Hello! This is my application to be a Trusted User. My name is Daniel Micay, and I am a 20 year old living in Toronto. Dave Reisner (falconindy) is my sponsor. My username on the wiki, github and the forums is thestinger, and I go by either thestinger or strcat on IRC. I started using Linux in 2008/2009 and Arch was the first distribution I liked enough to install outside of a VM. I quickly fell in love with the elegance of vanilla, up-to-date packages and eventually moved away from a more traditional desktop environment to awesome and then i3. Linux was my gateway into programming, as I picked up shell scripting and that eventually led to learning Python. At the moment I mostly use C++ and Python, but I have an interest in Haskell and more recently Rust. I began contributing back to the community in 2010 by putting my efforts into improving the wiki, and in September of 2011 I joined the ArchWiki administration team. At some point I became quite active on the #archlinux channel, and I do my best to disseminate tidbits of knowledge that I've picked up there. The following are packages that I use and would like to maintain in [community]: * rust * libgit2 * uwsgi and the official plugins (split package) * faenza-icon-theme * intel-gpu-tools * ohcount * namebench * transmission-remote-cli * sparsehash * ttf-symbola * python-libgit2 and python2-libgit2 (split package) * python-scrypt and python2-scrypt (split package) * python-bottle and python2-bottle (split package) * httpie (not a library, so just python3) * libxkbcommon * kmscon (the tagged release, only -git is in the AUR) * ncrack * reaver * vim-indent-object * vim-fugitive * vim-systemd * zenburn and solarized vim colorschemes ... and in the future: * various rust libraries * libc++ (currently no stable release) * libc++abi (linux support is a work-in-progress) * vim-clang-complete (it needs a new stable release) All of these are under free licenses, and most currently meet the 10 vote threshold (some would have to wait a bit). I would also like to look into having the Android SDK in [community], but the number of licenses it uses is really a mess and I doubt Google's pre-built version can (or should) be redistributed as-is. Hi, the package [0] is outdated. A while ago, I offered to take over the package in a comment (2012-10-06) and emailed the current maintainer some time later (2012-11-17). I got no response, though. I got a working and updated PKGBUILD [1]. Could you please orphan iscan-plugin-gt-s600 so I can adopt it? Thanks! [aur-general] Suggestions for dealing with packages that require root

Hi all, I'm after some suggestions for how to deal with packages (namely amanda [1]) that require root to build. In this particular instance, amanda needs the user/group that it will run under to be present at compile time. Less than ideal, but that's what upstream gives us. At the moment, I check if the user/group 'amanda' already exist, and if not, create them. This has the side effect that makepkg needs to be run as root if the user/group doesn't exist. I then cleanup (delete) the user/group at the end if I created them. That's messy enough already, but it's been suggested that I use sudo to handle the user add/delete parts to make the PKGBUILD friendlier to AUR helpers. I know helpers needs to work with PKGBUILD's, not PKGBUILD's made to work with helpers, but perhaps there is a middle-ground where we can all eat our cake? ;) I don't want to include sudo as a makedepends since it requires configuration to work properly, nor do I want to make the PKGBUILD "intelligent" to try and auto-detect a privilege escalation tool (sudo or su) which will lead to a bigger mess. [aur-general] Compiling with UTF-8 symbols in build path

Hello, I just got a comment on my git-cola package, stating that the compilation fails, when the path to the PKGBUILD contains a UTF-8 symbol like the Euro "€" symbol. Example: The PKGBUILD is located under "/home/paul/€uro/". "cd" into that directory and execute makepkg. I am really sure, that this is an upstream problem (I guess it is even an issue in python2-spinx) and I can't solve it. Would someone take a look at it please? Here is the error message: Exception occurred: File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/sphinx/environment.py", line 758, in read_doc pub.set_source(None, src_path.encode(fs_encoding)) UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xe2 in position 25: ordinal not in range(128) Just tryed it out: fs_encoding is "UTF-8" on my machine. And help is appreciated. nobody44

[aur-general] Compiling emacs lisp files

Hi, I'm currently maintaining the ninja package on the AUR [1]. Recently, there has been an issue about which I'd like to ask for your advice: ninja contains an files for emacs to support edititng the rules files of ninja. A user suggested that I compile the provided .el file to an .elc file. I did that, but then other users complained about the build-dependency on emacs. Now another user suggested that in the PKGBUILD, I should check whether emacs is installed and only then compile the .el file. I'm not totally opposed to this, but it feels a bit strange that the package is different, depending on the system it's built on. What would you do in this situation? Thanks in advance!
