[arch-general] syslinux menu, dualhead issue

Hi, yesterday I connected a LCD monitor LG 24MB56HQ-B by HDMI and a CRT monitor by VGA to my Computer with an Intel HD Graphics of a Celeron G1840. IIRC (it's just a day ago :D) if I turned on the computer both monitors showed the BIOS as well as the syslinux menu at the same time. However, important is what happens today. I dislike the LG 24MB56HQ-B, so I gave it back and bought an EIZO FlexScanEV2450. The EIZO LCD monitor as well as the CRT monitor are connected by the same cables. Both monitors still show the BIOS, but just the CRT shows the syslinux menu. The LCD monitor claims that there is no HDMI signal. If I turn of the CRT monitor it doesn't change. If I disconnect the VGA cable, then the LCD monitor turns on and shows the syslinux menu. There are no issues with lightdm or openbox, xorg.conf and xrandr allow all wanted configurations, IOW I can chose between the LCD, the CRT or use both monitors. In short, just the syslinux menu does use the wrong monitor. I want to use the LCD display only, just for some tasks I want to use the CRT monitor, too. However, disconnecting the CRT monitor and only connecting it on demand isn't an option. Is there a way to ensure that syslinux does use the monitor connected by HDMI? Regards, Ralf

[arch-general] makepkg - any way to recompile only newly patched files in large packages?

All, There was a fix for a gtk2 bug I filed regarding the recentchooserdefault.c file. (it was a one-line fix where a variable needed reset to 0). Is there any way I can configure makepkg to behave as if the gcc -MP -MD options had been given to have it only recompile the one patched source without rebuilding the entire package -- again? I've been through the wiki and the man page, and other than --repackage, there doesn't seem to be anything that would work (or I'm just missing it). -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] Why doesn't svntogit/{community, packages} describe cloning (or download) of individual packages?

All, After abs demise, I ran into needed to rebuild gtk2 with --enable-debug=yes for a gtk.org bug report. Finding the packages from the normal package search is simple, but when you are on svntogit -- the only helpful discussions are to clone the entire repository, e.g.: Clone https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/community.git git://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/community.git ssh://git.archlinux.org/srv/git/svntogit/community.git Nowhere are there options to download or clone the current repository (like github) and nowhere is there a mention of 'asp export pkgname'. There is no wiki for asp and the only mention is in the ABS page -- and that information relates to the svn part of the tree. 'asp export' works fine, but if there is nothing on the svntogit that directs folks to it, the only information given is to 'Clone' as shown above. (which will result in roughly 500M each for community and packages if the instructions on the page are followed (compared to what was 88M total for abs). Can individual clone or download urls be provided on each package page like with github? Can references to 'asp export' also be provided? Those seems like things that should be done to help with the transition away from abs and help preserve bandwidth. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] Got Dummy Output after recovered from Suspension

The model is Dell Inspiron 7560. The system got no sound after recovered from a suspension. After reboot, got Dummy Output. Have rebooted for several times, but useless. Re-enabled sound controller in firmware, not work. Reinstalled latest linux kernel as well as pulseaudio, not work. [arch-general] Malformed URL when plugging in External HDD

Hello, I have an external hard disk and when I plug it into KDE arch I see the name of it, when I click on it , I see the disk spinning but I can't open the content of the disk. Sometimes, I see error like "Malformed URL" in a dialog box. However, I can use the disk completely fine on Arch GNOME and Windows. So I think it's my KDE setup which has some error. Can anyone help me diagnose what is going on ? Thanks N

Thank you Mr. Rankin for saying this. Bruce Perens blocked me* (also calling me a "fool" later to a 3rd party) after I started to brainstorm the defenses that would be raised about a week or two ago: letting everyone in the world know what he thought of me for mentioning laches etc. Such talk is naivete to him and he "doesn't suffer fools willingly". Brainstorming what defenses the opposition will raise is the thinking of a naive fool according to Bruce Perens. I also noticed that Bruce Perens friend Professor Moglen hasn't commented, instead opting to sit and silently judge, but I did bring up the fact that GPL v2 lacks a no-revocation clause, thus (barring estopple) said license can be revoked at any time by the grantor. Which is the actual reason v3 of the GPL needed to be drafted (the patents issue being a foil). I guess Professor Moglen (RMS, ESR) and the rest don't want too many people to know about that part either and thus would rather downplay anything else I have written. To be clear: Rights-Holders can sue GRSecurity for the copyright violation stemming from the flagrant violation of section 6 of the license. Rights-Holders can also revoke GRSecurity's license to their code by notice and then sue them if they continue to make derivative works of said work. So Rights-Holders have two options there at their disposal. The GPL v2, by itself, does not give rise to an estopple situation where there has been no communication to the other party that they relied upon that the license would never be revoked by Rights-Holder. The permission flows from the Rights-Holder and not through intermediaries.
