire Gentoo Source repo (>30,000) For pro audio on Gentoo Ralf you may be interested in this and the ease of compilation customisations rather than hacks, though I have no experience with the info in this link myself, yet. http://audiodef.com/projects.php?project_id=1 ___________ Benefits ___________ optional pre-built hardened packages in the main repo Intended to be customised compilation control via Gentoo Use Flags (especially useful if you don't like all the default flashiness and the rainbow of colors and graphics on the console for a particular system or any other package defaults) A script based openrc that I really like by default and systemd only if you choose it and for the foreseeable future. It may take more work though initially than keeping initscripts on arch currently and is not supported by Sabayon however you may receive help from some on the Gentoo list as setting it up is described here. http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Systemd The advice is to stick to binary (equo) or source (gentoo's emerge) but if you are confident the two are in sync at the time of build/install or you can keep an eye on the versions and compatibility of what you are installing/building, then you can mix the two and gain all the power of Gentoo and it's USE flags without the waste of energy or time and resources for compilation. _______ Cons _______ They recently dropped non-PAE kernel support, so a few pentium Ms from 2005-2007 will not work (Typically the system I happened to want to test it out on and so had to use an older laptop). You don't start with a minimalist system but they have many iso flavours, so one such as server or hardened server should suit as a start, if that's a reason you use arch. The package system is very very cool and colourful, but not as fast as pacman, possibly because it uses both hashes and signatures. Hi all, After reading the previous discussion on not needing to be in various groups like audio, optical etc, I decided to remove myself from a bunch of groups and "do the right thing" after upgrading to GNOME 3.6 earlier. I removed consolekit once pacman told me it was no longer required by any package, then culled myself from various groups - the important one being audio. When I login via GDM, it seems my "session" isn't active: % loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID | grep Active Active=no Therefore, I'm not added to ACLs for my sound devices and Pulseaudio fires up using a "Dummy" output. Not sure what to do here, I've done the following to try and fix it: - Disabled / re-enabled certain services, I've had systemd running for a while and a few things had changed / been updated (e.g. I now have a default.target and the display-manager.service whose symlink lives in /etc/systemd/system) - Tried messing around with pam (putting pam_systemd.so in a couple of spots). - Tried searching for documentation on what might be wrong, but most of the things I found relate to not using a display manager like GDM and just using startx. [arch-general] urxvtd frequently crashes

On my new install I've been using urxvtd to run terminals, and I'm finding that it frequently crashes. Either I'll switch to a window and it won't redraw or accept input, or I'll close a window and all of them will close. I was using the script in the urxvtc man page to spawn a daemon as required, and that either results in memory usage skyrocketing, or heaps of processes spawned waiting to connect to the daemon. What am I doing wrong? Searching the interweb has thus far found nothing except that if urxvtd crashes it brings down all the clients (which I've become quite aware of). AFAIK there's no glitches in my ~/.Xresources[1] I usually have a tmux session or two running, so I don't lose much, but it's still annoying when I lose an active download with aria2 or something like that.
