[arch-general] Arch, IBus, and Rime: IBus engines are not switched

Hi, I stumbled over odd behaviour after installing ibus-rime on a rather fresh Arch installation. Switching between my two configured input methods (German, Chinese) works nicely both by keystroke or the menu in the systray of my Gnome Shell. I expected that this will make IBus change to an appropriate engine. However, whenever I switch between the Chinese and German input methods (I can observe the systray icon change from de to zh or the other way round), IBus always reports the following: $ ibus engine xkb:us::eng Chinese input does not work (the keyboard changes to US though). When switching to German, then everything works as expected, even though IBus still reports xkb:us::eng as the engine in use. I found this workaround $ ibus engine rime $ ibus engine rime By manually setting the IBus engine, Chinese input works as expected. Do you have a clue how to make IBus change to the right engine after switching input methods? Or is it likely to be misconfiguration in my locale settings? Cheers, Julius

[arch-general] Super weird dd problem.

Hello, So I was creating a archlinux usb bootable drive: [root@masterkorp-laptop Downloads]# dd bs=4M if=archlinux-2013.06.01-dual.iso of=/dev/sdb 130+1 records in 130+1 records out 548405248 bytes (548 MB) copied, 0.964976 s, 568 MB/s I was like WOW, this was too fast! But nothing ever gets written to the pen drive. To add to the weird factor, a dd to dev/sdb1 (partition) works as it should, slowly. But then ofcourse the iso gets unbootable. The md5sum on the iso is correct. I tried with diferent pen drives. Please, any suggestions is welcome. -- Regards, Alfredo Palhares

[arch-general] uml_utilities dropped?

Hi, all I found that uml_utilities vanished in the repo. It can't be found in core/extra/communit repo, and also AUR . I need the command "tunctl" to install tap0 NIC, which is used to setup my qemu virtual machine. [arch-general] Is erlang-nox dropped?

Hello, On yet another -Syu this morning I was asked whether to replace erlang-nox by erlang. Are we dropping the -nox variant? The caution was: "Use 1M to restrict your speed so that it writes properly" which I never actually understood, but never had a problem with. Only recently have I seen the suggestion to use 4M, but always with 1M as the fallback option if it doesn't work. -- - Toyam

[arch-general] Updating KDE whilst logged in causes loss of background wallpaper image

There is a KDE bug that has been around for some time which is in the upstream report at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300708 which seems to be that if you update KDE (as in today's update to KDE 4.10.4-1) whilst being logged in to KDE you can lose your background wallpaper image. Updating from a text console without being logged in to the graphical desktop does not cause the issue to happen. There is a workaround in the first comment in the report link above in case anyone gets caught by this. -- mike c

[arch-general] /bin symlink breaking fetchmail

Hey all, In short, the latest upgrade seems to have borked fetchmail: fetchmail: Error writing to MDA: Broken pipe Deleting the /bin symlink and creating a /bin directory containing only a symlink /bin/sh pointing to /usr/bin/bash, makes fetchmail work again. Running `strace -vf fetchmail` reveals that the execve("/bin/sh"...) call returns EPERM. I'm well and truly stumped. I'm using courier-mta as my mda, but that shouldn't be relevant.
